THE DOOR CLOSED BEHIND HIM / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The Woman in the Wedding Photograph

Claire did not move until Adrian’s footsteps disappeared down the hallway.

Miriam was still searching through the directory when Claire rose from her chair.

“He knows about the sealed box.”

Miriam glanced up.

“What box?”

“My father left something in our family vault. He instructed me not to open it until I was legally married.”

Miriam stopped turning pages.

“Did Adrian know that?”

“Yes.”

“Does he have access to the vault?”

“Not without me. Or without becoming my legal spouse.”

Miriam closed the directory.

“Then you should not leave this building with him.”

Claire looked toward the locked door.

“He heard you call the archive.”

“He may already know we found the false identity.”

“Why would someone use the identity of a dead child?”

“To create a clean record.”

Miriam walked to the secondary filing room. She returned carrying a thin box covered in dust.

“Some marriage certificates from the older district system were never fully digitized. If he used multiple identities, one may appear here.”

Claire watched Miriam search alphabetized folders.

The registrar paused at the letter M.

She removed a certificate, read the names, and sat down slowly.

“What did you find?”

Miriam turned the page around.

The marriage certificate identified the groom as Daniel Elias Mercer and the bride as Evelyn Rose Mercer.

The wedding had taken place twenty-three years earlier.

Attached to the certificate was a faded photograph.

Daniel Mercer looked approximately twenty-five.

Evelyn looked nearly forty.

Claire’s first reaction was confusion. The age difference was striking, but it did not explain why Adrian called Evelyn his mother.

Then she noticed the signature beneath the photograph.

The bride’s maiden name was Evelyn Sayer.

Claire knew that name.

She had seen it printed on a legal document in her father’s private study.

“Wait.”

She took out her phone and searched photographs of her father’s archived papers. Months earlier, while organizing his estate, she had taken pictures of several folders before transferring them to the Ashford vault.

She found an image marked Sayer Acquisition Inquiry.

The document referred to a private investigator named Thomas Ashford, Claire’s grandfather.

A handwritten note appeared in the margin.

Evelyn Sayer. Missing witness. Mercer case unresolved.

Claire enlarged the image.

Below the note was a second name.

Daniel Mercer.

Miriam watched her.

“You recognize them.”

“My grandfather investigated them.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

The handle of the office door moved.

Someone attempted to enter.

Miriam placed the certificate inside the second folder and pressed a silent alarm beneath the desk.

The handle moved again.

“Claire,” Adrian called through the door. “Open it.”

Miriam signaled for silence.

“Claire, this registrar is misinterpreting old records. Celeste has contacted our attorney.”

Claire looked at Miriam.

The registrar shook her head.

Adrian knocked harder.

“You cannot trust a stranger with your family’s private information.”

Claire stood.

“You lied about your name.”

Silence.

Then Adrian answered softly.

“I changed it legally.”

“You used the identity of a dead child.”

Another silence.

When Adrian spoke again, the warmth had returned to his voice.

“Open the door and let me explain.”

“Who is Evelyn Mercer?”

Celeste’s voice came through the door.

“Claire, darling, this is becoming ridiculous.”

“Are you married to Adrian?”

The hallway went completely quiet.

Claire could hear her own breathing.

Celeste finally answered.

“Of course not.”

Miriam lifted the marriage certificate.

Claire continued.

“Then why is there a photograph of the two of you attached to a marriage record?”

The door handle stopped moving.

A few seconds later, footsteps retreated.

Miriam immediately called building security.

When she described the suspects, the officer on the phone instructed her not to leave the office. He said detectives were already on the way because the false identity had triggered a dormant fraud alert.

“Dormant?” Claire asked when Miriam ended the call.

“The name Daniel Mercer was flagged years ago.”

“By whom?”

“The notification doesn’t say.”

Claire checked her phone.

Six missed calls from Adrian.

Three from Celeste.

One from Naomi.

She called Naomi first.

Naomi answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

“Inside the registrar’s office.”

“I’m downstairs. Adrian just tried to leave through the rear entrance.”

“Did he see you?”

“I don’t think so. Celeste is arguing with someone near the elevator.”

“Do not approach them.”

“What happened?”

Claire looked at the marriage photograph.

“They aren’t mother and son.”

A long pause followed.

“What are they?”

“Husband and wife.”

Naomi swore under her breath.

Claire continued before her friend could ask more.

“Call the Ashford Holdings security director. Tell him to freeze access to the family vault.”

“Adrian has access?”

“Not officially.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means I don’t know what he has copied.”

Miriam was searching the archive alert when the office phone rang.

She answered.

Her face became tense.

“Yes. She is here.”

She listened.

“No, she has not signed anything.”

Another pause.

“I understand.”

Miriam hung up.

“Who was that?” Claire asked.

“The legal department.”

“What did they say?”

“A man using your father’s authorization code requested a certified copy of your marriage license yesterday.”

Claire’s skin went cold.

“My father has been dead for three years.”

“The request included his digital signature.”

Claire sat back down.

Adrian had worked beside her during the estate reorganization. He had handled scanners, passwords, old filing systems, and encrypted drives. She had trusted him with nearly everything except the vault itself.

Perhaps that had been enough.

Miriam pulled another document from the old file box.

“This was attached to the Mercer certificate.”

It was an application for a legal name change submitted six months after the wedding. The request had been denied because the applicants failed to appear in court.

The proposed names were Adrian Vale and Celeste Vale.

Claire stared at the page.

“They have used these names for more than twenty years.”

“Possibly.”

“Why pretend to be mother and son?”

Miriam looked toward the locked door.

“Because people question an older wife.”

Claire considered it.

An older mother and devoted son appeared respectable, even sympathetic. They could move through social circles without inviting suspicion. They could explain shared addresses, shared accounts, and constant travel.

But one detail did not fit.

“Why marry me?”

Miriam’s gaze moved to Claire’s wedding dress.

“Perhaps the better question is how many women he tried to marry before you.”

The police footsteps approached at last.

Adrian and Celeste entered the office ahead of the officers, apparently escorted back from the elevator.

Detective Reed followed them.

After confirming the identities in the folder, he asked Claire about the Ashford vault.

Claire told him what little she knew.

Reed listened without interruption.

When she finished, he opened his notebook.

“Your grandfather Thomas Ashford was not merely a private investigator,” he said. “He worked as a confidential financial examiner for federal prosecutors.”

Claire stared at him.

“My family never told me that.”

“His final case involved a network that stole dormant identities, created false marriages, and gained access to private estates.”

Claire looked toward Adrian.

His expression remained unreadable.

“Was Daniel Mercer part of that network?”

Reed nodded.

“He was believed to be one of its recruiters.”

“And Evelyn?”

“His handler.”

Celeste laughed once.

It was a brittle sound.

“You have spent too many years chasing stories, Detective.”

Reed ignored her.

Claire’s eyes remained on Adrian.

“How many women?”

No one answered.

She repeated the question.

“How many women did you marry?”

Adrian’s gaze softened.

“Claire, whatever you think happened before you, my feelings for you were real.”

Detective Reed closed his notebook.

“Four women are missing.”

Claire’s heart seemed to stop.

Adrian looked at the detective.

Reed continued.

“All four were wealthy. All four were engaged to a man using a different name.”

Claire felt the weight of the wedding dress around her.

“And you believe that man was him?”

Reed looked toward Adrian.

“We believed Daniel Mercer died twelve years ago.”

May you like

“Why?”

“Because we found his body.”
