Chapter 12 - Midnight at Hawthorne House

They did not obey Adrian’s demand.

Not completely.

Mara concealed officers in the woods beyond Hawthorne House and placed surveillance teams along every road. Eleanor, Julian, and Noah entered the property at 11:50 p.m. carrying the brass key. No visible police followed.

The house was dark except for the kitchen.

Adrian waited beside the same marble island where Sienna had laughed on Easter. He wore a black coat and held a pistol. Vivian sat in a chair with her wrists bound, older but unmistakable.

Eleanor stopped in the doorway.

“Vivian.”

Her sister looked at her.

“I wondered how long it would take you to say my name.”

Noah entered next. Vivian’s face softened.

“Tell him,” Noah said. “Tell him who his father was.”

Adrian smiled. “Always the same question. Blood, blood, blood. The Mercers worship it until it becomes inconvenient.”

Julian stepped inside. “You used my wife.”

“I recognized an open door.”

“You framed my mother.”

“I demonstrated how easy it was to steal her voice.”

“You stole the construction reserve.”

“Consider it reimbursement. Your family ruined mine.”

Eleanor looked at Vivian. “Did he force you to come here?”

Vivian’s laugh was faint. “No one has forced me to do anything for years.”

Adrian’s smile vanished.

Vivian lifted her bound hands slightly. “These ropes are theater.”

She slipped one wrist free.

Noah stared.

Vivian stood.

Adrian turned the pistol toward her. “Sit down.”

“You still think this was your plan,” she said.

Eleanor felt the truth before she understood it.

“You contacted Sienna,” she said.

Vivian nodded.

“You placed the blue file at the gate.”

“Yes.”

“You sent the messages.”

“Some of them.”

Adrian’s hand tightened around the gun. “Enough.”

Vivian ignored him.

“I spent decades collecting what Thomas failed to destroy. Malcolm believed he controlled me. Arthur believed he owned me. Adrian believed I needed him. Men in powerful rooms always confuse secrecy with intelligence.”

“Why switch the babies?” Eleanor asked.

Vivian’s face hardened.

“Because Arthur threatened to take my child if he carried Mercer blood. Thomas tried to help me. The hospital fire gave us a chance.”

“You put Julian in my arms.”

“I placed Malcolm’s sister’s child in your arms.”

Julian stepped back.

Vivian looked at him with something like regret.

“Your biological mother died during labor. Malcolm agreed to the exchange because Arthur paid him. You were supposed to be raised safely by Thomas and Eleanor. Noah was supposed to disappear with me.”

“But he didn’t,” Noah said.

“No. Malcolm betrayed us. He took you and told me you had died.”

“Then why did you vanish?”

“To find you.”

“For twenty years?”

“To dismantle the people who hid you.”

Noah’s voice broke. “You watched me grow up with them.”

“I watched because approaching you would have exposed you.”

“You let Malcolm control me.”

“I was trying to gather proof.”

“No,” Noah said. “You were gathering power.”

The words struck her.

Adrian raised the gun toward Noah.

“You should listen to her. She built this entire crisis so the trust would open. The audit, the forged transfer, Sienna’s panic, the key, the sawmill. Vivian needed Eleanor to unlock the vault.”

Eleanor understood.

“You wanted the records.”

“I wanted the file Arthur used to control half the state.”

“Then where is it?”

Vivian looked toward the pantry.

Adrian followed her gaze.

The pantry door opened.

Sienna stepped out holding a small black drive.

Julian stared. “How did you get here?”

“Mara brought me in through the service tunnel.”

Adrian swung the pistol toward her.

The kitchen windows exploded inward as police lights flooded the room.

Mara’s voice thundered from outside. “Drop the weapon!”

Adrian grabbed Vivian and pulled her in front of him.

Sienna threw the drive toward Eleanor.

Adrian fired.

Julian moved first.

He struck Eleanor aside as the bullet crossed the kitchen and buried itself in the cabinet. Noah lunged at Adrian. The two men crashed against the island. Vivian fell. Sienna kicked the pistol beneath the stove.

Police rushed in.

Within seconds, Adrian was on the floor in handcuffs.

Noah stood over him, breathing hard.

Mara secured the black drive.

“What is on this?” she asked.

Vivian answered.

“The list of everyone who paid Arthur Mercer for silence.”

Mara looked at Eleanor. “This can bring down half the county.”

Vivian smiled sadly.

“No. That is the copy I wanted Adrian to steal.”

Eleanor’s blood ran cold.

“Where is the real list?”

May you like

Vivian looked toward Julian.

“He has been carrying it for thirty-one years.”
