Chapter 6 - the night of the foundation gala

The Cross Family Foundation gala was held in the ballroom of the Grand Ashford Hotel.
Nearly four hundred guests attended.
Politicians, developers, investors, and reporters gathered beneath crystal chandeliers while Daniel spoke about responsibility, family values, and the importance of leaving a legacy.
Emily stood beside him in a red satin dress.
The color had been Vivian’s choice.
“It photographs well,” Vivian had said. “Try not to look uncomfortable.”
From the stage, Daniel thanked his mother for protecting the Cross name through difficult times.
He thanked the board.
He thanked the donors.
He did not thank Emily.
When the applause ended, Vivian approached the microphone.
“My son has carried enormous responsibilities,” she said. “A man in his position needs loyalty at home as well as in business.”
Her eyes moved toward Emily.
Several guests followed her gaze.
“Unfortunately,” Vivian continued, “not everyone understands the sacrifice required to become part of a family like ours.”
The room became quieter.
Daniel did not intervene.
Emily realized the speech had been planned.
Vivian smiled.
“Still, we believe in second chances.”
A staff member brought a folder to the stage.
Inside was the postnuptial agreement.
Vivian held out a pen.
The performance was designed to trap Emily publicly.
If she signed, she surrendered her rights.
If she refused, Vivian would portray her as disloyal in front of investors and reporters.
Daniel moved close enough to whisper.
“Sign it.”
Emily looked at him.
“Was this your idea?”
“Do not make a scene.”
“You brought legal documents onto a stage.”
“Smile and sign.”
Emily turned toward the audience.
A camera livestreamed the gala to the foundation’s website.
Somewhere behind the ballroom walls, journalists recorded every expression.
Emily accepted the pen.
Vivian’s smile widened.
Then Emily closed the folder.
“I would never sign a legal agreement without independent counsel,” she said into the microphone.
A ripple of surprise moved through the room.
Vivian’s face tightened.
“This is a simple family matter.”
“Then it should have remained private.”
Daniel reached for the folder.
Emily held it away.
“Since we are discussing loyalty,” she continued, “perhaps the foundation should publish a complete financial report showing how donor money has been used.”
Silence filled the ballroom.
Several board members looked at one another.
Vivian’s face became pale beneath her makeup.
Daniel took the microphone.
“My wife is tired.”
“I’m not tired.”
He gripped her elbow beneath the edge of the stage where the cameras could not clearly see.
Emily pulled away.
The movement was small, but enough people noticed.
Daniel forced a laugh.
“Emily has always had a dramatic sense of humor.”
“No,” she said. “I have questions.”
A reporter near the front raised her phone higher.
Daniel turned off the microphone.
“Get her out of here,” Vivian whispered.
Two security employees approached, but they hesitated. Emily had done nothing threatening.
Rosa, who had attended as part of the household staff, stood near the ballroom entrance. She watched with open concern.
Emily stepped down from the stage by herself.
As she passed the tables, she heard quiet conversations beginning.
What financial report?
Why did they want her signature?
Was something wrong with the foundation?
Vivian had intended to humiliate her.
Instead, she had created witnesses.
In the hotel corridor, Daniel caught up with Emily.
“What is wrong with you?” he demanded.
“You tried to force me to sign in front of four hundred people.”
“You damaged the foundation.”
“The foundation is already damaged.”
Daniel glanced toward the ballroom doors.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.”
“I know exactly what I did.”
“You made my mother look dishonest.”
“Is that what frightens you?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What have you found?”
Emily remained silent.
His expression changed.
“You have documents.”
“You should return to your guests.”
“Where are they?”
“You’re proving my point.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“If you take private company information to anyone, I will make sure you are charged.”
“With what?”
“Theft. Fraud. Corporate espionage.”
Emily thought of the offshore account carrying her forged signature.
“You’ve been preparing that accusation for a long time.”
Daniel froze.
The reaction lasted less than a second.
It was enough.
Emily turned and walked toward the elevator.
Daniel followed.
“You’re confused.”
“I’m not.”
“You have been under stress. People have noticed.”
“Which people?”
“My mother. The staff. Your clients.”
“You contacted my clients?”
“We are trying to help you.”
The elevator doors opened.
Emily stepped inside.
Daniel blocked them with one hand.
“Go back to the mansion,” he said. “We’ll discuss this privately.”
“I’m staying at a hotel.”
“No.”
The word came automatically.
He expected obedience.
Emily pressed the button for the lobby.
Daniel entered the elevator with her.
“You are my wife.”
“That does not make me your property.”
“You will not embarrass me and then disappear.”
Emily looked directly at the camera in the upper corner of the elevator.
Daniel followed her gaze.
His voice dropped.
“Fine. Go wherever you want.”
The elevator opened into the lobby.
Daniel smiled as hotel guests passed them.
To anyone watching, they were still a perfect couple sharing a quiet conversation.
Emily walked outside.
A black sedan waited near the entrance.
Her mother stood beside it.
Celeste Bennett wore a simple dark suit. Her silver-blonde hair was pulled back, and her expression carried the calm authority that had once unsettled defendants in federal courtrooms.
Daniel stopped several feet away.
He clearly did not recognize her.
Celeste looked at Emily’s arm where Daniel had gripped it.
“Are you ready to come home?” she asked.
Emily wanted to say yes.
Instead, she thought of the account in her name, the missing millions, and the staff members who remained dependent on the Cross family.
“Not yet.”
Celeste looked toward Daniel.
“Then I’ll be close.”
Daniel approached.
“Emily, who is this?”
Celeste extended her hand.
“Someone you should have researched more carefully.”
Daniel stared at her but did not accept the handshake.
Emily entered the car.
May you like
As they drove away, she looked through the rear window.
Daniel was already calling Vivian.
