Chapter 8 - Sarah's Second Role

Sarah was still wearing the gray jail uniform beneath a stolen coat.
Her escape had not appeared on any alert because Michael Trent had signed a transfer order moving her to a supposed federal interview. The transport van carried her directly to the station.
Lily's eyes found Laura's.
She did not cry. She lifted her right hand and pressed two fingers against her wrist, the signal Ruiz had taught her for keep talking.
Trent ordered Daniel to carry the archive computer upstairs. Daniel complied, but the machine was bolted to the desk.
Then carry the drives.
There are no drives, Daniel said. The index is only a map.
Sarah descended two steps and pointed her weapon at Laura.
She always makes things difficult, she said. Brian warned me.
Brian is in a coma because your people keep trying to kill him.
Sarah's expression flickered. Our people?
Laura recognized genuine surprise.
Trent noticed too. Do not start thinking now, Sarah. It does not suit you.
The insult changed something in her face.
Sarah had entered Laura's marriage as an operative, but she had also believed Brian loved her. She believed the house would become theirs, that Halcyon would reward them, that the cruelty in the pantry was the final unpleasant step before a new life. Trent had never intended to let either of them keep anything.
Laura spoke carefully. The nurse tried to kill Brian. The device under his bed tried again. Did Trent tell you?
Sarah looked at him.
Trent tightened his grip on Lily. Brian became unreliable.
You said he would be protected.
I said what was necessary.
Sarah's pistol lowered by an inch.
Trent shot her.
The bullet struck her upper chest and spun her against the wall. Lily screamed and dropped to the floor. Laura rushed forward as Daniel threw a metal evidence box. It struck Trent's arm. The pistol fired into the ceiling.
Ruiz emerged from the conduit behind them, seized Lily, and pulled her into the archive. Daniel tackled Trent on the stairs. The two men crashed against the rail, fighting for the weapon.
Laura knelt beside Sarah.
Blood spread across the stolen coat. Sarah's breath came in wet gasps.
He has a list, she whispered.
What list?
Children. Not wives. Children who heard things. Saw things. He moves them through clinics.
Where?
Sarah's eyes rolled toward the archive cabinets. Evelyn knew.
Above them, Daniel cried out. Trent struck him with the pistol and ran into the storage corridor. Ruiz pursued. Station alarms began ringing as the tactical team breached the outer doors.
Sarah caught Laura's sleeve.
Brian did love you once, she said. That is why Vale chose him. Love makes better leverage than hate.
Laura did not know whether the words were meant as comfort or cruelty.
Sarah died before paramedics reached the chamber.
Trent escaped through a maintenance tunnel, but Lily was safe. Daniel suffered a fractured rib and a deep cut above his eye. The archive was secured under joint federal custody, though Ruiz insisted that no single agency receive the entire index.
Thomas's hidden testimony propagated exactly as Laura intended. Every copied file contained his voice naming Trent. By sunrise, arrest warrants existed in five states.
But Trent had vanished.
The more immediate shock came from Sarah's claim. Investigators searched the archive for references to witness children. They found a cabinet marked SEVEN.
Inside were thirty-two files, each assigned a number instead of a name. The children had been placed in psychiatric facilities, foster homes, private boarding schools, or new families after witnessing Halcyon crimes. Records had been altered so thoroughly that several no longer legally existed.
File Seven contained a photograph of a girl with dark hair and serious eyes.
Laura recognized herself.
The intake date was one week after Thomas Hart's death.
The file stated that Laura had been evaluated at the Briarwood Center for acute grief, given memory-suppressing medication, and questioned repeatedly about her father's work. Evelyn had told Laura she spent that week with an aunt.
Laura remembered almost nothing.
A handwritten note at the bottom read:
Subject retains visual memory of lower room. Transfer aborted after maternal interference. Monitor through marriage candidate B.B.
Brian had not met Laura by chance.
Their relationship had been arranged years before their first date.
Ruiz read the note in silence.
Laura looked through the glass wall of the interview room, where Lily colored beside a federal advocate.
How long have they been watching my family?
Daniel answered from the doorway, one arm bound against his ribs.
Since before you were born.
He placed another file on the table.
May you like
It belonged to Evelyn Hart.
Her subject number was One.
