Chapter 15 - THE HEARTBEAT UNDER THE LAKE

The Bellwether house had been designed to destroy itself.
Gas flooded the basement vents while the countdown continued.
Police carried Daniel upstairs.
Claire held Rose’s hand as Dr. Patel guided them through smoke toward the damaged gate.
Amelia refused to leave without entering a code into the control system.
“You have thirty seconds,” Ortiz shouted.
“If I don’t stop the purge, every record beneath the lake will be destroyed.”
“Leave them.”
“You don’t understand what is stored there.”
Claire grabbed her mother’s arm.
“No more secrets. Come with us.”
Amelia stared at her.
For one second, Claire saw the mother she remembered.
Then Amelia entered the final code.
The countdown stopped at seven.
The house remained silent.
Ortiz ordered everyone outside.
They reached the road as fire erupted from the basement windows.
The records inside the house were lost.
But the underground structure survived.
Daniel was airlifted to St. Catherine’s Hospital.
Amelia traveled under armed guard.
D-3 remained missing.
Police recovered an empty boat on the opposite side of the lake. Blood on the seat matched D-3, but there was no body.
Claire went into active labor during the helicopter flight.
Dr. Patel administered medication to slow the contractions.
At the hospital, the baby’s heart rate stabilized.
Daniel remained unconscious in intensive care.
Rose refused to leave Claire’s room.
She slept curled in a chair with the silver lily in her hand.
Near dawn, Claire woke to find Amelia standing behind the glass observation wall with two officers.
Claire allowed her inside.
Amelia sat near the bed.
Neither spoke for a long time.
Finally, Claire asked, “Who is the father of F-05?”
Amelia looked at the fetal monitor.
“The answer depends on what you mean by father.”
“Do not speak to me in riddles.”
“The embryo was created from your egg.”
“And the paternal DNA?”
“D-4.”
Claire exhaled.
“Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“The test identified Vale.”
“Because every D-series child carries sections of Vale’s engineered genome. The laboratory used an old reference profile and reached an incomplete conclusion.”
Claire studied her mother’s face.
“Why did Evelyn say the baby wasn’t supposed to survive?”
“Because your child has inherited complete resistance.”
“To the compound?”
“To all known Bellwether conditioning methods.”
“Then why poison me?”
“The compound prevented your altered immune system from rejecting the embryo.”
“Could they have used something safer?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t they?”
“Because Evelyn needed you confused.”
Claire looked toward Daniel’s room across the hall.
“Did he know about the embryo transfer?”
“He knew Evelyn planned another attempt. He tried to stop her.”
“Rose said the other Daniel held him down.”
Amelia nodded.
“D-3 helped perform the transfer.”
Claire’s hand moved protectively over her stomach.
“Why is this child so important?”
Amelia glanced at Rose.
“Rose inherited part of the resistance, but not enough to free herself from every command. F-05 may be the first child Bellwether cannot control.”
“So they want to study the baby.”
“Some do.”
“And the others?”
“They want the baby dead before birth.”
Claire remembered Evelyn’s statement.
That child was never supposed to survive this long.
“Where is Evelyn now?”
Amelia’s expression changed.
“No one told you?”
“Told me what?”
“Evelyn escaped police custody during the attack at Lake Ardon.”
Claire reached for the call button.
Amelia caught her wrist.
“Wait.”
“Why?”
“Because the person who helped her escape may be inside this hospital.”
Claire looked toward the hallway.
Two guards stood outside.
Nurses moved between rooms.
Everything appeared normal.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“You always know more than you say.”
“Yes.”
“Then start saying it.”
Amelia removed the serpent ring.
She placed it on the table.
Inside the band was a tiny strip of transparent material.
“A data key,” she said.
“The ledger?”
“One part.”
“You divided the location among three people.”
“You hold the first sequence. Daniel holds the second. Rose holds the third.”
“Nora said the first child held one part.”
“She meant Rose.”
“Where is the ledger?”
“The sequences do not reveal a place. They unlock a system.”
“What system?”
Amelia looked toward the dark window.
“An archive of every child Bellwether created, every family they entered, every identity they replaced, and every official who protected them.”
“Why hide it?”
“Because releasing it without control could destroy thousands of lives.”
“Those people deserve to know.”
“Some of them are not only victims.”
Claire understood.
“Some are agents.”
“Yes.”
“Like D-3.”
“Like people much closer to you.”
The fetal monitor changed rhythm.
Dr. Patel entered and checked the readings.
“The baby is active.”
Rose woke in the chair.
She looked toward Claire’s stomach.
“Can I feel?”
Claire nodded.
Rose placed her palm against the curve.
The baby kicked beneath her hand.
Rose smiled.
Then her expression became distant.
Her fingers tightened.
“Rose?”
The child whispered a series of numbers.
Amelia stood abruptly.
“What did she say?”
Rose repeated them.
Claire recognized the book code pattern.
Amelia grabbed a notepad and wrote the sequence.
“What does it mean?” Claire asked.
Amelia’s face had turned pale.
“That sequence should not be inside Rose.”
“Why?”
“It belongs to F-05.”
The room fell silent.
Dr. Patel checked the fetal monitor again.
Rose looked at Claire with frightened eyes.
“I heard the baby talking.”
Claire pulled her closer.
“It was probably a memory.”
“No.”
Rose pointed toward the hospital intercom.
“The baby said someone is coming.”
A chime sounded above the door.
The intercom activated by itself.
At first, only static filled the room.
Then Daniel’s voice came through the speaker.
“Claire, do not trust the woman beside you.”
Claire turned toward the intensive care unit.
Daniel was still unconscious.
The voice continued.
“Amelia did not escape Bellwether.”
Amelia moved toward the intercom.
“She became Bellwether.”
The lights flickered.
Every monitor changed to the same video feed.
A security camera showed the hospital nursery.
A woman in a nurse’s uniform walked between the rows of newborns.
She raised her face toward the camera.
Evelyn.
In her hands was an ornate silver cup.
She smiled directly at Claire through the screen.
Then she stepped aside.
Behind the nursery glass stood D-3.
Beside him was a boy of about twelve.
The boy had Daniel’s face.
Amelia whispered, “D-5.”
Claire looked at her.
“You said there were only four D-series children.”
“I believed there were.”
The boy raised one hand and pressed it against the glass.
On his finger was a serpent ring.
The hospital doors locked simultaneously.
A mechanical voice announced a security isolation.
Daniel’s voice returned through the intercom.
This time, it sounded awake.
Desperate.
“They did not come for the baby.”
Claire stared at the monitor.
“Then what do they want?”
The boy on the screen turned toward Evelyn.
Evelyn handed him the silver cup.
May you like
Daniel whispered the final words before the intercom went silent.
“They came to wake the others.”
