Chapter 8 - The Trap

The emergency trust hearing began without Vittorio.
James appeared by video on behalf of the Romano family.
Marcus attended with two attorneys.
Bianca did not appear.
She claimed emotional distress.
The judge temporarily froze several trust-controlled accounts and ordered a forensic audit.
Marcus looked exhausted by the time he returned to his townhouse.
At 11:18 a.m., his private phone rang.
Nicholas Vane’s voice came through.
“Marcus.”
Marcus went silent.
“Who is this?”
“Samuel’s son.”
Another silence.
Then Marcus ended the call.
Nicholas called again.
Marcus did not answer.
A text followed.
Bellhaven needs two signatures.
Marcus called back within twenty seconds.
Nicholas smiled.
Vittorio listened through headphones from a secure room in Margaret’s cottage.
The call was being documented legally under Nicholas’s participation.
Marcus’s voice was low.
“What do you want?”
“My share.”
“You don’t have a share.”
“I have control.”
“You have nothing.”
Nicholas read part of the declaration.
Marcus stopped pretending.
“Where did you get that?”
“My mother.”
“Samuel told me she destroyed those letters.”
“She didn’t.”
Marcus breathed heavily.
Nicholas continued.
“I know the current value.”
No answer.
“Ninety-one million.”
Marcus whispered, “You idiot.”
“Meet me.”
“Why?”
“Because Bianca needs my authorization. And if I’m not paid, I give everything to Vittorio.”
Marcus laughed nervously.
“You think he’ll reward you?”
“I don’t care.”
“Then what do you want?”
“Twenty million.”
Marcus cursed.
Nicholas remained silent.
Finally Marcus said, “You don’t understand the situation.”
“Explain it.”
“The money isn’t liquid.”
“Not my problem.”
“Bianca hasn’t completed her part.”
“What part?”
A long pause.
Vittorio leaned toward the speaker.
Marcus answered.
“Marriage.”
Nicholas frowned.
“Why does marriage matter?”
“Because Samuel built contingencies.”
“What contingencies?”
“I’m not discussing this by phone.”
“Then meet me.”
Another pause.
Marcus named a location.
An abandoned private club outside Boston.
Three o’clock.
The call ended.
Vittorio removed his headphones.
James looked at him.
“We notify investigators now.”
Vittorio nodded.
He had already agreed.
No private justice.
No threats.
No revenge disguised as negotiation.
Lucy needed a father, not a man in prison.
By 2:30, federal financial investigators and local authorities had been briefed on the evidence.
The meeting would proceed under observation.
Nicholas wore a recording device.
Vittorio watched from a surveillance van.
At 3:07, Marcus entered the abandoned club.
Alone.
He looked around.
“Nicholas?”
Nicholas stepped from near the bar.
Marcus stared.
“You look like him.”
“Samuel?”
“Yes.”
“Not a compliment.”
Marcus almost smiled.
Then Nicholas said, “Why did Bianca need to marry Vittorio?”
Marcus walked closer.
“You really want your twenty million?”
“Yes.”
“Then stop asking stupid questions.”
“I need to know what I’m signing.”
Marcus sighed.
“Bellhaven contains stolen Romano capital.”
“I know.”
“If Bianca married Vittorio, settlement structures could be integrated.”
“Money laundering.”
“Asset normalization.”
Nicholas laughed.
“Samuel taught you nice words.”
Marcus ignored it.
Nicholas continued.
“What about Lucy?”
Marcus’s face changed.
“Why are you asking about her?”
“Because her name appears everywhere.”
“She owns pieces of the future structure.”
“So?”
“So she complicates things.”
“How?”
Marcus looked around.
Then lowered his voice.
“Elena designed protections.”
“What protections?”
“Automatic independent review if Lucy controls certain holdings.”
“When?”
“Different triggers. Age milestones. Trustee changes.”
Nicholas nodded.
“So you wanted Bianca appointed guardian.”
“Originally.”
“And when Elena found out?”
Marcus stared.
Nicholas waited.
Marcus said, “Elena was going to destroy everything.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
Vittorio stopped breathing.
Nicholas pushed.
“She died conveniently.”
Marcus’s anger flashed.
“I didn’t kill Elena.”
“Bianca?”
“No.”
“Samuel?”
“He was already dead.”
“Then why did Elena write that she was afraid?”
Marcus looked toward the windows.
“Because I threatened her.”
Vittorio’s hands clenched.
Nicholas kept his voice neutral.
“With what?”
“I told her if she exposed the transfers, the scandal would destroy Vittorio’s companies and Lucy’s future.”
“Did she believe you?”
“No.”
A strange respect crossed Marcus’s face.
“Elena wasn’t easy to scare.”
“What happened the night before she died?”
Marcus hesitated.
Then spoke.
“I went to the mansion.”
Vittorio looked sharply at James.
No visitor record existed.
Nicholas asked, “Why?”
“To get the files.”
“Did she give them to you?”
“No.”
“What did you do?”
“We argued.”
“Did you touch her?”
Marcus looked offended.
“No.”
“Threaten Lucy?”
Silence.
Nicholas stepped closer.
“Did you threaten Lucy?”
Marcus whispered.
“I said if she destroyed all of us, her daughter would grow up inside the wreckage.”
Vittorio closed his eyes.
Nicholas asked the next question.
“What happened after you left?”
“Nothing. She was alive.”
“And the next day?”
“She died.”
“So you were lucky.”
Marcus looked sick.
“No. I was terrified.”
“Why?”
“Because before I left, Elena told me she had copied everything.”
Nicholas nodded.
“Which brings us to Emma.”
Marcus froze.
“What about Emma?”
“She recorded Bianca abusing Lucy.”
“That housekeeper should have minded her business.”
Vittorio stared at the monitor.
Nicholas continued.
“Was the dog food your idea?”
Marcus looked away.
“That was Bianca.”
“You laughed.”
“I made mistakes.”
“Seven incidents?”
Marcus frowned.
“What?”
Nicholas guessed.
“You knew Bianca had punished Lucy before.”
Marcus did not answer.
“That’s yes.”
Marcus finally snapped.
“I told Bianca to stop leaving marks.”
The surveillance van became completely silent.
Nicholas stared at him.
“You knew.”
“Bianca needed control.”
“Over a six-year-old?”
“You don’t understand Bianca.”
“Explain her.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“She spent years preparing to become Mrs. Romano. Lucy kept resisting. Every time Vittorio came home, the girl would cling to him. Bianca thought eventually Lucy would talk.”
“So you frightened her.”
“We managed the risk.”
Nicholas looked disgusted.
“And after the wedding?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Lucy would go away.”
“Boarding school?”
“At first.”
“At first?”
Marcus realized too late that he had said too much.
Nicholas stepped closer.
“What happened after boarding school?”
Marcus backed away.
“This conversation is over.”
“Ninety-one million.”
Marcus stopped.
Nicholas whispered.
“What was supposed to happen to Lucy?”
Marcus stared at him for several seconds.
Then he said, “Nothing if Bianca could keep Vittorio under control.”
“And if she couldn’t?”
Marcus looked toward the floor.
“There were options.”
“What options?”
Marcus opened his mouth.
A voice came from the entrance.
“I can answer that.”
May you like
Bianca stood in the doorway.
And she was holding a gun.
