Chapter 12 - The House Without Windows

Lily denied ever seeing a windowless house.
Ruiz questioned her gently, using photographs and drawings rather than direct pressure. Lily remembered Dr. Shaw taking her to a special counseling building twice. She wore headphones in the car and was told not to look outside because the game depended on surprise.
Inside, every room had painted windows but no real glass. A woman behind a white door sang the same lullaby Evelyn once sang to Laura.
Lily hummed the melody.
Margaret recognized it.
The house without windows was an underground emergency shelter built beneath the original St. Agnes Children's Trust estate. The mansion above burned in 1986. Public records claimed the shelter had been filled with concrete, but Samuel told Margaret that Halcyon continued using it as a secure archive and detention center.
The property now belonged to a private cemetery foundation outside city limits.
Ruiz obtained a warrant under seal, bypassing Trent's former office. Federal vehicles approached from three roads before dawn. Laura remained in the command van until an agent found a child's pink hair clip beside a concealed entrance.
It belonged to Lily.
The shelter descended through three levels. The first contained empty dormitories painted with cheerful murals. The second held interview rooms, audio equipment, and shelves of children's drawings. Many showed circles divided by lines.
The third level was flooded ankle-deep with cold water.
At its center stood a white door.
Behind it, they found Anna Mercer.
She was strapped to a medical chair, silver hair falling to her shoulders, eyes open but unfocused. Samuel Bennett stood beside her holding a pistol. He was seventy-three, tall despite a stoop, with the same controlled expression Brian used when pretending patience.
Daniel stepped into the room before Ruiz could stop him.
Father.
Samuel looked at him without warmth. You were always the sentimental one.
You killed Thomas.
I cut the brake line. Trent changed the report. Vale ordered both.
The confession arrived so easily that Laura distrusted it.
Why admit it now?
Because none of you are leaving with the archive.
Samuel had wired the lower shelter with explosives. A pressure switch beneath Anna's chair would activate if she stood. A dead-man trigger rested in his hand.
He demanded the joined key.
Daniel placed his half on the wet floor. Laura did the same. Samuel ordered her to push them forward.
Anna turned her head at the sound of metal scraping concrete.
Her eyes focused on Laura.
For a moment, decades disappeared from her face.
Little star, she whispered.
The words struck Laura like a bell. Evelyn had called her that only once, after Thomas's funeral, then cried as if she had said something forbidden.
Laura knelt slowly.
Anna, do you know me?
Samuel raised the pistol. Do not speak to her.
Anna began humming Lily's melody.
Laura remembered the painted window, her palms against glass, a woman's mouth forming silent words. Not a rhyme. A promise.
No room can hold the sky.
Anna's humming stopped.
She completed the phrase.
No name can own a child.
The white door locked automatically. A mechanism beneath the flooded floor activated. Vault 2 was opening somewhere inside the shelter.
Samuel's calm finally broke.
He fired at Laura.
Daniel moved between them. The bullet entered his shoulder. Ruiz fired once, striking Samuel's wrist. The dead-man trigger fell into the water.
Everyone froze.
The trigger light remained green.
Samuel laughed. It was never connected.
Then an explosion shook the upper level.
The real detonator had been remote.
Gideon Vale was watching.
Concrete dust poured from the ceiling. Agents cut Anna's restraints while Ruiz secured Samuel. Daniel remained conscious, pressing one hand against his wound. Laura and a medic lifted Anna from the chair despite the pressure switch.
Nothing happened.
Another false threat.
They moved through the flooded corridor as sections of the shelter collapsed behind them. On the second level, fire blocked the main stairwell. Lily's old drawing files scattered in the heat. Laura noticed one mural of a blue window with seven yellow stars. Beneath it, a maintenance hatch stood open.
The hatch led to a ventilation tunnel and finally to the cemetery grounds.
They emerged at sunrise as smoke rose from hidden vents between gravestones.
Anna was taken to a secured hospital. Daniel entered surgery. Samuel was transported in an armored vehicle under federal guard.
For the first time, Laura believed the central machinery of Halcyon might truly be breaking.
Then Ruiz received a call.
The armored vehicle had arrived at the federal facility empty.
Both guards were unconscious.
Samuel was gone.

On the rear seat lay Michael Trent's severed courthouse badge and a note.
