Chapter 14 - THE MOTHER WHO BUILT THE CAGE

Claire crossed the gate before Ortiz could stop her.
“Mother.”
Amelia remained on the porch.
She looked exactly like the woman in the photograph, older and thinner than Claire remembered, but alive.
Claire wanted to run to her.
She also wanted to demand sixteen years back.
Ortiz and the tactical officers advanced behind cover.
Amelia spoke through the outdoor speaker.
“Claire, they will shoot if you come closer.”
“Then tell them to release Rose and Daniel.”
“D-4 is receiving treatment.”
“You mean conditioning.”
“He is damaged.”
“You damaged him.”
Amelia’s face tightened.
“I tried to save him.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“Your father gave me no choice.”
“You had sixteen years.”
“I contacted you whenever it became safe.”
“You sent riddles.”
“I sent what the surveillance system would allow.”
Claire looked at the serpent ring.
“Why are you wearing their symbol?”
Amelia glanced at her hand.
“This symbol existed before Gideon Vale used it.”
“What does it mean?”
“Continuity.”
“Where is Rose?”
Amelia stepped aside.
The little girl appeared in the doorway.
She had dark hair and Claire’s eyes.
A silver lily rested against her blue sweater.
Claire’s body reacted before her mind did.
Every instinct moved toward the child.
“Rose.”
The girl stared at Claire’s stomach.
“You look like the drawings.”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Come to me.”
Rose looked up at Amelia.
Amelia placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Not yet.”
Claire’s grief turned to anger.
“Let her go.”
“The gate is monitored by Vale’s people.”
“You said Vale isn’t in control.”
“He controls part of the network. Evelyn controls another. D-3 serves whoever gives him the strongest chemical command.”
“Who do you serve?”
Amelia’s gaze did not waver.
“You.”
“Then open the gate.”
Amelia lifted a small device.
The gate unlocked.
Ortiz ordered Rose to walk forward alone.
Rose took one step.
A gunshot cracked from the trees.
The bullet struck the stone beside Amelia.
Everyone moved at once.
Police returned fire toward the far shoreline.
Amelia pulled Rose inside.
Claire was forced behind the armored vehicle.
A second shooter opened fire from a boat.
The tactical team split toward the house and water.
Dr. Patel dragged Claire into the medical vehicle as a contraction tightened across her abdomen.
“Breathe.”
“My daughter is inside.”
“And your other child may be coming now.”
Claire looked at the monitor.
The contractions were six minutes apart.
“Too early.”
“Stress may be accelerating labor.”
An explosion shook the gate.
Smoke covered the driveway.
Through the open rear doors, Claire saw D-3 emerge from the house carrying Rose.
A pistol was pressed against the child’s side.
Amelia followed with blood on her sleeve.
D-3 shouted, “Stop shooting.”
The police held fire.
Claire stepped down from the vehicle.
Dr. Patel tried to stop her.
“Let Rose go,” Claire said.
D-3 looked exactly like Daniel.
No scar.
No fear.
“You need to come inside.”
“Where is Daniel?”
“In the basement.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
Rose stared at Claire.
“Mother, he changed after the injection.”
D-3 tightened his grip.
“Be quiet.”
Claire moved one step forward.
“You don’t want to hurt her.”
“I do not want anything.”
“That is what they made you believe.”
His expression remained blank.
Behind him, Amelia slowly moved her uninjured hand toward her pocket.
D-3 noticed.
He turned the gun toward her.
Rose bit his arm.
The gun fired.
Amelia fell.
Claire ran.
Police rushed the porch.
D-3 dragged Rose toward the side of the house.
A tactical officer struck him from behind.
Rose broke free and ran directly into Claire’s arms.
The contact triggered something inside Claire.
A hospital room.
Rose as a newborn against her chest.
Daniel whispering, “I’ll find you both.”
Amelia crying near the door.
Then Evelyn entering with a syringe.
Claire collapsed to her knees, holding Rose.
“I remember you.”
Rose wrapped both arms around her neck.
“I knew you would.”
Inside the house, officers found Daniel chained in the basement.
He was unconscious but alive.
D-3 had disappeared through a tunnel leading to the lake.
Amelia had been shot through the shoulder.
The wound was serious but not fatal.
As paramedics treated her, Claire stood nearby with Rose.
“You could have brought her to me years ago,” Claire said.
Amelia looked at the child.
“Rose carries the first part of the ledger location.”
“You used her memory.”
“I protected the information inside patterns Vale could not chemically erase.”
“You turned your granddaughter into a storage device.”
“I kept her alive.”
“You sound like Evelyn.”
The words struck Amelia harder than the bullet.
Claire turned away.
A scream came from inside the house.
One of the officers shouted for Dr. Patel.
Daniel had stopped breathing.
Claire followed the medical team into the basement.
Daniel lay on the floor beside the broken chains.
Dr. Patel began resuscitation.
Claire saw the scar across his back.
D-4.
Her Daniel.
His eyes opened briefly.
“Claire.”
“I’m here.”
“D-3 took the ledger key.”
“We’ll find him.”
Daniel gripped her wrist.
“No. He took the wrong one.”
“What do you mean?”
Daniel tried to speak again.
The monitor alarmed.
Dr. Patel ordered Claire back.
As the team worked, Amelia appeared at the basement entrance.
She looked at Daniel with an expression Claire could not understand.
“He remembered,” Amelia whispered.
“Remembered what?”
“The truth about F-05.”
Claire turned.
“What truth?”
Before Amelia answered, the house lights died.
An automated voice began counting down from sixty.
May you like
Daniel’s eyes opened.
“Run.”
