Chapter 7 - THE BROTHER WHO WASN’T A BROTHER

Mark’s DNA results arrived two days later.

He was not biologically related to Daniel.

That was expected.

He was not biologically related to Edward.

Also expected after Margaret’s confession.

He was not biologically related to Margaret.

Mark sat at Claire’s dining table reading the page repeatedly.

Jessica touched his shoulder.

“You already knew you were adopted.”

“No.”

“You knew yesterday.”

“No, I knew what she told me yesterday.”

He looked up.

“Now I know she lied to me for forty years.”

There was a difference.

Claire understood.

Daniel did too.

Mark had built his identity around being Edward Whitmore’s eldest son.

He had inherited responsibility.

Expectations.

A company.

Now he discovered that even his own birthday story had been manufactured.

Jessica opened the additional match report.

“There’s someone listed.”

Mark looked at her.

“Who?”

“A first-degree biological relative.”

Claire’s heartbeat changed.

Daniel leaned closer.

Jessica read the name.

“Rachel Whitmore.”

Silence.

Mark laughed.

“That’s impossible.”

Rachel Whitmore had died as a baby.

At least that was the family story.

Margaret kept one photograph of her in the upstairs hallway.

A tiny infant in a white dress.

Born 1990.

Died 1991.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“If Rachel was Mark’s biological relative…”

“Then either she was adopted from the same family,” Daniel said, “or she didn’t die.”

They drove to the family cemetery.

Edward’s grave stood beneath an oak tree.

Beside it was a smaller stone.

RACHEL ANN WHITMORE.

BELOVED DAUGHTER.

1990–1991.

Mark stared at it.

Then called a private investigator.

The investigator found no state death certificate matching Rachel Ann Whitmore’s exact information.

There was a burial permit.

But the permit listed the remains as those of an infant transferred from a private facility.

No attending physician.

No hospital death record.

No autopsy.

Jessica whispered, “There may not be anyone in that grave.”

Mark looked furious.

Daniel looked terrified.

Claire felt something else.

Pattern.

Daniel had been acquired through fraudulent documents.

Mark had been adopted under unclear circumstances.

Rachel might not have died.

Margaret had spent decades controlling records.

This was not one bad decision.

It was a system.

That afternoon, the threatening number contacted them again.

A video this time.

Samuel Reed sat in the same chair.

He looked exhausted but alive.

A distorted voice spoke behind the camera.

“You have been warned.”

Daniel stepped closer to the phone.

The voice continued.

“Stop investigating Rachel Whitmore.”

Mark whispered, “They know.”

The video ended with Samuel saying one sentence.

“Daniel, don’t believe the woman in the photograph.”

Then the screen went black.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Which woman?”

Daniel pulled out the photograph of Rebecca beside Margaret.

Two women standing near the car.

One biological mother.

One adoptive mother.

Samuel could have meant either.

But Claire noticed something in the corner of the photograph.

A reflection in Rebecca’s car window.

A third person.

A man.

Tall.

Wearing a dark coat.

Claire enlarged the picture.

Mark leaned closer.

His face changed.

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You know him?”

Mark stared at the blurry reflection.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Mark whispered, “Dad’s lawyer.”

Thomas Whitaker.

The same lawyer Rebecca had hired to get Daniel back.

The same firm that later represented the Whitmores.

The same man who had apparently been present the morning Rebecca died.
