THE CHILD BENEATH THE GALA / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - the voice that remained inside the house

The melody drifted from the east wing after midnight.

Mary Jane woke first.

She sat upright in bed, listening to the same fragile notes she had played inside Saint Orison’s Chapel.

The music box rested on a shelf across the room.

Its handle was turning.

No one stood beside it.

Mary Jane climbed from bed and approached carefully.

The melody stopped.

A quiet click came from inside the box.

The lower panel opened.

Mary Jane had never known it contained a second compartment.

Inside was a narrow strip of magnetic tape and a folded note written in Eleanor’s handwriting.

For Mary Jane, when Ashford House finally feels safe.

Mary Jane carried the music box to Julian’s room.

He woke immediately when she knocked.

Together, they went to the library, where an old tape player had been preserved among Thomas’s belongings.

Mrs. Dallow and Daniel joined them.

Julian inserted the tape.

Eleanor’s voice filled the room.

“My darling Mary Jane, if you are hearing this, then you found Julian, and Julian chose to believe you.”

Mary Jane pressed both hands against her mouth.

Eleanor continued.

“I am sorry I could not tell you everything while I was alive. I thought silence would keep you safe. I understand now that silence only gave them more time.”

Julian leaned closer to the player.

“Adrian believes he is your father,” Eleanor said. “Thomas believed the same after the first test. But the sample used in that test did not belong to Adrian.”

Julian looked at Mary Jane.

The tape crackled.

“Someone changed the laboratory records. Someone wanted Adrian to believe you were his child because it gave him a reason to protect the trust until he could control it.”

Daniel moved toward the telephone.

“We need the original laboratory archive.”

Eleanor’s voice continued.

“Victoria knew only part of the plan. Elias knew even less. Adrian was never the person at the top.”

Mrs. Dallow gripped the back of a chair.

“Then who was?”

On the recording, Eleanor began to say a name.

The library power failed.

Darkness covered the room.

Daniel drew his weapon.

Julian pulled Mary Jane behind him.

The tape player continued on its internal batteries.

“The person who ordered the transfers,” Eleanor said, “is someone Thomas trusted inside Ashford House. Someone who was present the night Celeste died.”

A floorboard creaked in the corridor.

Daniel moved toward the door.

Eleanor’s voice became quieter.

“Julian, before you accuse Adrian of every crime, ask who taught him to hate your father. Ask who gave him the Ashford ring. And ask why your mother’s body was never examined by an independent doctor.”

The front doorbell rang.

Once.

Then twice.

Emergency lights came on.

A security alert appeared on Daniel’s phone.

The mansion gates had opened using Thomas Ashford’s personal access code.

“That code was deleted after his death,” Daniel said.

A black car had stopped beneath the portico.

The driver’s door opened.

A person stepped out wearing a long dark coat.

The cameras could not capture the face.

Julian listened as footsteps entered the mansion.

No guard challenged the visitor.

The tape reached its final seconds.

Eleanor whispered, “Mary Jane, the man you fear may not be your father. But your real father is closer than any of us imagined.”

The library door handle slowly turned.

Mary Jane stared at it.

From the corridor, a man spoke.

“I came for my daughter.”

Mary Jane’s face went pale.

Julian stepped in front of her.

The door opened only a few inches.

A hand appeared around the edge.

On one finger was an Ashford signet ring.

Mrs. Dallow gasped.

She recognized the hand.

Before she could speak the name, a second voice sounded from the darkness behind them.

“Do not open that door.”

Julian turned.

Someone was already inside the library.

May you like

And Mary Jane realized the final recording had never been warning them about the person outside.

It had been warning them about the person standing beside them.
