Chapter 15 - The Message Serena Left For The Man She Loved)

Domenico read Serena's letter three times.

The first time as a husband.

The second as a father.

The third as a man trying to understand evidence.

Domenico,

If you are reading this, then something happened before I could explain everything properly.

First, you need to know that I love you.

Whatever anyone tells you about our marriage, whatever Gareth says, whatever Celeste says, do not let them rewrite that for us.

I was not planning to leave you.

I was planning to leave the country for a few days because I had found something connected to your father, my mother, and Halcyon.

I didn't tell you because I was afraid you would confront Gareth before I understood who was using him.

Gareth has stolen money.

He has lied.

He has threatened me.

I do not trust him.

But Gareth is not the danger I am trying to identify.

Someone has been using accounts created by Vincent long after Vincent's death.

Someone approved transfers with authorization that should belong only to you.

Someone has access to our security records.

Someone knew where Josie and I were when even Gareth did not.

Celeste says this person is called Orion.

I don't know whether Orion is one person, a group, or simply another lie.

But I know this.

Orion knows Josie exists.

And someone believes something Vincent left behind belongs to her.

If I disappear, do not trust the first explanation.

Do not trust photographs without checking who took them.

Do not trust records simply because they have official signatures.

Most importantly, do not let anyone convince Josie that she imagined what she saw.

Children remember truth differently than adults.

They remember colors.

Sounds.

Small things.

Listen to her.

There is one more thing.

I found proof that the money in Halcyon was never the real secret.

The real secret is why Vincent created it.

The recorder in this drawer contains part of a conversation.

You will recognize one of the voices.

I pray you never have to hear it.

I love you.

I love our daughter.

If I can come home, I will tell you everything myself.

Serena.

Domenico lowered the letter.

For several minutes he could not move.

She had not been leaving.

Gareth had lied.

That pain, at least, loosened its grip.

Serena had loved him.

She had been trying to protect him.

Perhaps badly.

Perhaps dangerously.

But the marriage Gareth had tried to poison in Domenico's memory had been real.

That mattered.

It mattered more than Domenico expected.

He pressed both hands against his face.

Then he cried.

Not the numb tears that had come after the funeral.

These were different.

Grief mixed with hope was almost unbearable.

Eventually Josie entered the library.

She stopped when she saw him.

"Daddy?"

He wiped his face.

"Come here."

She climbed onto his lap.

He held her for a long time.

"Mommy loved us," he whispered.

Josie looked confused.

"I know."

Domenico laughed through the tears.

"Yeah."

She leaned against him.

"I know too."

Over the following week, the visible part of the nightmare began to close.

Gareth was formally charged with assaulting Josie.

The videos Eli had recorded supported additional investigations involving child intimidation and evidence tampering.

Financial investigators linked Gareth to millions in diverted company funds.

Conrad accepted responsibility for his role and agreed to testify.

Helena surrendered documents she had hidden for years.

The Pierce Development board removed everyone connected to Halcyon's administration.

Domenico placed Josie's trust under independent outside supervision so no executive, including himself, could secretly alter it.

Rachel took Eli back to Boston but promised the girls could see each other whenever they wanted.

Before leaving, Eli hugged Josie beside the front door.

"You call me if anything gets weird."

Josie nodded seriously.

"You too."

"I will."

Then Eli looked at Domenico.

"Don't lose Serena's phone."

"I won't."

She narrowed her eyes.

"Make copies."

He smiled.

"Already did."

"Three?"

"Four."

Eli approved.

For the first time in weeks, Josie laughed.

Gareth's downfall satisfied the newspapers.

The public story was simple enough.

Trusted family insider steals company money.

He intimidates a child connected to an inheritance.

Brave daughter records evidence.

Wealthy father exposes betrayal.

People liked clear villains.

Reality refused to remain that convenient.

Celeste had not been found.

Marissa remained overseas.

Orion remained unidentified.

And Serena's body might never have been Serena's body.

The county reopened the death investigation.

DNA samples were sent to an independent federal laboratory.

Domenico refused to tell Josie that her mother might be alive.

Not yet.

Hope could become another weapon if handled carelessly.

But the house changed.

Serena's coat finally disappeared from the back closet.

Not because Domenico wanted to erase her.

Because he no longer needed to keep grief frozen exactly where she had left it.

He placed her belongings in proper storage.

He reopened the piano.

He and Josie ate breakfast outside.

They went swimming.

The first time Josie approached the pool after Gareth's arrest, she stopped at the edge.

Domenico waited.

"You don't have to."

"I want to."

She held his hand.

Together they entered the water.

Nothing happened.

No scream.

No danger.

Just sunlight.

A father.

A daughter.

And for twenty minutes, a normal summer afternoon.

That evening, Domenico finally listened to Serena's recorder.

Marcus sat beside him.

The first files contained meetings with accountants.

Gareth's voice.

Conrad's voice.

Serena questioning transfers.

The final recording was different.

Date unknown.

Serena sounded frightened.

"You had no right to follow me."

A man's voice answered.

Domenico froze.

He knew it.

He simply could not place it immediately.

Serena continued.

"Vincent trusted you."

The man laughed.

"Vincent trusted everyone who made him money."

"You created Orion."

"No. Vincent created Orion. I kept it alive."

"Why?"

"Because families like yours survive only when someone does what respectable people pretend they would never do."

"You used Gareth."

"Gareth used himself."

"You used Celeste."

"Celeste wanted money."

"You threatened Josie."

The man's tone changed.

"I warned you."

"Stay away from my daughter."

"You still don't understand what she owns."

"She owns shares."

"Not those shares."

Silence followed.

Serena whispered, "What are you talking about?"

The man answered.

"Ask Domenico why Vincent changed the beneficiary six days before he died."

The recording ended.

Domenico sat perfectly still.

Marcus looked at him.

"Do you recognize the voice?"

"I think I do."

"Who?"

Domenico stood.

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He stared at it.

Marcus said, "Don't answer."

Domenico did.

No one spoke.

Then he heard breathing.

A woman's voice whispered, "Domenico?"

His entire body went cold.

The phone almost slipped from his hand.

He knew that voice.

Not because of recordings.

Not because of old videos.

Because it had once whispered beside him every night.

"Serena?"

Silence.

Then the woman began crying.

Domenico stopped breathing.

"Serena, where are you?"

A sound interrupted her.

A door.

Footsteps.

She whispered rapidly.

"Don't trust the DNA result."

"What?"

"Listen to me. Do not trust the result they send you."

"Where are you?"

"Orion knows you're looking."

"Serena."

"Protect Josie."

"I am protecting her."

"No."

Her voice broke.

"Protect her from Pierce Development."

The line went dead.

Domenico stared at the phone.

Marcus immediately began tracing the call.

Josie appeared in the library doorway.

She was wearing pajamas and holding Serena's blue scarf.

"Daddy?"

Domenico looked at her.

She smiled sleepily.

"Was that Mommy?"

Before he could answer, Marcus's computer chimed.

The trace had returned a location.

Marcus stared at the screen.

His face changed.

"What?"

Marcus slowly turned the laptop toward him.

The call had not come from Portugal.

It had not come from Switzerland.

It had not even come from outside Connecticut.

The signal originated less than twelve miles from Villa Aurelia.

From a property owned by Pierce Development.

A property that had supposedly been abandoned for fifteen years.

Domenico looked at Josie.

Then at Serena's letter.

Then at the old black phone containing all the photographs his wife had left behind.

Outside, beyond the garden, a single red light appeared in the darkness near the distant tree line.

Josie saw it first.

Her smile vanished.

"Daddy."

Domenico moved toward the window.

The light flashed once.

Twice.

Then three times.

Exactly the way Josie had described the light from the night Serena disappeared.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

Domenico's phone vibrated.

A photograph arrived.

It had been taken only seconds earlier.

The image showed Domenico standing at the library window.

Josie stood behind him.

Someone was watching the house.

Beneath the photograph was one sentence.

GARETH WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

Domenico slowly looked into the darkness beyond the glass.

This time he did not feel grief.

He did not feel confusion.

He felt certainty.

Whoever had destroyed Serena's life had spent eighteen months believing Domenico Pierce was a grieving husband too broken to see what was happening around him.

They had frightened his daughter.

Manipulated his family.

Corrupted his company.

Buried evidence.

And possibly hidden his wife.

That mistake was over.

Domenico took Josie's hand.

"Stay with Marcus."

"Where are you going?"

He looked once more at the red light.

"To find out who's been watching us."

The light disappeared.

Somewhere beyond the walls of Villa Aurelia, an engine started.

And twelve miles away, inside an abandoned Pierce Development property that officially contained nothing but empty rooms, a woman opened her eyes when she heard the same engine approaching.

On the table in front of her sat a photograph of six year old Josie.

Beside the photograph was a Pierce family trust document.

One name had been circled in red ink.

Not Gareth.

Not Helena.

Not Celeste.

Domenico Pierce.

Behind the woman, a door slowly opened.

A man entered.

She looked up at him.

"You shouldn't have called him."

The woman said nothing.

The man placed another photograph on the table.

This one had been taken years earlier.

Vincent Pierce stood beside Serena's mother.

Between them was a child.

A child Domenico had never known existed.

The man leaned closer.

"Now he will find out why his father built Orion."

Outside the abandoned building, headlights appeared through the trees.

And back at Villa Aurelia, Domenico had no idea that the answer he had spent eighteen months searching for was about to expose a secret far older than Serena's disappearance.

A secret that did not begin with Gareth.

May you like

A secret that did not begin with Halcyon.

And a secret that someone was still willing to kill to keep inside the Pierce family.
