THE DAUGHTER THEY THREW AWAY / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - THE FALL OF CHARLES DONOVAN

Charles Donovan stood in the ballroom surrounded by police officers, donors, reporters, and frightened guests.

His hands were restrained in front of him, but he did not look defeated.

He looked prepared.

Vivian stood beside the stage while the false federal agent held a concealed gun against her back.

The county prosecutor spoke with two detectives near the entrance. She did not appear to realize several members of her team had been replaced.

Charles saw Ella enter.

Relief flashed across his face.

She walked through the crowd carrying a blue book.

Rourke moved somewhere behind the walls.

Sophie remained hidden in the library passage.

Mark had been left in the boathouse with Adrian, who arrived seconds after Rourke left.

Ella trusted none of them completely.

She no longer needed to.

The guests parted as she approached the stage.

Charles looked at the book.

“You found it.”

“I did.”

“Give it to the prosecutor.”

The prosecutor extended her hand.

Ella stopped.

“No.”

Whispers spread through the room.

Charles maintained his public smile.

“Ella, this is evidence.”

“It is also a copy.”

His smile faded.

“The original is safe.”

The false agent pressed the gun harder against Vivian.

Ella saw her mother’s small reaction.

Charles spoke quietly.

“Do not make this worse.”

“For whom?”

“For everyone.”

Ella turned toward the crowd.

“For seven years, my family told you my brother Daniel died because he was reckless. They said he drove drunk. They said he was unstable.”

Charles stepped forward.

“Ella is emotionally distressed.”

She opened the blue book.

“This ledger contains records of payments made by Donovan Development to judges, police officers, inspectors, politicians, and medical administrators.”

Several guests moved toward the exits.

Uniformed officers blocked the doors.

Ella continued.

“It contains information about Paul Mercer, a building inspector who disappeared after discovering unsafe materials in a public housing project.”

Judge Vale shouted, “This is absurd.”

Ella looked at him.

“Page forty-three records the payment that purchased your lake house.”

The judge went silent.

She turned another page.

“Page sixty-one lists funds transferred to Commissioner Holt two days after evidence disappeared from Daniel’s vehicle.”

The police commissioner stepped backward.

Camera flashes erupted.

Charles’s voice sharpened.

“Enough.”

Ella looked at him.

“No. You have controlled the ending of every story in this house. Not tonight.”

She removed Daniel’s phone.

The ballroom speakers activated.

Adrian had connected the device to the sound system from the security room.

Daniel’s final video appeared on the large screen behind the stage.

“If Ella sees this,” he said, “then I didn’t make it.”

Vivian covered her mouth.

Guests watched in silence.

Headlights appeared behind Daniel’s car.

The vehicle struck him.

The video ended.

Charles spoke over the shocked whispers.

“A tragic recording proves nothing.”

Ella played the recovered office video.

Charles’s voice filled the ballroom.

“The Mercer inspector has become a problem.”

The recording continued through the discussion with Mark, Rourke, and Evelyn.

When Evelyn recommended moving Mercer through Blackthorn, the hospital board members in the audience stared at her in horror.

Evelyn stepped forward from the crowd.

“I will testify,” she said.

Charles turned toward her.

“You will do no such thing.”

“I falsified Daniel’s autopsy under threat from Charles Donovan.”

The room erupted.

The false federal agent moved his gun.

Before he could fire, Rourke emerged from behind the stage and struck him.

The weapon slid across the floor.

Vivian ran toward Ella.

Officers tackled both men.

This time, the county prosecutor saw the false identification card on the agent’s jacket.

“Secure every officer,” she ordered. “Verify credentials now.”

Charles’s control finally cracked.

“You stupid woman!” he shouted at Vivian. “Do you understand what you’ve done?”

Vivian stood beside Ella.

“Yes.”

“You’ll lose everything.”

“I lost everything seven years ago.”

Charles turned toward Ella.

His voice lowered.

“You think this makes you powerful?”

“No.”

“You think these people care about Daniel?”

“No.”

“You think the truth protects you?”

“No.”

He looked almost confused.

Ella closed the ledger.

“But now everyone knows where to look.”

Officers approached Charles.

Mark entered the ballroom on a stretcher, guarded by Adrian and two verified federal agents.

When Charles saw his wounded son, he did not ask whether Mark was alive.

He asked, “Did he talk?”

Mark heard him.

Something broke in his expression.

All his life, he had believed he was the chosen son.

In that moment, he understood he had always been disposable.

“Yes,” Mark said loudly. “I talked.”

Charles stared at him.

Mark continued.

“Dad ordered Rourke to follow Daniel. Dad supplied the poison. Dad paid Commissioner Holt to remove the evidence.”

Charles lunged toward the stretcher.

Officers restrained him.

“Liar!”

Mark laughed bitterly.

“That’s what loudmouths deserve, right?”

Reporters shouted questions.

The police commissioner attempted to leave and was arrested at the door.

Judge Vale demanded legal counsel.

Senator Bell fainted near the stage.

The ballroom collapsed into panic.

Charles struggled against the officers.

Then he saw the cameras.

His expression changed instantly.

He became calm again.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he announced, “you are witnessing a conspiracy against my family.”

Ella walked toward him.

“It isn’t your family anymore.”

His eyes moved to Vivian.

Then to Mark.

Finally, to Ella.

“You were never my daughter.”

The words spread through the room.

Vivian took Ella’s hand.

“She is mine.”

Charles smiled cruelly.

“Tell her the rest.”

Vivian’s grip tightened.

Ella looked at her.

“What rest?”

Charles leaned closer as the officers pulled him away.

“Ask your mother why Daniel called you E-17.”

Ella stopped breathing.

Daniel had known her project designation.

Charles smiled.

Then the police dragged him through the crowd.

Outside, officers forced him toward a waiting vehicle.

That was when Ella’s father twisted free, seized her by the hair, and struck her across the face before hundreds of witnesses.

The moment happened exactly as he wanted it to happen.

A final display of dominance.

A final attempt to remind her that he controlled the family.

He dragged her across the driveway.

Mark, watching from the stretcher, clapped slowly and mocked her because cruelty was the only armor he had left.

Charles shoved Ella onto the concrete and declared her dead to the family.

Ella wiped the blood from her lip.

Then she smiled.

Police headlights flooded the gate.

The prosecutor stepped forward.

“Charles Donovan? Mark Donovan? Nobody moves.”

Mark’s smile disappeared.

Charles looked at Ella.

“What did you do?”

“I finally stopped protecting you.”

The charges were announced.

Fraud.

Witness intimidation.

Money laundering.

Conspiracy.

Obstruction.

Murder.

Then every light in the mansion went out.

A scream came from the second floor.

Officers rushed inside.

The figure Ella had seen behind the curtain was gone.

In the dark bedroom, they found only an open window and a message written across the mirror.

CHARLES DONOVAN WAS NEVER IN CONTROL.
