Chapter 13 - The Sister Who Drowned

Daniel stood beyond the glass, unable to speak.

Laura was thirty-four years old, but time had preserved echoes of the five-year-old girl from the photograph.

Her dark curls fell around a narrow face. A scar crossed her right temple. Rachel’s bracelet hung loosely from her wrist.

Miriam turned toward her.

“You were told to remain upstairs.”

Laura ignored her.

She looked at Lily.

The child began trembling.

Claire moved closer to the glass.

“You fed her the magnets.”

Laura’s expression softened.

“I gave her the circles.”

“You almost killed her.”

“I calculated the time.”

“The surgeons removed part of her intestine.”

“That was not supposed to happen.”

Claire struck the glass with both palms.

“She is five years old.”

Miriam stepped between Laura and Lily.

“This was your plan?”

“You would not expose them,” Laura replied. “You kept collecting children, collecting blood, making promises. Evelyn kept paying. Daniel kept living as though none of us existed.”

“I protected you.”

“You imprisoned me.”

“I saved your life.”

“You experimented on me.”

Daniel found his voice.

“Laura.”

She turned.

For a moment, anger disappeared from her face.

“You got old.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you were dead.”

“You left me.”

“I was six.”

“You told them I fell into the pool.”

“Our father told me to say that.”

“You believed him.”

“I was six.”

Laura’s mouth tightened.

Claire saw the wounded child beneath the adult rage.

But sympathy could not erase what she had done to Lily.

“Why thirty-six?” Claire asked.

Laura looked at the numbered magnets displayed on a tray.

“For every child they buried without a name. For every family they paid to remain silent.”

“You could have gone to the press.”

“I did. Reporters disappeared. Evidence vanished. Police reports were rewritten.”

Grant studied her.

“You had help inside the department.”

Laura smiled.

“I had help everywhere.”

“Who was the officer in Rachel’s video?”

“You will meet him soon.”

Miriam grabbed Laura’s arm.

“This is over. Release the child.”

Laura pulled away.

“You do not give orders anymore.”

She pressed a button on the wall.

Steel shutters dropped over the glass doors.

Alarms sounded.

Red lights began flashing.

Grant’s officers tried to force the entrance, but the treatment room sealed automatically.

Laura moved behind Lily’s table.

Claire saw a control device in her hand.

“What did you do?” Miriam demanded.

“I activated the destruction sequence.”

“You’ll erase decades of research.”

“That is the point.”

Smoke began filling the outer corridors.

The laboratory’s computers displayed countdown timers.

Ten minutes.

Laura looked at Claire.

“I never intended Lily to die.”

“You told her the magnets would bring her father home.”

“She needed to swallow them willingly.”

“You used her love for him.”

Laura’s eyes moved to Daniel.

“Our father used mine.”

“You are not punishing Charles,” Claire said. “You are becoming him.”

The words struck.

Laura looked away.

Miriam rushed toward the emergency panel.

Laura raised a gun.

“Do not.”

Lily began crying harder.

Claire forced herself to speak calmly.

“Laura, look at her.”

“I am looking.”

“No. See her. She is not Subject 19. She is not proof. She is not a message. Her name is Lily.”

Laura’s hand trembled.

Claire continued.

“She likes strawberry pancakes. She sleeps with a rabbit named Captain Blue. She is afraid of thunderstorms but pretends she is not. She draws every person with purple hair because she says purple means brave.”

Lily looked at Laura through her tears.

“I don’t want to be brave.”

Laura’s face broke.

For a second, she was no longer a planner, victim, or avenger.

She was an older sister looking at a terrified child.

The timer reached eight minutes.

Miriam lunged.

She seized the syringe and injected its contents into Lily’s intravenous line.

Claire screamed.

Daniel struck the glass.

Laura fired.

The bullet hit Miriam in the shoulder.

She fell.

Lily’s monitor began alarming.

Her heart rate accelerated.

Laura rushed to the child.

“What did you give her?”

May you like

Miriam laughed through the pain.

“The final test.”
