Chapter 10 - Elena’s Last Secret

Vittorio returned to the mansion after sunset.

Lucy ran to him before he removed his coat.

He lifted her into his arms.

“Did you find Mommy’s truth?”

“Some of it.”

“Was she brave?”

He held her tighter.

“Yes.”

“Like me?”

The question broke through every defense he had left.

“Exactly like you.”

Rebecca watched from several feet away.

She had encouraged Vittorio not to overwhelm Lucy with details.

So he told her only what mattered.

Bianca and Marcus would not be returning.

Lucy had done nothing wrong.

Emma had helped.

Her mother had loved her.

She was safe.

After Lucy fell asleep, Vittorio went to Elena’s study.

Marcus’s final statement would not leave him.

Elena knew she was sick.

Vittorio called the hospital that had treated her.

Four years had passed, but records remained.

With legal authorization and spousal access to archived information, a physician reviewed Elena’s file.

There had been no diagnosed aneurysm before her death.

But there was something else.

Three weeks earlier, Elena had visited a neurologist.

Headaches.

Visual disturbances.

Dizziness.

An MRI had been scheduled.

Elena canceled it.

Vittorio sat alone at the desk.

Why?

He searched the hidden cabinet again.

Nothing.

Then he remembered the music box.

Where you first told her you loved her.

He removed the brass key.

Under the key compartment was another strip of folded paper.

One line.

V, forgive me for being stubborn. Check Florence.

Florence.

Vittorio stared.

Their first hotel.

Their first serious trip together.

The place where he had told Elena he loved her.

He called the hotel.

A decade had passed since their last stay.

Still, the Romano name opened doors.

A manager searched archived records.

There was a safe-deposit service once offered to long-term VIP guests.

Elena Romano had maintained one.

It had never been claimed.

Two days later, the sealed box arrived through secured legal transport.

Vittorio opened it with Lucy sitting beside him.

Inside were photographs, letters, and a small video camera.

The battery no longer worked.

A technician recovered the memory.

One video file existed.

Date: one day before Elena died.

Vittorio nearly stopped breathing.

He played it.

Elena appeared on screen inside the Florence hotel suite.

Older than when they first stayed there.

Tired.

Beautiful.

Alive.

“Vittorio.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

“If you are seeing this, then either I finally became dramatic enough to embarrass myself, or something went wrong before I could explain.”

She smiled.

It was Elena’s real smile.

The one no photograph ever captured properly.

“I’ve been having headaches.”

Vittorio leaned closer.

“I did not tell you because you were negotiating the Denver acquisition and because I am apparently incapable of behaving like a normal patient.”

She looked away.

“I’m scared.”

Lucy reached for Vittorio’s hand.

Elena continued.

“The doctor wants another scan. I canceled it because I wanted to finish the Marcus investigation first.”

Vittorio whispered, “No.”

Elena on screen could not hear him.

“I know what you would say.”

She smiled sadly.

“You would say no amount of money matters more than staying alive.”

Vittorio’s eyes filled.

“And you would be right.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“I’ll reschedule tomorrow.”

She never did.

The aneurysm ruptured the following afternoon.

Not murder.

Not poison.

Not Marcus.

A devastating coincidence worsened by Elena’s own decision to delay care.

Vittorio covered his face.

For years he had wondered whether he missed a sign.

Now he knew Elena had hidden the signs deliberately.

The video continued.

“If something happens, do not spend your life punishing yourself.”

Vittorio laughed through tears.

“You know me too well.”

Lucy looked at him.

Elena spoke again.

“And do not turn grief into a locked door around Lucy.”

Vittorio froze.

“Love someone again someday if you can.”

A pause.

“But make sure they love her first.”

Vittorio closed his eyes.

Bianca.

He had failed the one condition Elena had left him.

Lucy squeezed his hand.

Elena smiled from the screen.

“Lucy, if you ever see this when you’re old enough to understand, your mother loved you every second she was alive.”

Lucy began crying silently.

Vittorio pulled her into his lap.

The recording continued.

“I found evidence Marcus and Bianca Moretti are connected to Samuel’s old fraud. Margaret has copies. If Marcus realizes what I know, he may try to frighten me.”

Elena’s expression hardened.

“He cannot.”

Then she softened.

“I am more afraid of leaving without telling you the truth.”

The video ended.

Vittorio sat in silence.

Lucy wiped his cheek.

“Daddy.”

“Yes?”

“Mommy said don’t punish yourself.”

He looked at his six-year-old daughter.

Even now, she was protecting him.

He kissed her forehead.

“You’re right.”

Lucy leaned against him.

Then she noticed another item inside the Florence box.

A sealed envelope.

May you like

Her name was written on it.

For Lucy, when she needs to know who she is.
