Chapter 15 - The House Under the Water

Blackwater Hall had disappeared beneath Lake Danton when a private dam flooded the valley forty-two years earlier.

Official maps showed only foundations and a collapsed church beneath the water. Malcolm Vale had purchased the surrounding land through a shell company shortly before his death. The cabin where Noah lived overlooked the deepest section of the lake.

Federal divers arrived under sealed orders.

They found the roof of a stone building eighty feet below the surface.

A steel access shaft rose from the rear courtyard, hidden beneath a false bed of rock. The shaft was pressurized and recently maintained.

Someone had been visiting the drowned house.

Mara led the operation from a temporary command post onshore. Eleanor, Julian, Noah, and Claire watched the divers’ camera feed.

The underwater door carried the Mercer crest.

Beside it was the Vale symbol: a black crown split down the middle.

The brass key opened the first lock.

Julian’s voice opened the second.

Noah’s fingerprint opened the third.

“No single family could enter alone,” Claire said.

Eleanor understood Thomas’s final design. Mercer and Vale. The child raised in one house and the child hidden in the other. Two lives forced apart, then required to meet.

The divers entered.

Inside Blackwater Hall, the rooms were dry.

Portraits remained on the walls. Furniture stood beneath white sheets. A dining table had been set for eight people, the plates covered in dust.

At the far end of the hall, a reel-to-reel machine waited beneath a glass case.

The first recording began automatically.

Arthur Mercer’s voice filled the command post.

“If this room has opened, then the arrangement has failed.”

Julian looked at Noah.

Arthur continued.

“The archive was created to prevent war among men whose crimes could destroy the state. Each secret balanced another. Each family held a weapon against the next. Thomas called it corruption. Malcolm called it stability. Vivian called it slavery.”

Eleanor’s hands clenched.

A second voice joined the recording.

Thomas.

“My father is lying. The archive did not prevent violence. It privatized justice and sold silence to the highest bidder.”

Then Malcolm Vale spoke.

“And Thomas is lying about his innocence.”

The recording stopped.

A drawer beneath the machine opened.

Inside were four labeled reels.

THOMAS MERCER

MALCOLM VALE

VIVIAN SHAW

ELEANOR MERCER

Eleanor stared at her own name.

“I never recorded anything.”

Mara looked at her. “Not knowingly.”

The divers placed the reels in waterproof cases.

Then one diver turned toward the far wall.

A fresh footprint marked the dust.

Someone was inside Blackwater Hall.

The camera moved through a narrow corridor and reached a study lit by a battery lamp. A cup of coffee steamed on the desk.

A figure stood behind a curtain.

“Federal agents,” Mara said through the diver’s headset. “Step into view with your hands visible.”

The curtain moved.

A man emerged.

He was elderly, thin, and walking with a cane. His white hair was neatly combed. A scar crossed his forehead.

Eleanor stopped breathing.

Julian whispered, “That’s impossible.”

Noah moved closer to the screen.

The man looked directly into the diver’s camera.

Though sixteen years had passed, Eleanor knew the angle of his shoulders, the shape of his hands, and the way he lifted his chin before speaking.

Thomas Mercer smiled.

“Hello, Ellie.”

The command post erupted.

Mara demanded identification. Divers moved forward. Julian knocked over a chair. Noah stood frozen.

Thomas raised one hand.

“Do not remove the reels,” he said. “The recording labeled Eleanor will trigger the final release.”

Eleanor’s voice failed.

“You died.”

“No,” Thomas replied through the camera. “I was removed.”

“By whom?”

He looked beyond the divers as if someone else were standing in the drowned room.

“By the person who has been guiding all of you since Easter.”

Mara ordered the divers to secure him.

The lights inside Blackwater Hall went out.

The video feed dissolved into static.

Over the speakers came the sound of rushing water and a single gunshot.

Then Thomas’s voice returned, weak and distant.

“Eleanor, do not trust the son who remembers the red door.”

The feed went black.

Julian turned toward Noah.

Noah’s face had gone pale.

Eleanor looked at him.

“What red door?”

Noah backed away from the screen.

“I never told anyone about that.”

“About what?”

His eyes moved toward the dark lake.

“The room where Malcolm taught me how to become Julian.”

Outside, alarms began to sound.

A diver surfaced without his partner.

The four reels were gone.

And beneath the water, Blackwater Hall had opened a second door that did not appear on any map.
