Police eventually determined that the restraint around Lily’s ankle had originally belonged to a decorative birthday game.
A lightweight metal pet lead.
Nicholas, Mark’s six-year-old son, admitted that he had attached it after hearing Margaret tell Lily she could not enter the party.
“I thought Grandma wanted her to stay there.”
Mark cried when his son confessed.
Nicholas did too.
He had not understood.
Margaret had.
That distinction mattered.
Claire refused Margaret’s request to see Lily.
Daniel supported Claire.
It was one of the first decisions he made without trying to balance his wife against his mother.
Whitmore Construction’s board placed Margaret on immediate leave.
Mark stepped away voluntarily while investigators examined decades of company records.
Daniel resigned completely.
When Claire asked why, he answered, “I want to find out who I am without that building.”
Their marriage remained uncertain.
They attended counseling.
Not because Claire had forgiven him.
Because Daniel asked for the chance to become someone worth forgiving.
Claire agreed to watch.

One week after Lily’s rescue, Claire reviewed footage from Nicholas’s birthday party.
Police had collected videos from guests.
Most showed ordinary celebration.
Children playing.
Adults drinking.
Margaret smiling.
Then Claire noticed someone.
A woman in the background.
Late thirties.
Brown hair.
Catering uniform.
Claire paused.
