Chapter 14 - The Name Callum Chose

The investigators argued.
The company lawyers argued.
Helena argued with Adrian.
Everyone wanted something from Owen.
The evidence in Chamber Three could convict Patricia, expose decades of corruption, and clear Adrian’s name.
It could also destroy Bellweather Holdings.
Maren listened until she could not bear another word.
“No.”
The chamber fell quiet.
Detective Vale looked at her.
“No to what?”
“No to all of you discussing my son as though he is a key.”
“The system requires Elias’s signature first,” Callum said. “Owen may not have to do anything.”
“And if it does require him?”
“We stop.”
Adrian leaned forward in his wheelchair.
“The recordings will be destroyed.”
“Then they will be destroyed.”
“They contain proof of murder.”
“They also placed a target on a five-year-old child.”
“Maren,” Elias said, “my father spent twenty-nine years imprisoned because of what is behind that door.”
“And Owen spent five years without a father because you chose secrets over him.”
Elias flinched.
She continued.
“I will not make my son responsible for repairing every terrible choice this family made before he was born.”
No one answered.
The timer continued counting down.
Forty-seven minutes.
Callum approached her.
“I agree.”
Adrian’s head lifted.
“Callum.”
“He is not opening the vault.”
“You do not understand what will be lost.”
“I understand exactly what has already been lost.”
Callum crouched before Owen.
“Do you want to leave?”
“Yes.”
“Then we leave.”
Owen looked at the screen.
“Will the bad people get away?”
Detective Vale answered carefully.
“We already have evidence against several people.”
“But not all?”
“No.”
Owen thought.
“What happens if I touch it?”
Maren’s throat tightened.
“You do not have to find out.”
“Can it hurt me?”
Callum examined the system.
“We don’t know.”
Owen looked at Adrian.
“Did you make it?”
“I designed part of it.”
“Did you make it to hurt kids?”
“No.”
“Then why is everyone scared?”
Adrian had no answer.
Owen turned to Elias.
“Are you my real dad?”
Elias knelt.
“I am your biological father.”
“Why didn’t you come before?”
“I was afraid.”
“Grown-ups are always saying being afraid doesn’t mean you can do bad things.”
“You’re right.”
“Callum came.”
Elias looked at him.
“Yes.”
“Mom says fathers stay.”
Maren closed her eyes.
Elias’s face crumpled.
“You’re right again.”
Owen took Callum’s hand.
“I want him to be my dad.”
Callum’s breath caught.
Owen looked at Maren.
“Can I choose?”
She knelt beside him.
“You can choose who you love. The legal things are for grown-ups to handle.”
“I choose him.”
Callum pulled Owen into his arms.
For several seconds, the vault, the evidence, and the timer disappeared.
There was only a man holding a child who had chosen him.
When Callum stood, his decision was visible.
“Bring me the recognition document.”
Detective Vale frowned.
“The one on the screen?”
“No. A legal adoption petition.”
Maren stared at him.
“Callum.”
“I was going to ask after the wedding.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“You already prepared it?”
“My lawyer completed the first draft last month.”
He looked at Owen.
“I wanted to become your father legally, if you wanted me.”
“I do.”
Elias stood slowly.
“If I consent, does that remove me from the vault registration?”
Adrian looked at the system.
“It may.”
“And if it does?”
“Callum becomes Owen’s legal father, but not his blood ancestor. The vault may reject the recognition.”
Elias looked at Maren.
“I will sign.”
She studied him.
“Why?”
“Because he chose.”
For the first time, Elias acted without demanding something in return.
Detective Vale contacted an emergency family court judge. The situation was extraordinary, but the existing petition, Maren’s consent, Elias’s verified identity, and Owen’s clear preference allowed a temporary legal recognition order to be issued pending a full hearing.
The judge appeared by secure video.
Questions were asked.
Documents were signed.
Maren stood beside Owen.
Elias signed the consent to terminate his parental claim.
His hand shook only once.
Callum signed the acknowledgment of responsibility.
The judge approved the temporary order.
“Owen Michael Hayes,” she said, “pending final review, Callum Jonathan Bellweather is recognized as your legal father.”
Owen looked up.
“Does my name change?”
“Only if you and your mother later request it.”
He thought seriously.
“I want both.”
The judge smiled.
“That can be discussed.”
The vault screen flickered.
Elias’s name disappeared from the recognition document.
Callum’s appeared in its place.
The system spoke.
“Legal lineage accepted.”
Everyone froze.
Adrian whispered, “That should not be possible.”
The palm scanner lit again.
But it did not request Owen.
It requested Callum.
Callum placed his hand on the brass plate.
Green light spread across the door.
The final seal opened.
Maren stared at Adrian.
“You said the vault required blood.”
“It did.”
“Then why did it accept Callum?”
May you like
Adrian looked at the screen with horror.
“Because Callum is not Jonathan’s son.”
