Chapter 13 - The Night Thomas Came Home)

The mansion became a trap.

That was Reeves’s idea.

Daniel hated it.

Margaret hated it more.

But Thomas had crossed a line that changed the strategy.

Until then, they had been chasing him.

Now he was inviting pursuit.

Reeves believed Thomas wanted to return to Hawthorne House.

Why? Daniel asked.

Because control matters to men like him.

That is not an answer.

It is the only answer that matters.

Thomas had lost the company.

Lost Ridge 14.

Lost access to financial accounts.

Lost Vanessa’s loyalty.

Lost anonymity.

Hawthorne House remained symbolic.

The family seat.

The one place Thomas had always believed belonged to him.

Federal agents placed surveillance around the estate.

Margaret and Clara stayed elsewhere.

Daniel returned to the mansion visibly.

News crews photographed him.

The hope was simple.

Make Thomas believe Daniel was alone and vulnerable.

For two nights nothing happened.

On the third, rain began.

Daniel sat in the library reading one of Emily’s old books.

At 11:18 p.m., the security system blinked.

An old access code had been entered.

Emily’s.

Daniel stood.

The hallway remained quiet.

Agents watched from hidden positions.

The side garden door opened.

Footsteps crossed marble.

Daniel’s heart pounded.

Then Thomas Hawthorne walked into the conservatory.

Alive.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

Daniel stared at his father.

Thomas smiled.

Hello, son.

Every instinct told Daniel to move toward him.

Or away.

He did neither.

You killed Emily.

Thomas looked disappointed.

No greeting?

You killed her.

Thomas walked toward the swing.

Beautiful room.

She always did have taste.

Do not touch that.

Thomas stopped.

There he is.

Who?

My son.

Daniel’s hands tightened.

You are surrounded.

I assumed.

Then why come?

Thomas looked around.

Because running becomes tedious.

Daniel stared.

Where have you been?

Everywhere your money made possible.

My money?

Thomas laughed.

You still think in such childish categories.

The company existed before you.

It will exist after you.

No.

Thomas raised an eyebrow.

Daniel continued.

The company as you knew it is finished.

Environmental claims. Federal investigation. The board is cooperating.

Thomas smiled.

Boards cooperate until shareholders become poor.

You threatened Clara.

Thomas looked at the left swing.

The trust complicated matters.

She is a baby.

Which is why trusts are inconvenient.

Daniel stepped forward.

You will never say her name again.

Thomas studied him.

Emily improved you.

The sentence hurt more than Daniel expected.

Thomas continued.

Too late, unfortunately.

Did you force her off the road?

Thomas did not answer.

Daniel asked again.

Did you kill my wife?

Thomas walked toward the flowers.

She should have accepted my offer.

That is not an answer.

Emily had a talent for converting principle into inconvenience.

Daniel felt sick.

You hit her car.

Thomas looked at him.

The road was wet.

Daniel lunged.

Agents moved from the shadows.

Thomas did not resist.

Daniel stopped before reaching him.

Thomas smiled.

Good.

Daniel stared.

What?

You finally controlled yourself.

Agents handcuffed Thomas.

Reeves entered.

Thomas looked at him with mild amusement.

You must be the retired detective.

Reeves said nothing.

Thomas turned back to Daniel.

Ask Vanessa who was driving.

Daniel froze.

What?

Thomas smiled.

You think I drove the Mercedes.

Daniel looked at Reeves.

Thomas continued.

I was there.

Emily was there.

The car was there.

But I did not drive it from Ridge 14.

Who did?

Thomas glanced toward the security camera.

Lawyer.

Reeves shook his head.

You already spoke.

Then I am learning restraint late in life.

Thomas was taken away.

Daniel immediately called Margaret.

They got him.

She exhaled.

Alive?

Yes.

Did he confess?

Not exactly.

Daniel hesitated.

He says he was not driving.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Of course he does.

He told me to ask Vanessa.

Vanessa was brought in for questioning.

Her attorney attended.

She denied driving the Mercedes.

Then investigators confronted her with Thomas’s statement.

Vanessa cried.

Not delicately.

Not strategically.

She broke.

I was at the lake house.

Can anyone confirm?

No.

Phone records?

Thomas made me turn it off.

Did you drive the Mercedes?

No.

Did you see who did?

No.

Do you know who did?

Vanessa stared at the table.

I know who Thomas used when he needed problems solved.

Who?

A man named Peter Wren.

Investigators searched.

Peter Wren had worked security for Hawthorne Development.

He resigned two days after Emily died.

Three weeks later, he vanished.

His bank account received half a million dollars from North Pine Holdings.

The case looked clear.

Until Reeves checked death records.

Peter Wren had been found dead six months earlier in Arizona.

Natural causes.

No useful testimony.

Thomas’s defense attorney immediately argued that Wren had acted alone.

Daniel recognized the strategy.

Create a dead culprit.

Thomas had practiced disappearing behind dead people for years.

Prosecutors charged Thomas with financial crimes, conspiracy, fraud, environmental violations, and evidence tampering.

The homicide charge required more.

Margaret was furious.

He admitted Emily should have accepted his offer.

Not enough.

He threatened Clara.

Separate charge.

He was at Ridge 14.

Still not enough.

Margaret hated law at that moment.

Reeves reminded her of Emily’s recording.

Do not confuse punishment with justice.

Margaret replied.

I would like both.

Reeves almost smiled.

The trial process would take months.

Maybe years.

But Thomas was in custody.

Clara returned home.

The first afternoon back, Margaret carried her into the conservatory.

Clara pointed toward the left swing.

Daniel knelt.

Do you want to try?

Clara reached for him.

He lifted her.

Then paused.

Margaret understood.

He was remembering the day she had found Clara on the floor.

Daniel placed his daughter carefully on the swing.

Clara laughed.

Margaret pushed gently.

For a few seconds, the house sounded alive again.

Then Sofia entered.

Mrs. Hawthorne.

Margaret turned.

What is it?

Sofia held an envelope.

It came in the mail.

No return address.

Margaret opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Thomas being arrested in the conservatory.

Taken from outside the glass wall.

Someone had been watching.

May you like

On the back were five words.

Thomas was never the beginning.
