Chapter 5 - The Call from the Hospital
Mara remembered the sound of a horn.
Then darkness.
When she opened her eyes, bright lights moved above her.
A paramedic asked her name.
“My babies,” she said.
Her voice barely worked.
“They’re alone.”
The paramedic told her the police had reached the apartment.
The twins were safe.
Mara held onto those words as she lost consciousness again.
Officer Grant and the firefighters had forced the door open minutes after the collision. They found Noah beside the couch and Lily near the kitchen entrance.
Both were frightened and hungry, but unharmed.
Tessa stayed with them until Denise, the social worker, arrived.
Evelyn and Claire did not return until almost two hours after leaving.
They found police vehicles outside the building.
Instead of asking about the twins, Claire’s first question was whether Mara had told anyone they had left.
Evelyn insisted they had only gone to play one quick match.
Officer Grant asked why neither woman answered Mara’s calls.
Evelyn claimed the tournament required phones to be silenced.
Security footage later showed her checking her phone twice.
She had seen Mara calling.
She simply chose not to answer.
At the hospital, Mara underwent treatment for a head injury, a broken leg, and injuries to both arms.
The doctors told her she would recover, but she would need months of physical therapy.
Her first question remained the same.
“Where are my children?”
Tessa brought Noah and Lily to the hospital after doctors confirmed it was safe.
The moment they were placed beside her, Mara began to cry.
She could not lift them properly because of her bandaged arms.
Tessa helped settle them across her lap.
“I should have known,” Mara whispered.
“You trusted your family,” Tessa replied. “That isn’t a crime.”
Mara looked at her sleeping children.
“No, but ignoring the truth almost cost me everything.”
That afternoon, Julian arrived with Mara’s laptop and work phone.
“I need you to cancel several payments,” Mara told him.
“You should rest.”
“I have rested through six years of disrespect.”
Julian sat beside the bed.
“What do you need?”
Mara gave him the list.
The house payment.
The SUV lease.
Claire’s allowance.
Club fees.
Credit cards.
Insurance policies scheduled through Mara’s company.
