Chapter 10 - the last saved video

One year after the night in the mansion, Emily stood inside a renovated brick building on the edge of the city.
Sunlight filled the open rooms.
Workers installed computers in a training area while volunteers arranged chairs in the meeting hall.
A simple sign near the entrance read:
THE HART CENTER FOR FINANCIAL SAFETY
The center offered free legal guidance, emergency financial planning, and digital security services to people leaving controlling relationships.
Emily had used part of her untouched trust fund to establish it.
Celeste provided legal support through her foundation. Meridian Shield created secure devices that allowed users to preserve documents, recordings, and financial records without alerting anyone monitoring their phones.
Rosa managed the building.
After thirty years of serving the Cross family, she now supervised a staff that listened when she spoke.
“You have a visitor,” Rosa told Emily.
Adrian entered carrying two cups of coffee.
“You still forget to eat when you’re working,” he said.
“I had breakfast.”
“A blueberry does not count as breakfast.”
“It was a large blueberry.”
He handed her a cup.
They walked toward the main office.
On the wall hung a framed photograph from Emily’s university graduation. The same picture Vivian had found facedown in Emily’s office.
This time, Adrian and Celeste’s names appeared beneath it.
Not because Emily needed their status.
Because she no longer felt the need to hide where she came from.
Adrian looked around the building.
“Your mother thinks we need additional security near the rear entrance.”
“Of course she does.”
“She also wants an office here.”
“She already has three offices.”
“She says none of them are close enough to make sure you take lunch breaks.”
Emily smiled.
The past year had not erased everything.
She still woke some nights expecting to hear Daniel’s footsteps outside the bedroom. She still felt tense when someone stood too close behind her. The smell of cleaning spray could bring her back to the mansion before she had time to stop it.
Healing had not arrived as a single dramatic moment.
It came through ordinary choices.
Choosing her own clothes.
Choosing when to answer the phone.
Choosing a home with sunlight, mismatched furniture, and no rooms designed to impress strangers.
Her new house was small compared with the Cross mansion.
It belonged entirely to her.
“Have you decided what to do with the final recording?” Adrian asked.
Emily knew which one he meant.
The Meridian Shield server still held every file captured inside the mansion.
Most had been transferred to prosecutors or sealed as evidence.
One remained in Emily’s personal archive.
The video began after the investigators entered the house.
It showed Emily carrying her bag down the staircase.
Daniel waited beneath the chandelier.
Vivian stood near the front doors while officers examined the living room.

The camera captured Emily leaving the mansion without looking back.
For months, she had kept the video because
