Chapter 11 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE WALL

The hidden room smelled of dust and cedar.
Ella entered with the light from her phone.
The bookshelf closed behind her, blocking the chaos from the mansion.
Shelves lined the narrow walls.
Most were empty.
At the center stood a wooden desk beneath a single hanging bulb.
Someone had been there recently.
Dust covered the floor except for several fresh footprints.
On the desk lay a blue leather ledger.
Ella approached slowly.
The book was thicker than she imagined, secured with a metal clasp.
Daniel’s key opened it.
Inside were handwritten records spanning more than twenty years.
Payments to officials.
Property transfers.
Blackmail agreements.
Medical shipments.
Names of witnesses who had vanished.
Each page carried initials, dates, and coded descriptions.
Some entries were in Charles’s handwriting.
Others belonged to someone else.
Ella photographed the first pages.
Then she reached a section labeled PROJECT HEIR.
The records began thirty-one years earlier.
Clinic acquisition.
Subject selection.
Maternal transfer approved.
Infant placement confirmed.
C. Donovan notified of substitution.
Ella’s hands trembled.
A photograph had been attached to the page.
It showed Vivian asleep in a hospital bed.
Beside her stood Evelyn Grant holding a newborn.
On the back someone had written:
Subject E-17 successfully transferred to Donovan household.
Ella turned the page.
A second photograph showed three babies inside the clinic nursery.
One had a small rose-shaped birthmark near the shoulder.
Ella had the same mark.
A handwritten note appeared beneath the image.
Biological origin classified.
Father: REDACTED.
Mother: Patient 6A.
Ella struggled to breathe.
She was not Vivian’s biological child.
Perhaps she was not legally adopted either.
She had been placed.
Substituted.
A sound came from behind the shelves.
Ella turned.
A woman stepped from a narrow doorway.
Sophie.
She looked older than the photograph, thinner and exhausted, but alive.
Ella could not speak.
Sophie pressed one finger to her lips.
“They’re listening.”
Ella crossed the room and embraced her.
Sophie remained stiff for a second, then clung to her.
“I thought you were tied in the boathouse.”
“A recording.”
“Who brought you here?”
“Your mother.”
Ella pulled back.
“Vivian knew you were alive?”
“She helped hide me after Daniel died.”
“For seven years?”
“It wasn’t safe to return.”
“You could have contacted me.”
“I tried twice. Rourke intercepted both messages.”
“Why send the invitation now?”
“I didn’t.”
Ella stared at her.
“Then who did?”
“I don’t know.”
Sophie moved toward the ledger.
“We need to leave. Charles knows the room is open.”
“How?”
“The key triggers an old electrical circuit in his office.”
Ella gathered the book.
Sophie stopped her.
“You can’t take it through the mansion.”
“Why?”
“Every exit is being watched.”
“I’ll give it to the agents.”
“Some of them work for Charles.”
“Which ones?”
“I don’t know.”
Footsteps sounded behind the bookshelf.
Sophie opened the narrow doorway.
“Follow me.”
The passage led downward.
They moved through darkness until they reached a stone staircase beneath the house.
Sophie spoke quickly.
“After the crash, Evelyn pulled Daniel from the car. She tried to save him.”
“Adrian said she injected him.”
“With an antidote.”
“It failed.”
“Because Daniel had received too much poison.”
“Who poisoned him?”
Sophie looked back.
“Vivian.”
Ella stopped.
“No.”
“Daniel told me before he died.”
“Why would my mother poison her own son?”
“She didn’t know it was poison. Charles gave her medication and told her Daniel was having panic attacks.”
Ella remembered Vivian’s guilt.
The silence.
The fear.
“She gave him pills.”
“For three days.”
“Then Charles used her.”
“He used everyone.”
They reached a tunnel leading toward the lake.
Sophie continued.
“Daniel discovered Project Heir. That is why he died.”
“What is it?”
“I only know it began at Evelyn’s clinic. Children were placed into powerful families.”
“For what purpose?”
“To control bloodlines, inheritances, political alliances. Charles was not the creator. He was one participant.”
Ella looked at the ledger.
“Who created it?”
“Your biological father.”
A distant explosion shook the tunnel.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
The lights went out.
Sophie grabbed Ella’s hand.
“They’re sealing the passage.”
Behind them, someone entered the staircase.
A flashlight beam appeared.
A voice echoed through the tunnel.
“Ella.”
It was Adrian.
Sophie pulled her deeper into the darkness.
“Don’t answer him.”
“He may be helping.”
“Daniel warned you about him.”
Adrian called again.
“Ella, the police are arresting Charles. I need to get you out.”
Sophie whispered, “His father designed these tunnels.”
The flashlight moved closer.
Ella held the ledger against her chest.
“Adrian,” she called.
The light stopped.
“Are you alone?”
“Yes.”
Sophie shook her head.
Ella listened.

Another set of footsteps moved behind him.
Adrian was not alone.
