Chapter 10 - The Mother Who Was Never Buried

The woman in the photograph had Claire’s eyes.

She stood outside a coastal clinic beneath a sign reading Bellweather Recovery Institute. Her hair was silver at the temples, her posture straight, her expression wary. On the back of the photograph, someone had written a name.

Dr. Elise Ward.

Federal agents secured the tunnel and arrested Adrian. Conrad and Malcolm Vale escaped through a flooded maintenance shaft. Nora suffered a concussion but refused hospitalization until she saw the photograph.

“Elise Ward trained Conrad,” she said.

Claire looked at her. “My mother trained him?”

“According to center records, she developed the earliest memory-reconstruction model. Conrad took credit after she disappeared.”

Evelyn confirmed the story under federal questioning. Elise had opposed using children in Project Lantern. When she threatened to expose the research, Conrad staged her death and transferred Claire into the program.

“Why did you tell me she was dead?” Claire asked through the interview-room glass.

“Because I believed she was,” Evelyn replied. “Until two years ago.”

“You knew for two years?”

“I received a photograph and a warning. If I tried to contact her, Conrad would take you and Maya.”

“He took us anyway.”

Evelyn lowered her head.

Claire was tired of secrets disguised as protection.

Adrian’s detention hearing drew national attention. Prosecutors played the family-call recording in court. Relatives testified that the attack was unprovoked. Medical experts documented years of injuries. The judge denied bail and ordered Adrian held in a federal facility.

For the first time, Claire saw him without power.

He sat behind the defense table in prison clothing, wrists chained, no foundation board or polished attorney able to transform him into a victim. When the recording played and his own voice filled the courtroom, he stared at Claire with hatred.

She did not look away.

The satisfying moment came not when the judge ruled, but when three women from the center stood in the gallery. One had been declared dead for eleven years. Another had lost custody of her children after doctors called her memories delusions. The third held a photograph of a sister who had not survived.

Adrian saw them.

He finally understood that Claire was no longer alone.

After the hearing, the government offered him a deal: identify Conrad’s network in exchange for a reduced sentence. Adrian refused.

“He believes his father will rescue him,” Ortiz said.

“Will he?”

“Conrad rescues assets, not people.”

Claire traveled under guard to Bellweather Recovery Institute. The clinic sat above a gray sea, surrounded by wind-bent pines. Its director claimed Dr. Elise Ward had never worked there. The photograph, he said, must have been manipulated.

Ruby found otherwise.

Using public licensing records, she discovered a physician named Elise Warren had treated trauma patients at Bellweather for twelve years. Her credentials traced back to a medical school that never existed. Three days before Claire arrived, Elise Warren had resigned and emptied her apartment.

In the apartment’s fireplace, investigators found burned documents and one surviving cassette tape.

Claire played it in the clinic office.

A woman’s voice spoke through static.

“Claire, if you are hearing this, Conrad has opened the chamber again. Do not trust the archive. I divided the evidence because one complete record would give him the process he needs. The photograph will lead you to me only if you remember the lighthouse.”

Claire paused the tape.

“What lighthouse?” Ortiz asked.

Maya, who had joined by secure video, went pale.

“We drew one as children,” she said. “A red lighthouse with seventeen windows.”

Ruby searched old family storage and found a box of childhood drawings Evelyn had preserved. Most showed houses, trees, and stick figures. One showed a tall red lighthouse on a black cliff. Seventeen yellow windows spiraled upward.

At the bottom, in Claire’s childish handwriting, were coordinates.

The location lay on an island forty miles from the coast.

Before federal agents could arrange transport, news broke that Adrian had been attacked in detention. He survived with severe injuries. His cellmate claimed Adrian repeatedly whispered one sentence before the assault.

“Elise is coming for the last witness.”

That same night, the secure evidence vault containing the metal cylinder was opened without force.

The photograph of Elise vanished.

In its place lay the brass key from the hollowed textbook.
