Chapter 13 - The Morning Richard Came Back

Richard’s car was found at the airport.
He never boarded a flight.
His passport remained unused.
For three days, nobody knew where he was.
Police checked properties.
Friends.
Hotels.
Private clubs.
Ethan knew where Richard would eventually go.
Home.
Not Richard’s home.
Ethan’s.
Because Richard had never accepted that the house belonged to his son.
He still knew the old alarm code.
It no longer worked.
He still had an old key.
It no longer fit.
So on the fourth morning, Richard rang the doorbell.
Ethan saw him through the camera.
Gray athletic shirt.
Black track pants.
Sports bag.
Pickleball paddle.
Exactly as if the last three weeks had never happened.
Ethan opened the door only after confirming the safety system was active.
“What are you doing here?”
Richard lifted the sports bag.
“I brought clothes.”
“You’re not staying.”
“We need to talk.”
“No.”
Richard looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Defeated.
But Ethan knew better than to mistake defeat for harmlessness.
“You destroyed the family company.”
“No. I stopped you from using it.”
“You handed it to strangers.”
“I handed operations to professionals.”
“You humiliated me.”
“You did that yourself.”
Richard’s mouth tightened.
Then Lily crawled toward the doorway.
Ethan turned.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
Richard looked down.
Something ugly crossed his face.
Not hatred of Lily herself.
Resentment.
At everything she represented.
Sarah.
The trust.
The future Ethan chose over him.
Richard stepped inside without permission.
Ethan blocked him with the wheelchair.
“Leave.”
“I am your father.”
“You are trespassing.”
“Don’t be ridiculous.”
Noah began crying near the playpen.
Richard’s irritation increased.
“This is exactly what I’m talking about.”
“What?”
“This chaos.”
“They’re babies.”
“You live like this all day?”
“Yes.”
Richard shook his head.
“You gave up a multibillion-dollar company for diapers.”
Ethan smiled.
“That sentence explains why you lost everything.”
Richard dropped the sports bag.
“You think Sarah was better than me?”
“Yes.”
The immediate answer stunned him.
Ethan continued.
“She was kinder than you. Braver than you. Smarter about people than you ever were.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“She stole my company.”
“She protected ours.”
“She manipulated you from the grave.”
“No.”
Ethan stared at him.
“She gave me a choice.”
Richard leaned closer.
“And you chose weakness.”
Lily crawled toward Richard’s sneaker.
Ethan saw it happen.
Richard saw it too.
He could have stepped back.
He could have moved away.
Instead, irritation flashed across his face.
He jerked his leg.
Fast.
Forceful.
Lily tumbled across the soft carpet.
Her head bumped the low padded edge of the coffee table.
She burst into tears.
The room changed.
Ethan’s face went white.
“Lily.”
Richard snapped, “Get that little girl away from me.”
Ethan forgot the wheelchair.
Forgot the brace.
Forgot pain.
He pushed himself up.
His injured leg immediately failed.
He hit the carpet.
But he kept moving.
He dragged himself toward Lily.
She reached for him.
Ethan pulled her into his arms.
No serious injury was visible.
Only frightened tears and a reddened spot near her forehead.
“That’s your granddaughter!”
Richard rolled his eyes.
“Not my problem.”
Noah started crying.
Richard picked up his sports bag.
He turned toward the front door.
And something inside Ethan became perfectly calm.
For weeks, he had fought Richard through lawyers.
Documents.
Audits.
Evidence.
He had tried to understand him.
Tried to understand Sarah.
Tried to understand the accident.
Now there was nothing left to understand.
Ethan reached under the sofa.
The black case was there.
Claire had told him to turn it over as evidence.
Investigators had photographed it and returned it because it was harmless.
Ethan pulled it toward him.
He had changed its purpose the night before.
Not the mechanism.
Not the appearance.
Only what the timer represented.
He pressed the activation button.
Five minutes.
Richard stopped at the door when he heard the beep.
Ethan called Claire.
She answered instantly.
“Yes?”
“End everything with him.”
Silence.
Then Claire understood.
“You’re certain?”
“Everything. Today.”
Richard slowly turned.
Ethan stared at him.
“Everything.”
Richard looked at the black case.
The timer counted down.
His face changed.
“What did you do?”
Ethan pulled Lily closer.
“It’s over.”
Richard dropped the paddle.
The sound cracked across the room.
The scene Sarah warned Ethan about had finally arrived.
Richard standing near the door.
Ethan on the floor.
His children crying.
One man physically powerful.
The other unable to stand.
And yet Richard was the one losing control.
Because the timer was not counting down to an explosion.
May you like
It was counting down to something Richard feared more.
Disclosure.
