Chapter 1 - The Kiss That Changed Everything

The applause inside the Imperial Grand Ballroom was deafening.

Crystal chandeliers scattered golden light across five hundred elegantly dressed employees. Cameras flashed from every direction. Giant LED screens displayed the company's silver anniversary logo while the orchestra played a triumphant melody.

Julian Ashford stood confidently in the center of the stage.

Forty-two years old.

CEO of Ashford Global Holdings.

The youngest executive ever to lead the billion-dollar corporation.

Tonight was supposed to celebrate his greatest achievement.

Instead...

It became the night his empire began to crack.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the host announced with excitement, "please welcome our remarkable CEO!"

The audience rose to their feet.

Thunderous applause echoed through the ballroom.

Julian smiled like a man who believed he owned the world.

Then Sienna Blake walked onto the stage.

She wore a breathtaking crimson evening gown that shimmered beneath the lights. Her long dark hair rested perfectly on one shoulder, and confidence radiated from every step she took.

Most employees knew her only as Julian's executive secretary.

Only a handful understood how unusually close the two had become during the past year.

Julian opened his arms.

Everyone assumed it would be a formal congratulatory embrace.

Instead...

Sienna suddenly grabbed his face with both hands.

Before anyone could react—

She kissed him.

Not a polite kiss.

Not an accidental one.

A slow...

Passionate...

Deliberate kiss.

The ballroom exploded.

Gasps.

Cheers.

Whispers.

Hundreds of smartphones instantly rose into the air.

Some people laughed.

Others stared in disbelief.

Across the ballroom...

A champagne glass shattered against the marble floor.

Clara Ashford stood frozen.

She hadn't even finished walking toward the VIP tables when she saw her husband kissing another woman before five hundred employees.

For three endless seconds...

She couldn't breathe.

The room spun around her.

Then instinct took over.

She sprinted toward the stage.

"Julian!"

Her voice sliced through the applause.

Every head turned.

The orchestra stopped playing.

Silence swallowed the ballroom.

Clara climbed the stairs without slowing.

"Get your hands off my husband!"

Her voice echoed through the microphones.

Sienna slowly released Julian.

Instead of looking embarrassed...

She smiled.

A smile filled with absolute confidence.

She gently wiped her bright red lipstick across Julian's lips with her thumb.

Then looked directly into Clara's eyes.

"Too late."

The words were barely louder than a whisper.

Yet every nearby microphone captured them perfectly.

A wave of shocked murmurs swept through the audience.

Julian sighed as if Clara were the one causing a scene.

"You shouldn't have come."

Clara stared at him.

"...What?"

"You heard me."

His expression contained no guilt.

No shame.

No apology.

Only annoyance.

"I said you shouldn't have come."

Something inside Clara broke.

"Julian..."

"I'm your wife."

He looked around at hundreds of watching employees.

Then laughed.

A cold...

Cruel laugh.

"Wife?"

He adjusted his expensive tuxedo.

"You've acted more like dead weight these past few years."

The audience collectively inhaled.

No one expected those words.

Not here.

Not tonight.

Clara's hands trembled.

"Dead weight?"

Julian stepped closer.

"You haven't contributed anything to this company."

"You don't understand business."

"You don't belong beside me anymore."

Every sentence struck harder than the last.

Employees exchanged nervous glances.

Some quietly lowered their phones.

Others continued recording.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody stopped him.

Then Sienna casually wrapped one arm around Julian's waist.

As though she belonged there.

As though Clara had never existed.

"You heard the CEO."

She smiled sweetly.

"Why don't you leave before this gets even more embarrassing?"

Clara stared at both of them.

The people she'd trusted.

The husband she'd supported for twelve years.

The secretary she'd personally hired three years ago.

Neither showed the slightest hint of remorse.

Then...

Julian pushed her.

Not hard enough to appear violent.

But hard enough.

Clara lost her balance.

Her heel caught the edge of the stage.

She fell.

The impact echoed across the silent ballroom.

Her elbow slammed against polished marble.

Pain exploded through her arm.

One high heel snapped completely.

For a heartbeat...

Nobody moved.

Then laughter spread through different corners of the ballroom.

Quiet at first.

Then louder.

Someone whispered,

"How pathetic."

Another person laughed openly.

A third employee raised his phone higher to record.

Sienna slowly walked down one step.

Looked at Clara lying on the floor.

Then deliberately nudged the broken heel aside with the tip of her designer shoe.

"Oh dear."

She giggled.

"Looks like even your shoes know it's time to leave."

More laughter.

Julian never offered his wife a hand.

Instead, he adjusted his cufflinks.

"Security."

Two guards immediately stepped forward.

"Escort Mrs. Ashford outside."

Clara looked at the guards.

Neither could meet her eyes.

They had worked beside her for years.

They knew she had helped build this company from almost nothing.

Yet...

They obeyed Julian.

Because Julian was CEO.

At least...

That's what everyone believed.

Clara slowly pushed herself upright.

Blood trickled down her elbow.

Her expensive white dress was stained.

Her breathing became strangely calm.

The humiliation no longer hurt.

Something else replaced it.

Resolve.

She reached into her handbag.

Pulled out her phone.

Opened a conversation that had remained untouched for almost eight months.

Only one contact.

Dad.

She typed exactly four words.

It's your turn now.

She pressed Send.

Then slipped the phone back into her purse.

No threats.

No screaming.

No tears.

Just silence.

Julian laughed.

"Finished embarrassing yourself?"

Clara looked directly into his eyes.

For the first time that evening...

She smiled.

Not happily.

Not sadly.

Knowingly.

"You really should have let me walk away."

Before Julian could answer—

The ballroom doors opened.

Slowly.

Heavily.

Every conversation stopped.

An elderly man wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal suit entered the hall.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

Behind him walked two board members.

Three corporate attorneys.

Four security officers.

The chairman of Ashford Global Holdings.

Edward Whitmore.

No one had expected him to attend.

He had supposedly retired six months earlier due to health concerns.

Yet there he was.

Walking with the quiet confidence of someone who feared absolutely nothing.

Every board member immediately stood.

Several executives instinctively lowered their heads.

Julian's smile faded.

"Chairman..."

Edward ignored him.

He continued walking.

One measured step after another.

Until he stood only a few feet from the stage.

He slowly removed a thick cream-colored envelope sealed with dark blue wax.

The company lawyers watched silently.

One attorney unlocked a polished aluminum briefcase.

Edward accepted a leather-bound folder.

Then looked directly at Julian.

For nearly ten seconds...

He said nothing.

The silence became unbearable.

Finally...

He spoke.

"Before this ceremony continues..."

His calm voice echoed through every speaker.

"...there is one question that must be answered."

Julian swallowed.

"What question?"

Edward lifted the sealed document.

His expression remained unreadable.

"Who actually owns this company?"

The ballroom fell completely silent.

No one noticed...

A woman in a black business suit quietly entered through a side door.

May you like

She carried another envelope.

One marked with Clara's name.
