Chapter 4 - What Isabella Left Behind

Mia had only three clear memories of her mother.
The first was Isabella singing while brushing her hair.
The second was Isabella running barefoot through the garden during summer rain.
The third was Isabella kneeling beside her bed and saying something Mia did not fully understand until years later.
"Your father looks serious because he carries too many things in his head. But when he looks at you, all the heavy things disappear."
Mia remembered the sound of her voice more than the words.
That was why seeing Isabella's photograph inside the forbidden room stopped her completely.
Bernice was standing with her back toward the hall.
Ralph opened the metal cash case.
Laine stood beside him.
Inside were documents, cards and several stacks of money.
Mia did not understand any of it.
Then Bernice lifted a brown leather notebook.
"The original ledger stays here."
Ralph shook his head.
"We should burn it."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because without it, we don't know which accounts have already been changed."
Laine crossed her arms.
"This is getting out of control."
Bernice looked at her.
"You enjoyed the apartment in Boston."
Laine's jaw tightened.
"You said the money came from consulting."
"Did you really believe that?"
Ralph laughed.
Laine looked at him with disgust.
Bernice placed the ledger back inside the metal case.
"This family spent years treating us like furniture."
"Isabella didn't," Laine said.
Bernice's expression sharpened.
"Isabella was kind because kindness cost her nothing."
"She trusted you."
"Exactly."
Mia stepped backward.
A laundry basket moved beneath her foot.
The plastic scraped the floor.
Bernice turned.
Mia ran.
"Mia."
The child sprinted into the hallway.
Ralph reached the door first.
He caught her near the stairs.
"No."
Mia screamed.
"Let me go."
Bernice followed slowly.
"What did you see?"
"Nothing."
"What did you hear?"
"Nothing."
Bernice crouched in front of her.
"Look at me."
Mia refused.
Bernice took Benny from under her arm.
Mia gasped.
"No."
Bernice held the stuffed rabbit.
"Tell me what you heard."
"Give him back."
"What did you hear?"
Mia started crying.
"Mommy."
Bernice became still.
"What about Mommy?"
"Her picture."
Bernice looked toward Ralph.
Then back to Mia.
"Anything else?"
Mia remembered the word ledger.
She shook her head.
Bernice studied her.
Then handed Benny back.
"Good."
Mia grabbed him.
Bernice stood.
"No lunch today."
Laine stared at her.
"Mother."
"She needs to learn."
"She's already scared."
"Then the lesson is working."
Mia looked at Laine.
For one second, something like shame appeared in Laine's face.
But shame without action was useless.
Laine turned away.
Later that afternoon, Mia was ordered to clean sports equipment.
The gear had arrived from one of Ralph's fraudulent companies.
Ralph's scheme had started eighteen months earlier.
He created three vendors using different corporate names.
Each sold sports equipment to Moretti Foundation programs at inflated prices.
Most of the equipment was secondhand.
Some had been donated.
Some never existed.
Bernice used copied executive authorizations to approve invoices.
Laine helped disguise payments by labeling them as renovation and property consultation expenses.
It had started small.
Ten thousand dollars.
Then twenty.
Then eighty.
By the time Isabella's foundation accountants noticed irregularities, more than two million dollars had moved through accounts controlled by the Hales.
Bernice had one advantage.
She controlled access to Rocco's house.
And inside that house were old files Isabella had kept personally.
Including an original ledger that showed how certain foundation reserve accounts were structured.
It was information Bernice needed for one final transfer.
After that, she planned to leave.
Ralph wanted to leave sooner.
Laine wanted to stop.
But nobody wanted to confess.
Mia had become dangerous because she had seen the photograph and heard the conversations.
Bernice's solution was simple.
Keep her frightened.
Keep her isolated.
Convince her that Rocco approved.
And if she complained later, call it childish imagination.
It might have worked.
If Rocco had returned Saturday.
Instead, at 10:42 Friday morning, a black SUV passed through the front gates.
Bernice was in the laundry room.
Ralph was beside the sports rack.
Laine was watching Mia.
No one heard the vehicle.
No one heard the front door.
May you like
They only heard Mia whisper one word.
"Daddy."
