Chapter 5 - The Sheriff Without a Town
In darkness, ordinary people hesitate.
Ethan did not.
He heard Cole moving toward the main doors, boots scraping wood, breath sharp. Ethan vaulted the pew, intercepted him by sound, trapped the gun wrist, and drove Cole into a column hard enough to knock off his hat.
The pistol clattered away.
One of the deputies shouted.
Daniel switched on a red-filter flashlight.
"Nobody shoot!"
Cole clawed at Ethan's face. Ethan pinned him to the floor with a forearm across his shoulder blades.
"Get off me!"
"Stop moving."
"You're assaulting a sheriff!"
Pike, still on the floor behind the baptismal font, wheezed, "He shot me."
That ended the debate.
Deputy Lena Ortiz, a former Army MP, stepped forward and put Cole in handcuffs.
Cole stared at her in disbelief.
"You work for me."
"Not tonight."
When emergency lights flickered on, Cole began talking faster.
"This is a setup. Hayes came here to meet a dead intelligence operative. Pike drew on me. Rachel's been stealing money. Daniel Cross is wanted by federal authorities. You don't know what you've stepped into."
Ortiz looked at Ethan.
"Is any of that true?"
"Some of it," Ethan said.
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
Ethan continued, "Which is why we do this carefully. Call state investigators. Not county dispatch. Use a landline outside our normal system."
Cole laughed from the floor.
"State police? You think this stops with me?"
Daniel crouched beside him.
"No, Travis. We know it doesn't."
Cole's smile vanished.
The next two hours dismantled the illusion that Sheriff Travis Cole controlled Red Creek.
Montana Division of Criminal Investigation agents arrived from Helena under emergency authorization. State troopers secured the sheriff's office. Deputy Pike was taken to the hospital with bruised ribs and a fractured sternum but no penetration. June Miller delivered a copy of the diner's hidden camera footage showing Cole's assault, his apparent coordination with Rachel, and his threat ordering Ethan out of town.
Then the first problem emerged.
Cole's holding cell was empty.
No broken lock.
No damaged camera.
No sign of force.
The state investigator in charge, Special Agent Marisol Vega, stared at the cell log.
"Who transferred him?"
Ortiz looked sick. "Nobody."
"Someone opened that door."
"Only three people have override access. Me, Sheriff Cole, and County Judge Warren Bell."
Daniel and Ethan exchanged a look.
Judge Bell owned one of the shell companies in the stolen veterans' money trail.
Vega noticed.
"You two know something."
Daniel said, "Bell is compromised."
"Based on what?"
"Financial records."
"Show me."
Daniel did.
Vega read in silence.
She did not ask why Daniel Cross was officially dead until fifteen minutes later.
When she did, Daniel answered, "Because the people we're investigating have access to federal systems."
Vega's expression hardened. "Which federal systems?"
"Some of them are in this room."
Nobody spoke.
Ethan stood by the window looking at Main Street. Red Creek was awake past midnight. People clustered outside the diner and courthouse. Rumors moved faster than facts.
Rachel sat alone in a conference room across the hall.
He had not spoken to her since the church.
He did not know what to do with the fact that she had once loved Cole. He did not know what to do with the more important fact that she had lied to Ethan to protect her brother and had been manipulated by the same man she once trusted.
Both things could be true.
Forgiveness did not erase betrayal.
Betrayal did not erase fear.
Vega approached him.
"We found Cole's cruiser."
"Where?"
"At the old fairgrounds. Engine running. Blood on the back seat."
"His?"
"Unknown."
"Anything else?"
She held up an evidence bag.
Inside was a silver Navy challenge coin.
Ethan recognized it instantly.
SEAL Team Two.
His unit.
His coin.
On the back, scratched by hand, was one word.
RACHEL.

The chair where his wife had been sitting was empty.
