Chapter 6 - The Push

The lower deck was decorated with hanging white flowers and long silk curtains. Beyond the railing, the marina water reflected the afternoon sun.
Claire reached the narrow boarding platform.
The tender boat had not yet returned.
A bright orange life ring hung on the wall beside her.
She took out her phone and called the marina office.
Before anyone answered, Daniel seized it from her hand.
“You’re not leaving until this is settled.”
“Give it back.”
He held the phone above her reach.
Ellie began crying again.
Claire’s entire body went still.
“Daniel, return my phone.”
Lillian came down the steps.
“Just tell us who gave you the ring.”
“This is insane.”
Margaret lowered her voice.
“Claire, we are trying to protect you. Wealthy men do not give rings like that without expecting something.”
Claire looked at her mother in disbelief.
“You think I don’t understand my own relationship?”
“I think you have a history of poor decisions.”
Richard stood behind them.
“Tell us his name.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at the phone screen.
“It’s locked.”
“Of course it’s locked.”
He turned the phone over.
“There’s a security symbol on the back.”
Claire saw recognition flicker across Richard’s face.
Adrian had given her a special encrypted phone connected to Vale Global’s emergency network. The company’s falcon insignia was stamped discreetly beneath the case.
Richard stepped forward.
“Where did you get that?”
Claire reached for it.
Daniel moved back.
“Answer him.”
A crew member appeared near the stairs.
“Sir, please return the guest’s property.”
Daniel waved him away.
“This is a family matter.”
The crew member hesitated.
Richard was one of the yacht’s hosts. Daniel was the groom. No employee wanted to challenge them publicly.
Claire pointed toward the phone.
“That device has an emergency alert system. Give it back before you trigger it.”
Daniel smirked.
“What happens? Your secret boyfriend sends a car?”
“Daniel, stop.”
He pressed the side button repeatedly.
The phone flashed red.
A silent alert transmitted Claire’s location, biometric stress reading and live audio to Vale Global security.
Daniel did not know that.
Claire did.
Her heart pounded.
“Give it back now.”
He looked at the screen.
“It says distress signal activated.”
Richard’s face changed.
“What company manages that phone?”
Claire said nothing.
Daniel raised it.
“Maybe we should ask your fiancé.”
He moved toward the edge of the deck as if threatening to throw the device into the water.
Claire took one step forward.
Lillian caught her shoulder.
“Stay away from him.”
“Let go.”
Ellie reached toward her mother, crying loudly.
In the confusion, someone moved too quickly.
Later, every witness would describe it differently.
Lillian insisted she had merely tried to stop Claire.
Daniel claimed Claire lost her balance.
Margaret said Ellie was kicking.
But the yacht’s security camera recorded the truth.
Lillian shoved Claire from behind.
Claire stumbled toward the edge while holding Ellie.
Her hip struck the railing. She twisted desperately, protecting the child with her body, and both of them fell over the low boarding gate into the marina.
The sound of the splash ended the argument.
For one second, no one moved.
Then Claire surfaced, gasping.
Ellie screamed.
Claire grabbed the life ring hanging near the platform and pulled it into the water. She pushed Ellie through the center and wrapped both arms around her.
“Hold on to me!”
The toddler coughed and sobbed but remained secured by her life vest.
A crew member rushed toward the ladder.
Daniel stopped him.
“Wait.”
Everyone stared at him.
“She needs to admit what happened to my watch.”
Claire could not believe what she was hearing.
The crew member shoved past him.
Richard blocked the ladder.
“No one is stopping a rescue,” he said, though he did not move to help.
Margaret leaned over the railing.
“Claire, stop making this worse. Give Ellie to the crew and apologize.”
Claire looked up at her mother.
Her wet hair covered her face. Her arms shook from holding the life ring against the side of the yacht.
“You watched her push us.”
Lillian stood above, pale but defiant.
“You lunged at Daniel.”
“I was reaching for my phone.”
“You lost control.”
Claire stared at her sister.
“You pushed a child into the water.”
“I pushed you away from my husband.”
Ellie cried against Claire’s shoulder.
Around them, wedding guests whispered.
Some lifted phones to record.
None climbed down.
Daniel held Claire’s phone.
The screen continued flashing red.

Then it displayed three words.
Response team dispatched.
