Chapter 15 - The Announcement They Never Expected

The auditorium doors opened.

Richard Barrett entered.

Linda was behind him.

Allison stepped in front of Hannah.

Richard stopped.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not arrogant.

Just tired.

"Hannah."

She stared at him.

"Why?"

Richard looked at Emily.

Then at Linda.

Then at Allison.

"I was trying to protect you."

Hannah shook her head.

"You destroyed my childhood."

"I know."

"You stole my mother."

"I know."

"You lied about Allison."

"I know."

"You hid Evelyn."

Richard's eyes closed.

"I know."

Hannah stepped forward.

"Then tell me why."

Richard looked at the stage.

"When your grandfather discovered the research, people wanted it."

"Who?"

"People with money."

"That isn't an answer."

"Your grandfather refused to sell."

"So?"

"Someone tried to take it."

Hannah waited.

Richard's voice became quiet.

"Your grandfather was murdered."

The room went silent.

Emily covered her mouth.

Hannah stared.

"Who killed him?"

Richard looked at Thomas Vale, who had appeared in the doorway.

Thomas smiled.

Richard pointed.

"Him."

Thomas laughed softly.

"You still blame me."

"You were there."

"So were you."

Hannah looked between them.

"What happened that night?"

Thomas stepped forward.

"Your grandfather had the research."

Richard shook his head.

"He had the cure."

Hannah's breath caught.

"The research was a treatment?"

Emily nodded.

"A treatment for a condition that had taken generations of lives."

Hannah remembered her own work.

The same condition.

The same genetic pattern.

Her research wasn't separate from her family's past.

It was the continuation of it.

Dean Grant stepped onto the stage.

He held a sealed envelope.

"Hannah."

She turned.

"This belongs to you."

He handed it over.

The seal carried the Carter family crest.

Hannah opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My granddaughter,

If you are reading this, then you have finally reached the place where your story was supposed to begin.

Do not trust the people who tell you that your past defines you.

But do not run from it either.

Your work is yours.

Your future is yours.

And the truth will belong to you when you are ready to carry it.

Hannah looked up.

Tears filled her eyes.

For the first time, she understood why her grandfather's foundation had followed her career.

He had not been controlling her future.

He had been protecting it.

Then Dean Grant spoke.

"There is one final announcement."

The auditorium doors opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Everyone turned.

Hannah stared.

The woman looked exactly like the photograph.

Same eyes.

Same birthmark.

Same face.

She stopped beneath the auditorium lights.

Emily whispered.

"Evelyn."

The woman looked confused.

"My name isn't Evelyn."

Hannah slowly approached.

"What is your name?"

The woman swallowed.

"Claire."

Hannah smiled through tears.

"Then that's what we'll call you."

Claire stared at Hannah.

"Who are you?"

Hannah looked at Allison.

Then at Emily.

Then at Richard.

Finally, she looked at Claire.

"I'm your sister."

Claire's face went pale.

Behind them, Thomas suddenly reached for his phone.

Dean Grant noticed.

"Stop."

Thomas froze.

The dean's security team entered.

Richard looked defeated.

Linda began to cry.

Allison stood beside Hannah.

And for one brief moment, it seemed as though the truth had finally won.

But Hannah noticed something on Claire's wrist.

A bracelet.

The same bracelet shown in the old photograph.

Three initials were engraved inside.

H.

A.

E.

Hannah touched it.

"Where did you get this?"

Claire looked confused.

"It was given to me when I was a baby."

"By whom?"

"I don't know."

Hannah looked at Emily.

Emily's face changed.

"What?"

Emily stepped closer.

"That bracelet was never supposed to leave the hospital."

Hannah stared at her.

"Then how did Claire get it?"

Emily didn't answer.

Claire suddenly looked frightened.

"I remember something."

Everyone went silent.

"What?"

Claire pressed a hand to her temple.

"A man."

"What man?"

She looked toward Richard.

Then Thomas.

Then Dean Grant.

"No."

Her eyes widened.

"It wasn't either of them."

Hannah's heart began pounding.

"Who was it?"

Claire whispered.

"He told me that if I ever remembered my real family, I should never come back."

Hannah stared at her.

"Did he tell you his name?"

Claire nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"What was it?"

Claire looked toward the auditorium doors.

Then she said the name.

"James Carter."

Hannah froze.

Her grandfather.

The man everyone believed had been dead for decades.

The man whose foundation had funded her education.

The man whose letter had supposedly prepared her for the truth.

Hannah looked at Emily.

Her mother was shaking.

"That's impossible."

But Claire's eyes remained fixed on Hannah.

"He isn't dead."

The auditorium doors suddenly slammed shut.

Every light went dark.

Hannah heard a man's voice from somewhere behind the stage.

"That's enough."

The lights came back on.

But James Carter was nowhere to be seen.

Only an old envelope remained on the floor.

Hannah picked it up.

Her name was written across the front.

She opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed three little girls.

Hannah.

Allison.

Claire.

And standing behind them was James Carter.

Alive.

Smiling.

The photograph was dated only six months earlier.

Hannah stared at it.

Someone had been watching them.

Someone had known where all three sisters were.

Someone had been waiting for this exact moment.

She turned the photograph over.

There was one final message.

You found the family.

Now find out who betrayed it.

Hannah looked toward the darkened stage.

For the first time, she realized the graduation ceremony had never been the ending.

May you like

It had been the beginning.

And somewhere outside the auditorium, the person who knew the rest of the story was already leaving.
