Chapter 13 - The Vault Beneath the Lake

The entrance to the Blackwood Vault lay beneath the house.
Police discovered it behind a steel door in the wine cellar. A tunnel descended through the cliff toward the lake, ending at a circular chamber built from black stone.
Callum was told not to enter until investigators cleared the site.
He entered anyway.
Maren followed with Owen.
She did not want him near the vault, but she wanted him even less out of her sight.
Two detectives walked ahead.
Helena and Elias remained upstairs with Adrian. Edmund had been transported to surgery.
The tunnel smelled of iron and cold water.
At the end stood a door without a handle.
Three brass plates were embedded in its surface.
The first contained a keyhole.
The second held a palm scanner.
The third contained a narrow glass lens.
Callum examined the key engraved with Owen’s initials.
“This was prepared for him.”
Detective Sarah Vale photographed the lock.
“Prepared when?”
“We don’t know.”
“Who knew his full name?”
“Maren. Me. His school. His doctor.”
“And Elias?”
Maren looked at him.
“He knew Owen’s first name. I don’t know about Michael.”
Owen touched the engraved letters.
“Evan knew.”
Maren crouched.
“What?”
“When I was little, he sent me birthday cards.”
Her blood went cold.
“You never told me.”
“I didn’t know they were from him. They said From E.”
“Where are the cards?”
“In my blue box at home.”
Callum looked at Maren.
“Patricia may have delivered them.”
“Or Edmund.”
Detective Vale held out her hand.
“Give me the key.”
Callum did.
The detective inserted it.
The first brass plate lit green.
A mechanical sound moved through the walls.
The palm scanner activated.
Owen stepped backward.
“I don’t want to touch it.”
“You won’t,” Maren said.
Detective Vale tried her own hand.
The scanner flashed red.
Callum tried next.
Red again.
The system waited.
“Turn it off,” Maren said.
A voice came from a speaker hidden above the door.
“Direct descendant confirmed by first seal.”
They all froze.
The voice was recorded.
“Secondary recognition required.”
The glass lens illuminated.
A screen appeared beside it.
On the screen was a legal document.
Recognition of Paternal Lineage.
Elias Ward was listed as Owen’s father.
Adrian Bellweather was listed as Elias’s father.
At the bottom waited an empty signature line.
Callum read it.
“The system doesn’t need Owen’s palm yet. It needs Elias to recognize him.”
Maren’s anger returned.
“Elias never signed a birth certificate.”
“He may have signed something else.”
Detective Vale called officers upstairs.
Minutes later, Elias entered the chamber.
When he saw the screen, all color left his face.
“You knew,” Maren said.
“No.”
“Patricia told me to ask why you returned this week.”
“I came because I discovered the vault required Owen.”
“Then you knew.”
“I knew his blood might open it. I did not know someone had registered his name.”
“Who could register it?”
“My father.”
Adrian’s voice sounded behind them.
He had insisted on leaving the stretcher and now sat in a wheelchair pushed by Helena.
His face was exhausted, but his eyes were clear.
“I registered Owen.”
Maren turned toward him.
“You had never met him.”
“I knew he existed.”
“How?”
“Elias told me.”
Everyone looked at Elias.
He closed his eyes.
Adrian continued.
“Five years ago, Elias found the clinic where Patricia kept me. He came to free me.”
Helena stared at her son.
“You found him five years ago?”
“I couldn’t get him out.”
“But you knew he was alive.”
“Yes.”
“And you let me keep searching.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
Helena laughed through tears.
“The men in this family use that sentence like a prayer.”
Adrian looked at Maren.
“I told Elias that Owen’s birth might be the only way to expose Patricia. I instructed him to register the child in the vault system.”
“You used my son before he was born.”
“I created protection for him.”
“You created a target.”
Adrian lowered his gaze.
“Yes.”
The honesty did not lessen her rage.
“Why?”
“Because the vault contains proof of crimes committed over thirty years. Patricia’s crimes. Victor’s. Edmund’s.”
Callum looked at him.
“My grandfather’s?”
“Edmund ordered the destruction of a ship carrying evidence of illegal weapons components.”
Edmund’s name suddenly carried a darker weight.
“Were people killed?” Callum asked.
Adrian’s silence answered.
Owen held Maren’s hand.
“Mom, can we go?”
She turned immediately.
“Yes.”
As they moved toward the tunnel, the speaker activated again.
“Final access window initiated.”
A timer appeared on the screen.
Fifty-nine minutes.
Fifty-eight seconds.

A second message followed.
Failure to complete recognition will result in permanent destruction of Chamber Three.
