Chapter 5 - The Room Behind the Laundry Wall

Dr. Samuel Reed arrived twenty eight minutes after Rocco called him.
By then, Mia had eaten half a banana, several crackers and a small bowl of soup.
Rocco wanted to give her everything in the kitchen.
Dr. Reed stopped him.
"Slowly."
Rocco stood beside the counter.
"She's hungry."
"I know."
"She says three days."
"I know."
Rocco looked toward Mia.
She sat wrapped in a blanket on the breakfast room sofa.
One bodyguard remained near the door.
Bernice, Ralph and Laine had been moved into separate rooms.
None of them had been allowed to leave.
Rocco had not called the police yet.
Gideon was on his way.
Rocco wanted facts before anyone had time to destroy them.
Dr. Reed examined Mia carefully.
There were no serious injuries.
She was dehydrated.
Weak.
Underfed.
Exhausted.
There were red marks on her wrists from oversized gloves and repeated scrubbing.
Nothing life threatening.
Everything unforgivable.
Rocco stood near the window while the doctor finished.
"What happens now?"
"She eats carefully. Fluids. Rest. And she needs to feel safe."
Rocco nodded.
Dr. Reed looked at him.
"That last part matters more than you think."
Rocco's eyes remained on Mia.
"I understand."
"No."
Dr. Reed's voice was gentle.
"You understand as a father who is angry. She needs you to understand as a child who believed you allowed this."
Rocco looked at him.
"She believed them."
"She's four."
The truth landed harder than accusation.
Rocco sat beside Mia after the examination.
She leaned against him.
"Do I have to clean tomorrow?"
"No."
"Ever?"
"Never again."
"Bernice said you wanted me to."
"I didn't."
"You promise?"
Rocco swallowed.
"I promise."
Mia searched his face.
"Did you know I didn't eat?"
"No."
"Did you know they took Benny?"
"No."
"Did you know about Mommy's picture?"
Rocco became still.
"What picture?"
Mia pointed toward the rear hallway.
"In the blue room."
Rocco looked toward one bodyguard.
"Get Gideon here."
Then he lifted Mia.
"Show me."
The blue door was locked.
Bernice claimed she did not know where the key was.
Rocco did not ask twice.
A security specialist opened it in less than a minute.
The room smelled of paper, metal and dust.
Rocco stepped inside.
Gideon arrived just as they entered.
Boxes lined the wall.
Ralph's fake company names were printed on shipping labels.
The laptop remained on the table.
So did Isabella's photograph.
Rocco picked it up.
It had originally stood in Isabella's private office.
He had believed the photograph was lost after the office renovation.
Beside it sat the metal case.
Locked.
Gideon put on gloves.
"Don't touch anything else."
Rocco gave him a look.
Gideon corrected himself.
"Please don't touch anything else."
The bodyguard found a small key taped beneath the table.
The case opened.
Money.
Cards.
Account printouts.
Copies of Rocco's electronic signature authorization.
And the brown leather ledger.
Rocco stared.
"I know this."
Gideon looked at him.
"What is it?"
"Isabella used it during the foundation's first years."
He opened the cover.
Her handwriting filled the pages.
He recognized it immediately.
For a moment, the room disappeared.
He saw Isabella at the dining table late at night, pencil behind one ear, refusing to hire another accountant because she wanted to understand where every donated dollar went.
Then Gideon pointed.
"Rocco."
Several pages near the back contained new writing.
Not Isabella's.
Numbers.
Transfers.
Vendor codes.
Dates.
One name appeared repeatedly.
RH Athletics.
Rocco looked at the hockey equipment.
"Ralph."
Gideon nodded.
"Likely."
The security specialist opened the laptop.
It required a password.
Mia tugged Rocco's sleeve.
"Daddy."
He crouched.
"What?"
"Bernice says a word."
"What word?"
"When she opens it."
"Do you remember?"
Mia thought.
"Isabella."
Rocco felt sick.
"What exactly?"
Mia squeezed Benny.
"IsabellaFour."
The technician entered it.
The laptop unlocked.
Gideon stared at the screen.
Folders appeared.
Foundation transfers.
Scanned signatures.
Household schedules.
Camera disable logs.
Then one folder carried Mia's name.
Rocco reached for the mouse.
Gideon stopped him.
"We preserve everything."
"Open it."
The technician did.
Inside were videos.
Several had been recorded from a phone.
One showed Mia crying at the dinner table while Bernice removed her plate.
Another showed Ralph ordering her to carry laundry.
Another showed Laine standing silently as Bernice told Mia that Rocco did not want to speak to her.
Rocco's breathing changed.
"Why would they record this?"
Gideon looked at the file names.
"Maybe insurance."
"Against what?"
"Against each other."
There was one more file.
An audio recording.
Three voices.
Bernice.
Ralph.
Laine.
Gideon pressed play.
Ralph spoke first.
"If this goes wrong, I'm not taking the fall alone."
Bernice answered.
"Then don't let it go wrong."
Laine's voice followed.
"And the child?"
A pause.
Then Bernice spoke.
"By the time Rocco understands what happened, we will already control the accounts."
Rocco looked at Gideon.
"How?"
Gideon continued listening.
Then the answer came.
Bernice said one sentence.
"The trust amendment only needs the guardian certification."
Rocco's face changed.
May you like
Mia had not merely been punished.
Someone had been trying to reach her inheritance.
