Chapter 5 - The Man With Two Faces

Claire ran into the hallway.
“Naomi!”
The fire alarm drowned her voice.
Red emergency lights pulsed across the municipal corridor while office employees moved toward the stairs. Smoke had begun to seep from a storage room near the elevators, though Claire could not see any flames.
Detective Reed ordered officers to seal the exits.
Adrian’s interview room stood empty.
Celeste had vanished too.
The window inside Adrian’s room had been forced open, but the office was on the fourth floor. A maintenance platform ran beneath the windows, connecting the exterior ventilation units.
“They planned this,” Reed said.
Officer Marsh examined the broken latch.
“The smoke alarm was triggered from the records room.”
Claire grabbed Reed’s sleeve.
“Naomi is missing.”
The detective turned.
“When did you last see her?”
“Seconds ago.”
They searched the registration office, restroom, copy room, and stairwell landing.
No Naomi.
Claire called her phone.
It rang once, then disconnected.
She called again.
The device was turned off.
Reed requested security footage, but the camera system had failed thirty seconds before the lights went out.
Miriam remained beside the desk, protecting the evidence folders.
Claire entered Adrian’s empty interview room.
His water cup was still on the table. His jacket lay across the chair. On the floor beneath it was a torn piece of paper.
Claire picked it up.
A sequence of numbers had been written in pencil.
14-3-9-18-15-18.
“What is that?” Reed asked.
Claire stared at the sequence.
“It could be letters.”
Using numbers as alphabet positions, she translated them.
N-C-I-R-O-R.
It meant nothing.
Then she noticed the paper had been torn vertically. The missing half might contain alternating numbers.
Reed placed it in an evidence bag.
Claire searched the jacket pockets.
Empty.
But inside the lining, she felt something hard.
She found a small brass key sewn beneath the fabric.
It resembled the key her father had given her, but it was shorter and marked with a tiny bird symbol.
Celeste’s brooch had the same shape.
“Detective.”
Reed examined it.
“Do you recognize the symbol?”
“Yes. It appeared in files from the Mercer investigation.”
“What does it mean?”
“We never determined that.”
Claire remembered the red house painting in Naomi’s photograph.
“Celeste has this symbol on her jewelry. She also owns a painting that belonged to Naomi’s family.”
Reed looked at Officer Marsh.
“Send units to the Vale residence.”
Claire’s phone rang.
Naomi’s name appeared on the screen.
She answered immediately.
“Naomi?”
A man breathed on the other end.
Then Adrian spoke.
“She is safe.”
Claire’s knees nearly gave way.
“Put her on.”
“I cannot do that yet.”
“Where are you?”
“Do not involve the police.”
Claire looked at Reed. He signaled for her to keep Adrian talking.
“You took my best friend.”
“I removed her from a dangerous building.”
“You caused the emergency.”
“I prevented Reed from burying the truth.”
“What truth?”
“That he has spent twelve years protecting the wrong man.”
Reed’s expression hardened.
Claire put the call on speaker.
“Naomi believes you are her father.”
Adrian was silent for several seconds.
“She should not have seen that photograph.”
“So it is you.”
“It is more complicated.”
“Everything is complicated when you are lying.”
“Claire, listen carefully. Daniel Mercer is alive.”
She looked at Reed.
The detective shook his head, warning her not to trust him.
“You are Daniel Mercer.”
“No.”
“Your marriage certificate says otherwise.”
“The man who married Evelyn used my photograph.”
Claire frowned.
“That makes no sense.”
“It will when you open the box.”
“You wanted the box.”
“I wanted to stop Celeste from reaching it first.”
“She is your wife.”
“Yes.”
The admission came without hesitation.
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
“So you lied about everything.”
“I lied about my name and my relationship with Evelyn. I did not lie about loving you.”
“You expected to marry me while already married.”
“The marriage to Evelyn was never what you think.”
“You signed a certificate.”
“Because I had no choice.”
Claire’s anger sharpened.
“You always have a choice.”
“Not when you are nineteen and the person controlling you owns every record proving you exist.”
The statement interrupted her fury.
Reed motioned for Officer Marsh to trace the call.
Claire continued.
“Where is Naomi?”
“With me.”
“Let me hear her voice.”
A rustle followed.
Then Naomi spoke.
“Claire.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Are you being held?”
Another pause.
Adrian answered for her.
“She came willingly.”
Naomi’s voice became stronger.
“I came because he said my mother is alive.”
Claire gripped the phone.
“Your mother died five years ago.”
“That’s what I believed.”
Adrian returned to the call.
“Evelyn kept records on every identity the organization replaced. Naomi’s mother was transferred under another name.”
“What organization?”
“The one your grandfather tried to expose.”
Reed leaned toward the phone.
“Tell us where you are, and we can protect you.”
Adrian laughed quietly.
“You had twelve years, Jonas.”
“You murdered a man and placed him in your vehicle.”
“That was Daniel Mercer’s vehicle.”
“You were identified by dental records.”
“Records created by Evelyn.”
“Then give me proof.”
“I am trying to.”
Claire interrupted.
“Why take Naomi?”
“Because Evelyn will trade information about Naomi’s mother for access to the Ashford vault.”
“You said you were protecting the vault from her.”
“I am.”
“By kidnapping my friend?”
Naomi spoke again.
“He did not kidnap me.”
Claire’s voice broke.
“Then come back.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because I saw Celeste’s real face.”
Claire looked toward Reed.
“What does that mean?”
Naomi whispered something away from the phone.
Adrian told her not to say more.
Claire heard a car door close.
Then Adrian returned.
“Go to your father’s house.”
“Why?”
“In his study, behind the portrait of your mother, there is a wall safe.”
“I know. It is empty.”
“No, it isn’t.”
“I cleared it after he died.”
“You found the visible compartment.”
Claire remembered the safe. It had held insurance records and a few old passports. The back panel had seemed unusually thick.
“What is inside?”
“The reason your father chose the wedding day.”
The call disconnected.
Officer Marsh checked the tracing device.
“Signal bounced between six towers. We don’t have a location.”
Claire lowered the phone.
Reed began issuing orders.
She barely heard him.
One thought consumed her.
Adrian knew the layout of her father’s safe.
He had known details Claire herself did not know.
And he claimed her father had deliberately chosen the wedding day.
An hour later, escorted by Detective Reed and two officers, Claire entered the Ashford family home still wearing her wedding dress beneath her coat.
The house felt preserved in grief.
Her father’s study remained almost exactly as he left it. Dark bookshelves lined the walls. A large portrait of Margaret Ashford hung above the fireplace.
Claire removed the painting.
The steel safe waited behind it.
She entered the code.
The door opened.
The visible compartment was empty.
Reed tapped the rear panel.
Solid.
Claire inserted the brass key found inside Adrian’s jacket into a narrow seam beneath the lower shelf.
It fit.
A hidden panel released.

Inside lay a photograph, a cassette recorder, and a sealed envelope addressed in her father’s handwriting.
To Claire, on the day you discover who Adrian really is.
