Chapter 7 - Adrian Receives the Alert

Adrian was forty miles away at a coastal aviation facility when Claire’s distress signal appeared.
He had been meeting with federal transportation officials about Vale Global’s new emergency response network. Three helicopters sat fueled on the launch pad outside.
The alert reached his watch, phone and the facility’s central security system at the same time.
Claire Bennett.
Critical distress.
Marine location.
Child present.
Adrian stood so quickly that his chair struck the floor.
His security director, Mason Reed, opened the live audio channel.
The conference room filled with Ellie’s cries.
Then Margaret’s voice came through.
“Stop making this worse.”
Adrian’s face became unreadable.
“Trace the exact location.”
“It’s the Whitmore wedding yacht,” Mason said.
The live feed continued.
Claire’s voice was weaker but clear.
“You watched her push us.”
Another woman answered.
“You lunged at Daniel.”
Adrian walked toward the door.
“Launch all three aircraft.”
A federal official rose.
“Mr. Vale, is this a company emergency?”
Adrian turned.
“My fiancée and daughter have been pushed into the water.”
No one questioned him again.
Within three minutes, the helicopters were airborne.
Adrian boarded the lead aircraft with Mason and two rescue specialists. A Vale speedboat stationed at the marina was ordered to intercept.
As they flew, the security team pulled every available camera feed from the yacht and marina.
They saw Claire holding Ellie in the orange life ring.
They saw the guests watching.
They saw Daniel preventing a crew member from reaching the ladder.
They saw Lillian’s hand strike Claire’s shoulder from behind.
Mason looked away from the screen.
“We have everything.”
Adrian’s hands were clenched.
“Is Ellie conscious?”
“Yes. She’s crying and responsive.”
“And Claire?”
“Responsive. She may be exhausted.”
Adrian closed his eyes for one second.
He had spent years building systems designed to protect people during natural disasters, attacks and transportation emergencies.
Yet the two people he loved most were in danger because of a family that had taught Claire she was unworthy of protection.
Mason spoke carefully.
“The local police and harbor authorities are responding. We should arrive in seven minutes.”
Adrian looked through the helicopter window toward the marina.
“Make it five.”
On the yacht, Claire could hear something in the distance.
At first, she thought it was another boat.
Then the sound grew deeper.
The guests stopped whispering.
Daniel looked upward.
Three black shapes appeared over the coastline.
Richard gripped the railing.
Margaret’s mouth opened.
Claire rested her forehead against Ellie’s.
“He heard us,” she whispered.
Ellie shivered.
“Airplane Adrian?”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes, baby.”
The helicopters approached rapidly.
The rotor noise rolled across the marina.
Lillian stared at Claire.
“What did she say?”
Daniel looked at the Vale falcon insignia on the lead aircraft.
His face went pale.
Richard turned toward Claire’s flashing phone in Daniel’s hand.
Then he finally understood.
“No,” he whispered.
Margaret looked at him.
“What?”
May you like
Richard’s voice trembled.
“That symbol belongs to Vale Global.”
