Chapter 9 - The Trap in the Living Room
Detective Morales wanted Rebecca to believe the evidence was weaker than it was.
He asked Emily’s parents to return home after their release from the hospital. A medical team remained nearby, and officers waited in an unmarked van down the street.
Emily called Rebecca.
“My parents want to resolve the trust privately,” she said. “They don’t want a scandal.”
Rebecca arrived forty minutes later.
She carried the leather folder.
Daniel waited in the kitchen. Emily stood beside the television. Her parents sat together on the sofa.
Rebecca began gently.
“I know everyone is frightened. But the trust was created for your protection.”
Robert Carter looked at her.
“Show me what I signed.”
Rebecca opened the folder and placed the pages on the coffee table.
Robert examined them.
“This isn’t my writing.”
“You were tired that day.”
“I have never signed Robert Carter without my middle initial.”
Rebecca turned to Margaret.
“You remember signing.”
Margaret’s voice shook.
“I remember trusting you.”
Rebecca’s expression hardened for the first time.
“Trust requires cooperation.”
Emily stepped toward the television.
“So does fraud.”
She displayed the recovered doorbell recordings.
Rebecca watched herself enter the house twice.
She listened to her own voice describe the transfer.
When Detective Morales entered, Rebecca attempted to leave.
She was arrested on suspicion of fraud, forgery, financial exploitation, unlawful entry, and causing a medical emergency.
The investigation later uncovered twelve other elderly clients whose property had been transferred into trusts controlled by Rebecca.
Some had lost savings.
Two had lost homes.
All of them had been told that no one would believe them.

It had recorded the one person Rebecca believed could never speak.
