Chapter 11 - the night charles came for the girls)

Robert moved the girls immediately.

Police placed them in a secure residence outside Savannah.

Only Robert, Martin, Jennings and two federal agents knew the address.

Every bag, toy and piece of clothing was searched.

Trackers were found inside Maisie's rabbit, Emma's shoe and the backing of Grace's framed photograph.

Sophia stared at the tiny device removed from the frame.

"Mom put the key there."

Robert nodded.

"Someone must have added this later."

Ethan had stared at the frame when he came to Robert's house.

Now Robert understood why.

Perhaps Ethan knew about the tracker.

Perhaps Charles did.

Sophia suddenly said:

"Dad touched the picture at the funeral."

Robert looked at her.

"When?"

"Before everyone arrived."

The trackers might have been placed that morning.

Federal investigators questioned Ethan again.

This time he broke.

Charles had ordered him to track the girls.

Ethan claimed he thought Charles wanted to recover financial documents.

He insisted he did not believe the children were in danger.

Nobody believed his excuses anymore.

He provided three safe-house addresses Charles sometimes used.

Two were empty.

At the third, investigators found weapons, cash and false passports.

Charles was planning to disappear.

But before leaving, he wanted Grace's evidence.

And he believed the girls knew where it was.

That night, Robert sat beside Maisie's bed until she slept.

When he returned downstairs, Sophia was waiting.

"Grandpa?"

"Yes?"

"Mom said something else."

Robert sat.

"What?"

"The week before she died, she told me if a bad person ever wanted the evidence, I should give them the wrong thing."

Robert felt a slow sense of dread.

"What wrong thing?"

Sophia stood.

"Come with me."

She opened her backpack.

From beneath a lining she removed a small black notebook.

Robert stared.

"That's not the notebook we've been reading."

"No."

Sophia swallowed.

"That's the copy Mom wanted Dad to find."

Robert could not speak.

The blue notebook in his study had been incomplete.

A decoy.

Sophia held the real notebook.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Mom said only show it after the envelope was opened."

Grace had created layers of protection.

Each instruction unlocked the next.

Robert opened the real notebook.

The final twenty pages contained names absent from the copy.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Senator William Mercer.

A wealthy Georgia businessman who had quietly invested with Charles for more than a decade.

Another belonged to Judge Franklin Moss.

Another to two senior law enforcement officials.

The conspiracy was larger than anyone realized.

Sophia pointed to the final page.

Grace had written:

If Charles knows this notebook exists, he will come himself.

Robert looked at her.

"And that's why you waited."

She nodded.

"Mom said Charles never trusts other people with the thing he wants most."

Robert immediately called Jennings.

Before she answered, the security alarm sounded.

One of the federal agents shouted from outside.

A vehicle had breached the perimeter.

Robert grabbed Sophia.

"Upstairs."

Maisie woke crying.

Emma ran toward them.

Then the lights went out.

Backup power activated seconds later.

A gunshot sounded outside.

Robert moved the girls into an interior bathroom and locked the door.

"Stay here."

Sophia grabbed his arm.

"Don't go."

"I have to help."

"No."

Her voice broke.

"Mom went to confront them alone."

Robert stopped.

Sophia was terrified of losing him too.

He knelt.

"I am not your mother."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I know."

"And I'm not leaving you."

He stayed.

Outside, federal agents surrounded the property.

Another gunshot.

Then shouting.

Ten minutes later, Jennings called Robert's phone.

"We have him."

Charles Carrington had driven through the rear service gate using a stolen SUV.

He carried a handgun, cash and a passport.

He also carried photographs of the girls.

Charles was alive.

In custody.

The man Grace feared most had finally been caught.

Sophia sank against Robert.

Emma hugged Maisie.

Robert closed his eyes.

For the first time, he allowed himself to believe the danger might actually be ending.

But catching Charles did not answer the question that mattered most.

Who had physically altered Grace's medication?

Charles blamed Ethan.

Ethan blamed Charles.

Bell claimed he only supplied pills.

Vanessa denied touching anything.

And Grace's recording did not reveal who had placed the dangerous tablets inside her bottle.

The final truth was still hidden.
