Elaine Ward's attorney told police she had gone to stay with family.
Her family said they had not seen her.
Her phone was found inside her apartment.
Her car remained in the garage.
Her passport was missing.
Within hours, authorities treated her as a fugitive witness and potential co conspirator.
Rachel did not understand why Elaine would run if the evidence already existed.
Wade did.
"Because of the backup drive."
He was speaking through Detective Shaw by phone.
Rachel listened from the hospital.
"What backup drive?"
"Elaine kept copies of everything."
"Why?"
"Insurance."
"Against Pierce?"
"Against everyone."
Wade explained that Elaine distrusted Pioneer.
She had participated in the program, but she also feared becoming the only person blamed if it collapsed.
According to Wade, she kept a private archive containing emails, recordings and payment records.
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Then how does this help?"
"Because she once told Pierce that if he ever abandoned her, the full record would go to every parent."
Rachel remembered the anonymous phone call.
If you make this public, Harbor House will close. Families will lose childcare. People will lose jobs.
"Was Elaine the person who called me?"
"I don't know."
The voice had been male.
Maybe someone else at Pioneer.
Maybe one of Pierce's associates.
Detective Shaw had another theory.
Elaine's archive might show that Pioneer was not the only organization involved.
Great Lakes Renewal Materials had falsified contamination records.
A laboratory had provided clean reports from switched samples.
An outside medical consultant had reviewed symptom logs without asking whether parents had consented.
The conspiracy was larger than a single director.
Rachel's fear shifted.
She no longer worried only about justice.
She worried that important evidence would disappear with Elaine.
Tobe was discharged the next day.
Walking out of the hospital should have felt triumphant.
Instead Rachel felt nervous.
Cameras waited outside.
The story was now national news.
She covered Tobe's head with the hood of his coat and kept him close.
Reporters called her name.
"Rachel, did you know your son was part of a research program?"
"Rachel, are you suing Pioneer?"
"Rachel, how is Tobe?"
She answered only the last one.
"He's getting better."
At home, Tobe immediately asked for pancakes.
Rachel made them.
Too many.
With strawberries.
Twenty, because she had promised.
He ate three bites and declared himself full.
Rachel cried at the kitchen sink where he could not see her.
That night she checked every lock twice.
At 11:17, someone knocked on her apartment door.
Three slow knocks.
Rachel froze.
Tobe was asleep.
She looked through the peephole.
No one.
She called Detective Shaw before opening anything.
Two patrol officers arrived within minutes.
In the hallway they found a padded envelope.
No return address.
Inside was a USB drive.
And a handwritten note.
THEY WILL SAY I RAN BECAUSE I AM GUILTY.
I RAN BECAUSE PIERCE'S PEOPLE WERE LOOKING FOR THIS.
I SHOULD HAVE STOPPED IT SOONER.
GIVE THIS TO DETECTIVE SHAW.
ELAINE.
Rachel stared at the note.
Elaine Ward.
The woman who had kept sick children in the program.
The woman who had pressured Tobe to drink.
The woman who had helped hide contamination.
Now she was sending evidence.
Detective Shaw took the drive.
"What do you think is on it?" Rachel asked.
"If Elaine is telling the truth?"
"Yes."
"Enough to make several people very nervous."
