Chapter 4 - what arthur found)

Eleven years before the locked pantry, Arthur Reeves had discovered that someone inside his company was falsifying chemical disposal records.

Arthur had built Reeves Agricultural Supply from one warehouse and a borrowed delivery truck.

By the time Daniel was twenty seven, the company operated across three states.

Arthur had taught both sons that reputation was worth more than revenue.

Daniel believed him.

Eric did not.

Eric had always admired speed.

Fast money.

Fast expansion.

Fast solutions.

At twenty, Eric began helping with warehouse logistics.

He discovered a way to move restricted compounds through secondary distributors and foreign brokers.

At first, he claimed it was temporary.

The company had purchased inventory that new regulations suddenly made difficult to sell.

Eric arranged off book transfers rather than destroy it.

Margaret found out.

She should have stopped him.

Instead, she helped.

Arthur did not discover the scheme immediately.

When he finally did, almost three million dollars had moved through false vendors.

He confronted Margaret because some transfers required trust authorization.

Margaret told him she had signed paperwork without understanding it.

Arthur did not believe her.

On the last night of his life, he went to Warehouse Four.

He carried a small audio recorder.

He also brought copies of payment records.

What happened inside the office remained hidden for eleven years.

Until Emily found the memory card.

At the hospital, the card was placed in a sealed evidence envelope.

Daniel sat beside Sophies bed while a police detective arrived.

Detective Lena Ortiz was in her early forties, calm and careful.

She spoke first with the doctor.

Then Daniel.

Then Emily.

Margaret refused to answer questions without an attorney.

Eric had left the hospital.

His phone went straight to voicemail.

Daniel gave Detective Ortiz permission to preserve the memory card.

Because the card might contain evidence related to current child endangerment, she arranged for a forensic technician to copy it.

Daniel waited.

Hours passed.

Shortly after three in the morning, Ortiz returned.

She looked different.

More serious.

Mr Reeves.

Daniel stood.

Did you open it.

Yes.

What is on it.

A great deal.

Daniel glanced toward Emily and Sophie, both asleep.

He stepped into the corridor.

Ortiz handed him headphones attached to a police laptop.

We believe this audio was recorded approximately eleven years ago.

Daniel put them on.

At first, there was static.

Then his fathers voice.

Margaret, sit down.

Daniel closed his eyes.

He had not heard that voice in eleven years.

Margaret answered.

I am not sitting down while you speak to me like an employee.

Arthur said.

You authorized the transfers.

I authorized what Eric told me was salvage disposal.

You signed twelve shell company invoices.

A younger Erics voice entered.

Dad.

Arthur shouted.

Do not Dad me. Do you understand what happens if one of those compounds reaches the wrong buyer.

Eric said.

Nobody was hurt.

Not yet.

Margaret interrupted.

Arthur, lower your voice.

Arthur continued.

I am calling the authorities in the morning.

Silence.

Then Margaret.

You will destroy this family.

Arthur.

No. Eric did that.

Daniel gripped the headphones.

The recording continued.

Eric.

You cannot do this.

Arthur.

I can, and I will.

Then movement.

A chair.

Footsteps.

Arthur suddenly said.

What are you doing.

Margaret.

Eric, stop.

A sharp sound.

Not a gunshot.

Something falling.

Heavy breathing.

Then Margaret screamed.

Arthur.

The recording became chaotic.

Eric said.

He slipped.

Margaret cried.

Call 911.

Eric.

Wait.

Margaret.

Call them.

Eric said something Daniel could barely hear.

Ortiz replayed it.

This time Daniel understood.

If they come now, they find everything.

Margaret said.

I do not care.

Eric.

You will when they arrest both of us.

There was a long silence.

Arthur could be heard breathing weakly.

Then Margaret whispered.

What do we do.

Eric answered.

We clean the office.

Daniel ripped the headphones off.

He stumbled backward until his shoulders hit the wall.

Ortiz caught his arm.

Mr Reeves.

Daniel could not speak.

His father had not simply collapsed.

He had been alive.

Alive while Margaret and Eric delayed calling for help.

How long.

Ortiz looked at him.

The audio continues for thirty four minutes before someone calls emergency services.

Daniel looked at her.

Thirty four minutes.

She nodded.

Was my father conscious.

At several points.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Ortiz continued carefully.

There is more.

He looked at her.

Near the end, before the call, your mother tells Eric to remove a storage drive from the security system.

Daniel remembered Erics warning.

Ask Mom why she changed the security system the next morning.

Ortiz said.

The card also contains copies of internal inventory ledgers. Some are old. Some are recent.

Recent.

Within the last year.

Daniel stared at her.

So it never stopped.

Apparently not.

Daniel thought about Emily.

The locked pantry.

The black residue.

Sophie clutching Bunny.

Ortiz added.

There is also a video file from six days ago.

Daniel frowned.

Six days ago.

It appears someone copied newer security footage onto the same memory card.

Who.

We do not know.

Can I see it.

Ortiz hesitated.

Then turned the laptop toward him.

The video showed a warehouse aisle.

Date stamp.

Six days earlier.

Eric entered frame with two men.

They moved unmarked containers.

Then another figure appeared.

Margaret.

Daniel felt sick.

His sixty six year old mother stood in a warehouse wearing gloves and signing a clipboard.

The footage jumped.

A different angle.

A man Daniel recognized as Martin Hale, the companys compliance manager, entered.

Martin confronted Eric.

There was no audio.

Eric pointed toward the exit.

Martin refused to leave.

Margaret moved between them.

The footage cut again.

The final clip showed Martin walking toward the parking lot.

Then a vehicle pulled up beside him.

Martin got in.

Daniel leaned closer.

Who was driving.

Ortiz froze the frame.

The windshield reflected overhead lights.

The drivers face was unclear.

But Daniel recognized the watch resting on the steering wheel.

A silver luxury watch.

The same watch Eric had worn in the hospital.

Daniel whispered.

Where is Martin now.

Ortiz did not answer immediately.

Daniel turned.

Where is he.

May you like

She said.

His wife reported him missing four days ago.
