THE DOCUMENT BESIDE THE CAKE / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - THE THIRD CALL

Three months after the birthday party, Claire stood beside Lily’s hospital bed and watched the final treatment monitor turn green.

The procedure had succeeded.

Lily was tired but smiling, her stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her chin.

Dr. Reed removed the last sensor.

“You did very well.”

“Can I have cake now?” Lily asked.

Claire laughed softly.

“Only your safe kind.”

“I know.”

A nurse brought in a small cupcake prepared under strict medical supervision. It had white frosting, one pink flower, and no candles.

Lily looked toward Claire.

“We need five.”

“For your birthday?”

“For the party Grandma ruined.”

Claire found five battery candles in the hospital gift shop.

They placed them around the cupcake.

There were no relatives, photographers, or carefully arranged balloons.

Only Claire, Lily, Dr. Reed, Adrian, and Detective Moreno.

They sang quietly.

Lily blew at the candles even though the flames were artificial.

Everyone laughed.

It was not the celebration Evelyn had planned.

It was better.

Marcus accepted a plea agreement two weeks later. He received a prison sentence, permanent restrictions from managing trusts, and an order to surrender every remaining asset connected to the fraud.

His testimony helped investigators charge three financial intermediaries and two hospital employees.

Evelyn avoided prison after proving she had authorized only the first transfer and later cooperated with prosecutors. She received probation, financial penalties, and a permanent prohibition from serving as trustee.

She sold the family mansion.

Most of the proceeds went toward restitution.

Claire did not attend the sale.

The house no longer represented anything she needed.

Dr. Vale remained missing.

Authorities traced his aircraft to a private airfield in Southeast Asia, but the passenger records had been altered. No confirmed image of him appeared after his departure.

Ethan’s scheduled deposits stopped.

The last one had been made on the same day Vale fled the United States.

For eleven weeks, Claire received nothing.

No package.

No recording.

No proof that Ethan remained alive.

Still, the investigation had given her something grief never had.

Direction.

She began preparing to follow the itinerary to Bangkok.

Adrian argued that taking Lily overseas while Vale remained free was too dangerous.

Claire agreed.

She arranged for Lily to stay with Dr. Reed’s sister, a pediatric nurse who had become one of the few adults Lily trusted.

Detective Moreno requested assistance from international authorities.

The response was slow.

The itinerary’s contact address led to a closed clinic.

The name Ethan had used belonged to a man who died twenty years earlier.

Every path seemed designed to waste time.

On the morning Claire planned to leave, Lily found her packing.

“You said no more secret suitcases.”

Claire stopped folding a shirt.

“You are right.”

“Are you going to find Daddy?”

“I am going to find out what happened to him.”

“Is that different?”

“Yes.”

Lily climbed onto the bed.

“Will you come back?”

Claire sat beside her.

“Yes.”

“You cannot promise if you do not know.”

The words sounded like Ethan.

Claire took Lily’s hands.

“Then I promise I will do everything possible to return.”

Lily considered this and nodded.

She reached into her backpack and gave Claire the gray rabbit.

“He helped you at the party.”

“You need him.”

“I have the new one.”

Claire turned the rabbit over.

The recorder had been removed, but a line of stitching remained across its back.

She hugged Lily.

At the airport, Claire carried Ethan’s letters, the photograph from Marcus’s safe, and copies of the hidden account records.

Adrian waited beside her at the gate.

“You still have time to reconsider.”

“No.”

“The police cannot guarantee protection once you arrive.”

“I spent six years accepting that Ethan was dead because everyone around me told me there was nothing else to find.”

“You are not responsible for that.”

“I know. But I am responsible for what I do now.”

Her flight began boarding.

Adrian handed her a phone with an encrypted messaging application.

“Moreno will contact you through this. Do not use your personal number.”

Claire placed it inside her bag.

The screen illuminated immediately.

An incoming call appeared.

No number.

No location.

Claire and Adrian looked at each other.

She answered.

For several seconds, there was only background noise.

An airport announcement.

Not from the terminal around her.

From somewhere else.

Then a man spoke.

“Claire?”

Her knees nearly failed.

“Ethan?”

Adrian moved closer.

The voice continued.

“You found the account.”

“Where are you?”

“I cannot tell you.”

“I am boarding a flight to Bangkok.”

“No. Do not come here.”

Claire gripped the phone.

“I saw the photograph. I heard your recording. Tell me where you are.”

“You need to take Lily and disappear.”

“Why?”

“Because Vale was never the person controlling the program.”

“Who was?”

A sound interrupted him.

A door opening.

Someone speaking in the distance.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“The two calls you made protected Lily’s trust and exposed Marcus.”

“I know.”

“But there was a third call that morning.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

“What third call?”

“Someone called the account administrator before you contacted the hospital. They knew exactly what you were going to do.”

“Who?”

“I am trying to find out.”

The boarding agent announced Claire’s flight.

Ethan spoke faster.

“Do not trust the person who gave you the hidden account records.”

Claire’s eyes moved toward Adrian.

He read the fear on her face.

“Ethan, Adrian helped me find them.”

“I am not talking about Adrian.”

“Then who?”

The line crackled.

A woman’s voice sounded behind Ethan.

Clear enough for Claire to recognize.

Dr. Naomi Reed.

Claire stopped breathing.

Ethan whispered one final sentence.

“Claire, she is standing beside me.”

The call ended.

Across the terminal, the departure screen changed.

Claire’s flight to Bangkok disappeared.

In its place appeared a message visible for only two seconds.

LILY WAS NEVER THE PATIENT.

Then every screen in the airport went black.
