Chapter 13 - thomas returned before anyone called him)

At 10:12 Christmas morning, the front door opened.

Nobody had called Thomas Hartwell.

Yet he walked into the foyer carrying an overnight bag.

Rachel stood so abruptly her chair scraped across the library floor.

"Dad?"

Thomas looked surprised to see Caroline Shaw.

Then his eyes moved to Emily.

Then the wedding ring in her hand.

He stopped.

"Where did you get that?"

Emily's pulse quickened.

"You recognize it?"

Thomas looked toward Margaret.

She was staring at him with pure warning.

Emily stepped closer.

"Thomas."

Rachel moved beside her.

"Dad, answer her."

Thomas set the bag down.

"That was Clara's ring."

Robert stood.

"How do you know?"

Thomas looked at his brother.

"Because I bought it."

Nobody breathed.

Emily felt the floor shift beneath her again.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Rachel whispered, "Dad."

Thomas's face was full of regret.

"It's not what you think."

Emily almost laughed.

"Nobody in this house should ever say that sentence again."

Thomas nodded slowly.

"Fair."

Robert approached his brother.

"You bought Clara an engagement ring?"

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

"Then why?"

Thomas looked at Emily.

"It belonged to your grandmother first."

"My mother's mother?"

"Yes."

Emily stared.

"Why were you involved?"

"Because Clara needed money in 1998."

"For what?"

Thomas glanced toward Margaret.

Margaret spoke.

"Don't."

He looked at her.

"For once, I think I will."

Robert's voice became quiet.

"What happened October seventeenth?"

Thomas walked into the library.

He sat.

Everyone else slowly followed.

"Clara came to me after the argument here. She believed Margaret had forged the waiver."

Robert closed his eyes.

Thomas continued.

"She wanted money for legal fees. She refused to ask you because she believed you'd already chosen Margaret's story."

Robert whispered, "She was right."

"Yes."

Emily asked, "So she sold the ring?"

Thomas nodded.

"I bought it from her."

"Why not loan her money?"

"I offered. She refused. Said she didn't want to owe another Hartwell anything."

That sounded exactly like Clara.

Emily felt tears finally threaten.

Thomas continued.

"I paid far more than the ring was worth."

Margaret scoffed.

"You always loved playing savior."

Thomas ignored her.

"Years later, I gave the ring to Margaret."

Emily frowned.

"Why?"

Thomas looked ashamed.

"Because she told me Clara wanted Emily to have it someday."

Emily stared at Margaret.

"And then you gave it to Daniel."

Margaret said nothing.

Thomas looked shocked.

"You told me it was lost."

Margaret's face hardened.

"It was none of your business."

Thomas stood.

"You used Clara's ring to manipulate her daughter?"

Margaret snapped, "Daniel loved her."

Emily laughed bitterly.

"Eventually."

Thomas looked at Daniel.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Rachel rubbed her forehead.

"This family needs professional supervision."

Caroline Shaw almost smiled.

Then Emily remembered the note.

She held up the tiny strip.

"Clara hid your name inside the ring."

Thomas froze.

"Show me."

Emily handed it to him.

He read the date.

Then looked toward Margaret.

"She found it."

Margaret's face went blank.

Robert asked, "Found what?"

Thomas stood slowly.

"Schedule B."

Emily's pulse jumped.

"You've seen it."

Thomas nodded.

"Once."

"Where?"

"Clara showed it to me the night of October seventeenth."

Robert moved closer.

"What did it say?"

Thomas stared at Emily.

"It established Clara's beneficial ownership percentage and certain future rights."

"What rights?"

"I don't remember every clause."

"Try."

Thomas took a breath.

"If Clara died before the dispute was resolved, her interest did not automatically return to Robert."

Emily whispered, "It came to me."

"Partly."

"Partly?"

Thomas nodded.

"There was another condition."

Margaret said sharply, "Thomas."

He ignored her.

"What condition?"

Thomas looked toward Daniel.

"Marriage."

Emily's stomach turned.

"What about marriage?"

"If Emily ever married into the Hartwell family, a different provision activated."

Everyone stared at Daniel.

Emily felt cold.

"So Margaret wanted Daniel to marry me because of Schedule B."

Thomas shook his head.

"That wouldn't make sense."

"Why?"

"Because the marriage provision protected you more strongly."

Margaret's face changed.

Thomas saw it.

"So she didn't know."

Emily frowned.

"Didn't know what?"

Thomas stared at Margaret.

"She knew Schedule B existed. She knew Emily was named. But she never read the final version."

Margaret shouted, "Enough."

Thomas continued.

"Clara changed it after the argument."

Robert whispered, "Without telling us."

"She didn't need Margaret's approval for her own beneficial estate instructions."

Caroline leaned forward.

"Do you remember the condition?"

Thomas nodded slowly.

"I remember the principle."

Emily waited.

Thomas said, "Clara believed Margaret might someday pressure Emily through marriage. So she added a clause making any transfer executed under direct coercion or while married to a Hartwell subject to independent review."

Caroline's eyebrows rose.

Margaret looked furious.

Emily almost laughed.

For thirty years, Margaret had tried to prevent the very protection her actions kept triggering.

But Thomas wasn't finished.

"There's more."

Emily's smile vanished.

"Of course there is."

"Clara didn't trust me with the document. She didn't trust Robert. She definitely didn't trust Margaret."

"Who did she trust?"

Thomas looked at the brass key.

"The bank."

Emily nodded.

"Box 317."

Thomas went pale.

"You found the key."

Margaret stepped forward.

"Thomas."

He ignored her.

Emily asked, "What is inside?"

Thomas's voice lowered.

"The final Schedule B."

Relief almost hit Emily.

Then Thomas added, "And a statement Clara recorded after the confrontation."

"A written statement?"

"No."

He looked toward Robert.

"Video."

Margaret sank slowly into a chair.

Robert stared at his wife.

"What did Clara record?"

Thomas answered quietly.

"Everything she said happened in this house that night."

Margaret stood again.

"She's dead. A recording proves nothing."

Caroline looked at her.

"Then you shouldn't be worried."

Margaret grabbed her handbag.

Robert moved toward the door.

"Where are you going?"

"Away from this circus."

Emily watched her.

Margaret had spent the whole night trying to force Emily out of the house.

Now Margaret was the one desperate to leave.

Emily said, "Go."

Everyone turned.

Margaret stared at her.

Emily continued.

"I'm not stopping you."

Margaret smiled.

"You think you've won?"

Emily shook her head.

"No."

She held up the key.

"I think you've finally stopped deciding what I know."

Margaret walked out.

The front door slammed.

Daniel watched his mother leave.

Then he looked at Emily.

"What happens now?"

Emily turned toward the window.

Snow continued to fall over the enormous front lawn.

"Now we wait until the bank opens."

Thomas said quietly, "You may not need to."

Emily turned.

May you like

He reached into his coat.

And removed a second key.
