Chapter 14 - What Happened at Zero

The device had never contained explosives.
It was an inert demonstration unit Sarah had once purchased from a security technology company.
The wires were sealed.
The housing was harmless.
The digital timer worked.
That was all Ethan needed.
Claire had connected the countdown to a scheduled legal release.
Not electronically through the device itself.
The timer was only a visible marker.
When it reached zero, Claire would execute a prearranged set of authorized disclosures.
The full Northbridge record.
The forged corporate structures.
The guardianship documents.
Sarah’s audio.
Martin’s statement.
Richard’s false police timeline.
Everything already preserved by attorneys and investigators would be released simultaneously to the relevant authorities, oversight bodies and independent board members.
Richard stared at the timer.
2:31.
“You’re bluffing.”
Ethan said nothing.
“You wouldn’t.”
2:18.
Richard looked at Lily.
For the first time, something resembling regret crossed his face.
Not for hurting her.
For losing control afterward.
“Ethan.”
His voice softened.
“I’m angry.”
Ethan stared.
“You know how I get.”
“No.”
“Families fight.”
“You kicked a baby.”
“She crawled into me.”
“You keep saying that.”
Richard took a step closer.
Ethan raised his phone.
Claire spoke.
“Stay where you are, Mr. Morgan.”
Richard stopped.
“You’ve poisoned my son against me.”
Claire answered, “You did not require assistance.”
Richard ignored her.
He crouched several feet from Ethan.
“You want an apology?”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
Richard forced the words.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
Richard hesitated.
Ethan asked again.
“For what?”
“I moved my leg.”
“No.”
“I frightened Lily.”
“No.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“You want me to confess to something?”
“I want to see whether you know what you did.”
Silence.
The timer reached 1:36.
Richard looked toward the front window.
The black sedan had arrived.
Then another.
Claire said, “They’re early.”
Richard stood.
“Who?”
Ethan did not answer.
The doorbell rang.
Richard stared at it.
“No.”
Ethan looked at his father.
“Yes.”
Richard backed away from the door.
“You called police.”
“Investigators.”
“You said the timer.”
“The timer is for everyone else.”
Richard’s eyes widened.
The doorbell rang again.
Claire spoke.
“Ethan, you can open the door.”
Ethan looked down at Lily.
He could not stand.
He almost laughed at the absurdity.
Richard was the only adult beside the door.
Ethan said, “Open it.”
Richard stared at him.
“No.”
“Then I’ll crawl there.”
The humiliation of the statement seemed to affect Richard more than anything else.
For his entire life, Richard had taught Ethan that physical dependence meant weakness.
Yet Ethan was willing to drag himself across a floor in front of strangers rather than obey him.
Richard looked at his son.
Really looked.
Then he opened the door.
Two investigators stood outside.
An attorney from the state financial crimes unit was with them.
Behind them was Martin Vale.
Richard froze.
Martin looked older than he had three days earlier.
But he did not look afraid.
Richard whispered, “You.”
Martin answered, “Me.”
One investigator stepped forward.
“Richard Morgan?”
Richard’s hand tightened around the door.
The timer reached 0:47.
“You have a warrant authorizing seizure of specified financial records and electronic devices connected to the Northbridge investigation.”
Richard looked at Ethan.
“This is what you wanted?”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Don’t lie.”
“I wanted my wife alive.”
The room went silent.
Richard’s face changed.
Ethan continued.
“I wanted to watch Sarah complain because I loaded the dishwasher wrong.”
His voice broke.
“I wanted her to see Lily walk.”
Lily whimpered softly.
“I wanted Noah to know her voice from somewhere other than recordings.”
Richard said nothing.
“I wanted my father to be a grandfather.”
Ethan wiped his eyes.
“I wanted a hundred things.”
The timer reached 0:20.
“But none of those are available.”
Richard’s shoulders slowly dropped.
“What happens at zero?”
Ethan looked at the device.
0:14.
“Everyone sees you.”
Richard’s face went pale.
0:10.
Claire’s voice came from the phone.
“Ethan, last chance to suspend.”
Richard looked at him.
Something desperate appeared in his eyes.
Not love.
Survival.
“Son.”
Ethan stared.
Richard had rarely called him that.
“Please.”
Ethan looked down at Lily.
Then at Noah.
Then toward Sarah’s photograph on the shelf.
5.
6.
7.
Richard whispered, “Ethan.”
2.
Ethan answered.
“No more.”
1.
2.
Claire said, “Released.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Nothing exploded.
No fire.
No destruction.
Only silence.
Then phones began vibrating.
Richard’s first.
Then the investigator’s.
Then Claire’s voice came through the speaker.
“It’s done.”
Richard stared at the harmless device.
“You tricked me.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
His voice became cold.
“I gave you five minutes to understand what powerlessness feels like.”
Richard looked at him.
Ethan continued.
“Sarah got eleven.”
Martin lowered his eyes.
Richard said nothing.
That sentence finally broke through.
Eleven minutes.
The time Richard had taken.
The time he could never return.
Investigators asked Richard to step outside.
He looked at Ethan one last time.
“You’ll regret destroying your own father.”
Ethan held Lily closer.
“No.”
He looked toward Noah.
“I’ll regret waiting this long to protect my children from him.”
Richard left the house.
The front door closed.
For several seconds there was no sound except the twins crying.

Then Ethan turned off the timer.
The screen went black.
