THE CHILD BENEATH THE GALA / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - the bride behind the locked glass

Julian reached the hotel within twenty minutes.

The private floor was under police guard, but every camera feed had frozen at the same time. Victoria’s attorney was found unconscious in the elevator, shaken but alive.

Victoria’s suite was locked from the inside.

Daniel forced the door.

The rooms were empty.

A window stood open thirty floors above the street, but there was no sign that anyone had fallen. A maintenance rope hung outside, reaching toward a neighboring rooftop.

On the glass table lay Victoria’s engagement ring.

Beneath it was a handwritten message.

Ask the child what Eleanor buried beneath the nursery.

Julian returned to Mary Jane.

She was sitting beside Mrs. Dallow, drawing a picture of Ashford House.

“There was a nursery?” Julian asked.

Mary Jane pointed to a small tower in the picture.

“My mother took me there once.”

“When?”

“Before she died. We entered through a door in the greenhouse.”

“What did she bury?”

“I don’t remember.”

Julian knelt beside her.

“You are not in trouble. Think about the room.”

Mary Jane closed her eyes.

“There were clouds painted on the ceiling. A wooden horse. A broken window. My mother lifted a floorboard.”

“What did she put beneath it?”

“A silver case.”

“Did she take it with her?”

Mary Jane shook her head.

The old nursery stood in the northern tower of Ashford House. It had been locked since Celeste’s death.

Julian, Mary Jane, Daniel, and two detectives entered through the greenhouse passage.

Clouds still covered the ceiling. Dust lay across a wooden rocking horse. One window was cracked exactly as Mary Jane remembered.

Beneath the seventh floorboard, they found a silver case.

Inside was the original founder’s trust.

The document proved that Thomas’s father had not owned the Ashford estate outright. He had served as trustee for Celeste and her descendants.

If Adrian was Celeste’s eldest son, he possessed a legitimate claim to part of the estate.

But the trust contained another clause.

Any beneficiary who used coercion, fraud, or violence to obtain control would permanently lose all rights.

Eleanor had gathered evidence specifically to activate that clause.

There was also a sealed DNA report.

Julian opened it.

Mary Jane held his hand.

The result confirmed that Mary Jane was biologically related to Julian through his mother’s family.

She was Adrian’s daughter.

Julian read the page again.

Mary Jane watched his face.

“He is my father.”

“Yes.”

“Is he the man who hurt my mother?”

Julian did not lie.

“I believe he ordered it.”

Mary Jane looked toward the rocking horse.

“Then I don’t want his name.”

“You are not responsible for who he is.”

“Will he come for me?”

“He will never take you.”

Daniel examined the rest of the case.

Beneath the trust was a list of account numbers and locations connected to A.V. Holdings. It was enough to freeze the organization’s assets and reopen all eleven guardianship cases.

For the first time, they possessed evidence Adrian could not easily erase.

A telephone rang inside the nursery.

The old wall phone had not been connected in years.

Julian answered.

Charles Whitmore spoke.

“You finally opened your mother’s room.”

“Where is Victoria?”

“Safe.”

“Where is Helena?”

“Also safe.”

“You are Adrian.”

A quiet laugh traveled through the line.

“Adrian was a frightened boy Thomas erased. Charles was the man he invited back into his house. Neither name explains what I became.”

“You killed Eleanor.”

“She was taking my daughter away.”

“She was protecting Mary Jane from you.”

“She was stealing the only family I had left.”

“You abandoned them.”

“I watched them every day.”

Mary Jane heard the voice and moved closer.

Charles continued.

“Thomas convinced Eleanor that I was dangerous. Then he created documents that made you my daughter’s protector.”

“The evidence made you dangerous.”

“The evidence was created by men who stole my inheritance.”

Julian looked at the original trust.

“You lose every claim the moment this reaches the court.”

“Only if it reaches the court.”

Police lights suddenly appeared through the nursery window.

Daniel received a message.

The district attorney had obtained emergency warrants using the financial records.

A.V. Holdings accounts were being frozen across three countries.

Julian spoke into the phone.

“It is already over.”

“No,” Charles said. “It is finally beginning.”

The call ended.

On the nursery wall, the painted clouds began shifting.

A hidden projector turned on.

A live image appeared.

Victoria sat inside a glass room with Helena Frost and Elias Mercer.

All three were alive.

A digital clock above them began counting down from sixty minutes.
