Chapter 2 - The Invitation

The graduation invitation arrived at the Barrett estate six weeks before the ceremony.

Linda opened it at breakfast.

She stared at the envelope.

"Richard."

Her husband looked up from his coffee.

"What?"

She handed it to him.

He read the name.

Hannah Barrett.

"She's graduating."

Allison looked up from her phone.

"Already?"

Richard nodded.

"What is she graduating in?"

Linda smiled faintly.

"Medicine."

Allison laughed.

"Seriously?"

"Apparently."

Richard leaned back.

"Interesting."

There was something strange in his voice.

Linda noticed.

"You think we should go?"

"Of course."

Allison frowned.

"Why?"

Richard looked at her.

"Because she's our daughter."

Allison rolled her eyes.

"She hasn't spoken to us properly in years."

"That's exactly why we should go."

Linda understood.

"You think she'll finally appreciate us?"

Richard smiled.

"She'll have to."

Allison's expression changed.

"Why?"

Richard took a sip of coffee.

"Because everyone needs family eventually."

He didn't say what he was really thinking.

The Barrett family had recently suffered a financial setback.

A business deal had gone wrong.

A property investment had collapsed.

And Richard had discovered that Hannah was doing very well.

Very well.

Better than well.

Her research had attracted attention.

Her fellowship had been funded by a prestigious foundation.

And according to one of Richard's contacts, Hannah was being considered for a position at a private medical institute that could eventually make her one of the youngest department directors in the region.

Richard saw opportunity.

Linda saw reconciliation.

Allison saw something else.

Competition.

For years, she had been the successful daughter.

The beautiful one.

The social one.

The daughter who appeared in family photographs.

Hannah had always been the quiet one.

The difficult one.

The forgotten one.

Allison could not stand the idea of Hannah suddenly becoming impressive.

So she made a plan.

At graduation, the family would sit in the reserved section.

They would smile.

They would applaud.

They would make sure everyone knew Hannah belonged to them.

And after the ceremony, Richard would speak to Hannah about the family business.

They would offer her a position.

Not because she needed it.

Because they needed her.

The irony escaped all of them.

The woman they had pushed away was the one person who might save them.

Two weeks before graduation, Hannah received an unexpected message from Dean Grant.

Can you meet me privately?

She agreed.

They met after sunset in his office.

Dean Grant closed the door.

"I need to tell you something."

Hannah sat down.

"What is it?"

He placed a file on the desk.

Hannah recognized the university seal.

"What is that?"

"Something your father requested."

Her expression changed.

"My father?"

Dean Grant nodded.

"Richard Barrett contacted the university."

Hannah stared at him.

"Why?"

"He wanted access to your academic records."

"Did you give them to him?"

"No."

Hannah exhaled.

"Thank you."

Dean Grant studied her.

"There is more."

"What?"

"Your father also asked about your research."

Hannah said nothing.

"He knows about the foundation."

She looked down.

"Of course he does."

Dean Grant's voice softened.

"Do you want me to prevent him from attending graduation?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

Hannah looked through the office window.

Students were walking across the courtyard.

Families were taking photographs.

Parents were carrying flowers.

For a second, she remembered being seventeen.

She remembered believing her father would someday be proud.

"No," she said.

"Let them come."

Dean Grant raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

Hannah picked up the file.

"Because they deserve to see what they walked away from."

But there was something she didn't tell him.

She had discovered something about her family too.

Something that had nothing to do with money.

May you like

Something hidden inside an old medical record.

And she wasn't ready to confront it yet.
