Chapter 7 - The Debt Behind the Smile

Emily and Daniel met Rebecca at a quiet café near the hospital.
Detective Morales listened through a recording device concealed inside Emily’s bag.
Rebecca arrived wearing a navy dress and carrying her leather folder.
She embraced Daniel.
Then she turned to Emily.
“This must be unbearable for you.”
Emily forced herself to remain calm.
“My mother said you brought trust documents.”
Rebecca nodded. “Your parents asked me to establish an estate plan.”
“My father said not to sign.”
“He was confused.”
“Why did you file the property transfer while they were being taken to the hospital?”
Rebecca’s expression did not change.
“Because the documents had already been executed. Delaying the filing would have been irresponsible.”
Daniel placed both hands on the table.
“You told me the trust was private investment capital.”
“It is.”
“You never told me it was connected to our parents’ house.”
Rebecca looked at him with disappointment.
“Daniel, your loan is separate.”
“Is it?”
Rebecca leaned closer.
“You owe a significant amount of money. Your parents knew. They wanted to protect you.”
Daniel’s face turned red.
“They didn’t know.”
“Then perhaps you should be grateful I kept your secret.”
Emily understood the trap.
Rebecca had used Daniel’s shame to keep him silent. She had made him feel dependent, then used his debt as leverage.
“What happens if Daniel cannot repay you?” Emily asked.
Rebecca smiled faintly.
“The trust collects its assets.”
“Including our parents’ house?”
“If the house legally belongs to the trust.”
Emily stood.
Rebecca’s eyes followed her.
“You should be careful,” Rebecca said. “Accusations can destroy families.”
Emily lifted her bag from the chair.
“No,” she replied. “Secrets destroy families. Accusations only expose them.”
Outside, Detective Morales waited in an unmarked car.
“You did well,” he said.
“Was it enough?”
“Enough to prove motive. Not enough to prove attempted harm.”

Emily looked back through the café window.
Rebecca was already speaking urgently into her phone.
