Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Glass

Daniel reached the door first.

He threw his weight against it just as the figure attempted to push inside.

Claire pressed the emergency button beside Lily’s bed.

No alarm sounded.

The hospital’s main power had failed, and several security systems were temporarily offline.

The stranger outside pushed harder.

Daniel braced one foot against the wall.

“Claire, move Lily away from the door.”

The child began crying.

Claire lowered the bed rail and carefully pulled Lily toward the far side of the mattress.

“Cover your ears, sweetheart.”

The glass door shuddered.

Then the figure stepped back.

For one second, Claire saw a pale face behind the mask.

The emergency lights flickered on.

The hallway was empty.

Security guards arrived forty seconds later.

They found a discarded surgical cap near the stairwell and a stolen staff badge beside the elevator.

The badge belonged to a nurse who had reported it missing two days earlier.

No one was found in the stairwell.

The hospital entered lockdown.

Every exit was monitored. Police searched each floor, storage room, restroom, and maintenance corridor.

The intruder had disappeared.

Detective Grant returned before one in the morning.

He reviewed footage from the emergency cameras, but the person had avoided every functioning angle.

“They knew the hospital layout,” he said.

“Or someone inside is helping them,” Claire replied.

Grant examined the discarded cap.

A few strands of dark hair were caught inside.

Rachel’s hair was dark.

So was Evelyn’s.

So was Claire’s.

Daniel stood beside the window, holding a towel against the cut on his palm. The wound had reopened while he fought the door.

Grant looked at him.

“Your mother is on her way.”

“Why?”

“I asked her to come.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You think my mother was in that hallway?”

“We’re speaking with everyone who had access to Lily.”

“My mother is sixty-three.”

“And physically healthy.”

“She would never attack a child.”

Claire looked at him.

“You said the same thing about Rachel.”

Daniel did not respond.

Evelyn arrived twenty minutes later wearing a cream wool coat over a black evening dress. Her silver hair was perfectly arranged despite the hour.

She walked into the room as if entering a board meeting.

“My granddaughter nearly died, and no one called me until the police demanded my presence.”

Claire moved between Evelyn and Lily.

“You’re not going near her.”

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“You have no right to keep me from my family.”

“She is my daughter.”

“She is a Bennett.”

“She is not property.”

Detective Grant stepped forward.

“Mrs. Bennett, where were you at eleven forty-seven tonight?”

“At a charity dinner.”

“Witnesses?”

“More than two hundred.”

“Did you leave at any point?”

“I used the restroom. I spoke privately with several donors. I did not come to this hospital.”

Grant showed her the bracelet image.

“Do you recognize this?”

Evelyn studied it.

“Rachel’s bracelet.”

“You’re certain?”

“I saw her wearing it last Sunday.”

Claire turned.

“Where?”

“At my house.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“Why was Rachel at your house?”

Evelyn removed her gloves slowly.

“She came to ask for work.”

“What kind of work?”

“She wanted a position tutoring children in one of our foundation programs.”

Grant asked, “Did you hire her?”

“No. She was agitated and disrespectful. I asked her to leave.”

“Did she leave the bracelet?”

“Not that I saw.”

Claire watched Evelyn carefully.

The perfume reached her before Evelyn took another step.

White lilies.

The same scent Lily had described.

Evelyn leaned toward the bed.

Lily opened her eyes.

For an instant, fear crossed the child’s face.

Then she whispered, “Grandma?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Yes, darling.”

Lily looked at the silver brooch pinned to Evelyn’s coat.

A crescent moon made of diamonds.

Her breathing quickened.

Claire noticed.

“So did Grant.”

Evelyn extended her hand.

Lily pulled away.

“No more circles.”

The room went silent.

Evelyn’s smile disappeared.

“What did she say?”

Claire stepped in front of her.

“You heard her.”

“I have never given that child a magnet.”

Grant asked, “Did you tell Lily the magnets would bring her father home?”

“Of course not.”

“Did you lend anyone your perfume?”

Evelyn gave him a cold look.

“My perfume is made exclusively for me.”

Lily began crying.

“Make her go.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Mom, leave.”

Evelyn turned toward him.

“You cannot possibly believe this.”

“I believe Lily is afraid.”

“That woman has poisoned her against me.”

Claire felt the words like a slap.

Evelyn had accused her of manipulating Daniel throughout their marriage. Whenever he defended Claire, Evelyn claimed he had been controlled.

Now she was doing the same with Lily.

A police officer appeared in the doorway.

“Detective, we found something in Mrs. Bennett’s car.”

Evelyn became very still.

The officer held up an evidence bag.

Inside was a red cardboard box.

The same kind of box shown on the security footage.
