Chapter 14 - The Child After Claire

Subject Twenty-Four had never appeared in Evelyn’s records.
The survivor archive searched every intake file, birth record, and missing-child report connected to Project Lantern. One name surfaced repeatedly beneath altered identification numbers: Lucas Vale.
Malcolm Vale’s son.
Officially, Lucas died at age six in a boating accident. No body was recovered. Malcolm’s wife left the country shortly afterward and had not been seen since.
Claire remembered the third child in the old video: Adrian standing beside Conrad. But perhaps Adrian had not been the only child trained to guard the secret.
Malcolm Vale vanished again before police could question him. His abandoned car was found near the river, blood on the driver’s seat. The blood belonged to Malcolm, but the amount was not fatal.
Adrian refused to speak unless Claire visited him.
Against every recommendation, she agreed.
He sat behind reinforced glass in the federal prison hospital. His injuries from the detention attack had healed, but his left hand trembled.
“You received my note,” he said.
“Who is Subject Twenty-Four?”
“Lucas.”
“Where is he?”
Adrian looked toward the camera in the ceiling. “Listening.”
“Is Conrad his father?”
“No. Conrad considered blood unreliable. He chose heirs by conditioning.”
“And you failed?”
“I became attached to you.”
Claire almost laughed. “You beat me.”
“I said attached, not kind.”
The honesty was monstrous.
Adrian continued. “My father ordered me to kill you after the lighthouse transmission. I refused.”
“You expect gratitude?”
“No. I expect you to understand why I was attacked in detention.”
“Lucas?”
“He has been inside the network longer than any of us knew. Malcolm raised him under different identities. Conrad activated him when the client list was released.”
“What does he want?”
“The final verse.”
“Ruby does not know it.”
“She is writing it.”
Claire thought of Ruby waking with new sequences. The hidden audio in the family-call recording had carried more than a map. It had implanted a reconstruction algorithm, using Ruby’s mind to assemble the missing protocol.
“Can it be stopped?”
Adrian looked at her with something that resembled pity. “Only if the original recording is destroyed.”
“There are thousands of copies.”
“Exactly.”
The assault video had become evidence, news footage, survivor symbol, and viral outrage. Every copy potentially carried the hidden signal. Conrad had used the very act meant to expose abuse to distribute his work.
Claire left the prison feeling contaminated by her own victory.
At the archive office, Ruby had filled three notebooks with numbers, musical notation, and diagrams of neural pathways she had never studied. Maya wanted the notebooks burned. Elise warned that suppressing the process could damage Ruby’s memory permanently.
“We need Lucas,” Elise said by secure call. “He may carry the counter-sequence.”
“How do we find someone who has been hidden for twenty years?” Ortiz asked.
Ruby looked up from the notebook. “He already found us.”
She turned her laptop around.
A live camera showed the family office at Laurel Ridge. A young man stood inside the hidden monitoring passage. He appeared to be in his late twenties, with dark hair and a calm expression.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Hello, Claire,” he said. “I am the shadow in the closet.”
Claire remembered the frozen video frame from the night of the attack. The shape behind her. Someone had indeed been inside the house.
Lucas held up the original red file.
“Nora Bell was never the reason Adrian struck you,” he said. “He saw me behind you.”
The story changed again.
Adrian had raised the textbook while watching the closet. Had the first blow been intended to knock Claire away from Lucas? Had Adrian been protecting the archive, attacking Claire, or reacting to an intruder who controlled them both?
Lucas opened the red file. Inside was a photograph of Conrad lying on a surgical table, apparently unconscious.
“My father is preparing the transfer,” Lucas said.
“Conrad is not your father,” Claire replied.
“He is everyone’s father once memory is rewritten.”
Behind Lucas, a steel door opened. Malcolm Vale stepped into the passage with a bandage around his hand.
He looked terrified.
“Lucas,” Malcolm whispered, “she is not ready.”
Lucas smiled at Claire through the camera.
“She will be tomorrow.”
The feed ended.
At that exact moment, every public copy of the assault video changed.

For one frame, too fast for most viewers to notice, the image of Adrian raising the textbook was replaced by a red lighthouse with seventeen windows.
Around the world, people who watched began dreaming the same song.
