Chapter 8 - The Offer
Two weeks after the accident, Evelyn asked to meet Mara at the hospital.
Samuel attended.
So did Denise.
Evelyn wore a modest gray dress instead of athletic clothes. Claire sat beside her, staring at the floor.
Evelyn placed an envelope on the table.
Inside was a handwritten apology.
Mara read it slowly.
It spoke about stress, poor judgment, and family misunderstandings.
It did not say, “I chose a game over the safety of my grandchildren.”
It did not say, “I ignored your calls.”
It did not say, “I am sorry.”
Instead, the letter asked Mara to restore the house payments and allow Claire to keep the SUV until she found work.
Mara folded the paper.
“This isn’t an apology,” she said. “It’s a request for funding.”
Claire began to cry.
“I don’t have anywhere to go.”
“You’re twenty-nine years old.”
“I’ve never had to support myself.”
Mara looked at her sister.
“That was my mistake. I confused rescuing you with loving you.”
Evelyn leaned forward.
“What do you want from us?”
“The truth.”
“We made a mistake.”
“You made a decision.”
Evelyn’s face tightened.
“So this is revenge?”
“No. Revenge would be hurting you because you hurt me. I’m simply no longer protecting you from your own choices.”
Samuel placed a document on the table.
It outlined Mara’s conditions for any future contact.
Evelyn and Claire were not to be alone with the twins.
Visits, if Mara chose to allow them, would be supervised.
They were not to enter Mara’s home without permission.
They were not to contact her employees, clients, or friends about personal financial matters.
Evelyn read the document.
“You’re treating us like criminals.”
Mara looked toward the twins sleeping in a double stroller near the window.
“I’m treating you like people who left two babies alone.”
Claire signed first.
Evelyn resisted for several minutes.

Then she signed too.
Mara did not restore a single payment.
