Chapter 4 - The Livestream
Downstairs, Mia was speaking into her phone.
Daniel stopped halfway along the hallway when he heard her laughing.
Her voice came from the kitchen.
“I told you he wouldn’t notice,” she said. “He has so many accounts.”
Brent chuckled.
“What if he checks tonight?”
“He’ll calm down. Mom always defends me.”
Daniel remained out of sight.
Mia was livestreaming to a private social media group. Several comments appeared on the screen, encouraging her to show the new purchases.
Brent lifted Daniel’s watch toward the camera.
“Vintage,” he said proudly.
“It belongs to my dad,” Mia replied. “But he never wears it.”
Daniel activated the recording function on his own phone.
Mia continued.
“The funniest part is the grocery money. He sent eight hundred dollars, and she barely eats. Why waste it?”
Brent laughed again.
“What did you spend it on?”
Mia held up a handbag.
“This.”
Daniel stepped into the kitchen.
Mia froze.
Her livestream continued broadcasting.
Daniel raised his phone.
“You spent her grocery money on designer bags.”
Mia ended the livestream and shoved her phone into her pocket.
“You were spying on me.”
“You were broadcasting from my kitchen.”
“It was a joke.”
Daniel looked at Brent.
“Take off my watch.”
Brent glanced at Mia.
“She gave it to me.”
“It was locked in my safe.”
Mia stepped between them.
“Dad, stop acting insane.”
Daniel’s expression did not change.
“Keep talking, Mia.”
“Why?”
“The detective is listening.”
Mia’s eyes widened.
Daniel had not yet called the police, but his statement accomplished what he intended. Panic shattered her confidence.
“What detective?”
“The one who will receive the recording.”
Mia reached for his phone.
Daniel stepped back.
“No.”
“You can’t record me without permission.”
“You livestreamed the confession yourself.”
Brent moved toward the hallway.
Daniel blocked his path without touching him.
“Stay.”

Daniel called the police.
