Chapter 2 - The Sealed Envelope

Edward Whitmore never raised his voice.
He didn't need to.
Five hundred employees remained frozen as the elderly chairman stood beneath the dazzling lights, holding the sealed document that had instantly drained all confidence from Julian's face.
Only the clicking of camera shutters disturbed the silence.
Clara watched her husband's expression carefully.
For twelve years she had learned to read every tiny movement of his face.
The slight twitch beneath his left eye.
The tightening jaw.
The forced smile.
He was afraid.
Not embarrassed.
Afraid.
That realization surprised her more than the kiss itself.
Julian had always believed fear belonged to other people.
Never to him.
He cleared his throat and forced a laugh.
"Chairman, surely this isn't the appropriate time for legal discussions."
Edward continued staring at him.
"I disagree."
Julian spread his arms toward the audience.
"We're celebrating twenty-five years of Ashford Global."
"The company can celebrate after the truth is addressed."
A ripple of whispers spread across the ballroom.
"What truth?"
"What is happening?"
"Did something happen to the company?"
Sienna tightened her grip around Julian's arm.
She leaned closer.
"Don't worry."
Her voice barely moved above a whisper.
"You said everything was already handled."
Julian didn't answer.
Instead...
He stared at the envelope.
Like a man recognizing an old enemy.
Across the ballroom, Clara noticed something else.
The attorneys weren't looking at Julian.
They were watching her.
Every single one of them.
As though they had been waiting for her arrival.
One attorney quietly approached.
He stopped a respectful distance away.
"Mrs. Ashford."
His tone was formal.
"Miss Clara Whitmore..."
He corrected himself.
"...this belongs to you."
He handed her the second envelope.
Clara frowned.
"My maiden name?"
The attorney simply nodded.
"Please don't open it yet."
Julian suddenly stepped forward.
"What is that?"
The attorney answered without hesitation.
"Private legal correspondence."
"I'm the CEO."
"It is not addressed to you."
Julian's smile disappeared completely.
Clara slowly examined the envelope.
Heavy ivory paper.
Dark blue wax seal.
The Whitmore family crest.
She hadn't seen that crest in years.
Not since the day she left her father's estate to marry Julian against everyone's wishes.
Her fingers unconsciously brushed the embossed symbol.
A memory flashed across her mind...
The day Edward Whitmore had looked at Julian and quietly said:
"If you ever mistake my daughter's kindness for weakness..."
"...you will lose more than you can imagine."
At the time, Julian had laughed.
May you like
Tonight...
He wasn't laughing anymore.
