Chapter 4 - NO CAKE FOR ATTENTION SEEKERS

Claire searched the refrigerator herself.

Lily’s sealed container had disappeared.

She checked the trash and found it beneath used napkins, crushed under a heavy serving tray.

The frosting was smeared across the lid.

Lily stood beside the table, watching the other children touch the decorations on the birthday cake.

Claire lifted the ruined container.

“Who did this?”

No one answered.

The caterer looked frightened.

Evelyn approached with the cake knife in her hand.

“For heaven’s sake, it is a cupcake.”

“It was the only food here Lily could safely eat.”

“There is fruit.”

“The fruit was prepared beside dairy products.”

Evelyn sighed loudly enough for the room to hear.

“Every gathering becomes a medical conference when you arrive.”

Claire looked at Marcus.

He raised his glass and took a slow drink.

“You threw it away,” Claire said.

Marcus smiled.

“You should not make accusations without proof.”

The sentence echoed his words from the morning.

Lily tugged Claire’s sleeve.

“I do not need cake.”

Claire looked down.

Her daughter had already begun protecting the adults who hurt her.

Evelyn called the children closer.

“Time for candles.”

The photographer positioned them around the cake. Relatives lifted their phones. Someone turned up the music.

Claire wanted to take Lily and leave immediately.

Adrian had instructed her to remain until he arrived.

She checked the time.

He was twelve minutes late.

Evelyn lit the candles.

The family sang while Lily stood at the edge of the group. When the song ended, Evelyn asked Marcus’s son to blow out all five candles.

“It is everyone’s birthday cake,” Lily said quietly.

Evelyn pretended not to hear.

She began cutting slices.

Claire approached.

“Lily can stand beside me while you serve the others.”

Evelyn placed herself between Lily and the cake.

“Perhaps she should learn that choices have consequences.”

Claire stared at her mother.

“What choice?”

“The choice to behave as though she is different from everyone else.”

“She is following medical instructions.”

“Children repeat whatever their parents teach them.”

Claire felt every gaze in the room.

Evelyn continued in a voice filled with false patience.

“You have taught her that food is dangerous, family is dangerous, celebration is dangerous. You reward fear because it keeps her dependent on you.”

Claire heard someone murmur agreement.

The cruelty was not new.

What was new was that Evelyn had chosen to perform it in front of Lily.

Lily’s lower lip trembled.

“I can eat it,” she whispered.

Claire immediately knelt.

“No, sweetheart.”

“I can have one bite.”

“No.”

“Then Grandma will know I love her.”

The room became very quiet.

Evelyn’s face changed for half a second.

Not guilt.

Embarrassment.

She glanced at the raised phones.

“Do not encourage this,” she told Claire.

“You told her eating unsafe food would prove she loved you?”

“It was a figure of speech.”

“She is five.”

“I was trying to stop her from becoming as dramatic as you.”

Claire rose slowly.

“Give me the cake knife.”

Evelyn tightened her grip.

“Do not order me around in my house.”

“Then keep the cake away from her.”

Evelyn pulled the cake farther across the table.

“No cake for attention seekers.”

Several relatives looked shocked.

One laughed nervously.

Marcus did not.

He was watching the front windows.

Claire understood that he knew who was coming.

She closed the suitcase she had placed beside the staircase, took Lily’s hand, and faced the family.

“She is medically unable to eat it. You humiliated a sick child.”

Evelyn continued cutting.

“Then leave. Everyone is tired of the drama.”

Claire turned toward the door.

The two knocks came.

Adrian Cole entered with Dr. Naomi Reed and a security officer.

The confrontation unfolded exactly as Claire had feared and nothing like she had imagined.

The folders were placed beside the cake.

The fraudulent invoices were announced.

The amount exceeded six hundred thousand dollars.

Marcus tried to leave.

Then Adrian received the call about the account opened before Lily’s birth.

The room erupted.

Relatives demanded explanations.

Evelyn accused Claire of staging an attack.

Marcus insisted that every transaction had been approved.

Dr. Reed raised her voice only once.

“No one leaves until the preservation orders have been served.”

The security officer closed the front door.

Adrian removed a new document from his case.

“The account discovered this morning was opened six years ago using a preliminary trust identification number assigned during Claire’s pregnancy.”

Claire stared at him.

“My pregnancy records were private.”

“Someone accessed them.”

“Who?”

“We do not know.”

Evelyn sat down.

For the first time that day, she looked old.

Marcus moved toward her.

“Mom, do not say anything.”

Claire heard him.

So did Adrian.

The attorney turned.

“Why would she need your permission to speak?”

Marcus’s eyes hardened.

“I am protecting her.”

“From whom?”

“From Claire.”

Evelyn looked at Lily.

The child stood near the suitcase, holding Rabbit over both ears.

Something in Evelyn’s expression finally broke.

She turned to Adrian.

“The money was supposed to be returned.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Claire felt the room become still again.

“What money?” she asked.

Evelyn stared at the cake.

“The first withdrawal.”

“There were dozens.”

“I only approved the first.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Mom.”

Evelyn slammed the knife onto the table.

“You said the company needed a temporary bridge. You said you would replace it before Lily’s treatment began.”

Claire looked at her brother.

“How much?”

Evelyn whispered the number.

“One hundred thousand.”

Dr. Reed placed another page on the table.

“The first transfer was not one hundred thousand dollars.”

Evelyn looked up.

May you like

“It was four hundred and eighty thousand.”

Marcus ran.
