Chapter 12 - The Grave That Was Never Empty

Daniel's official grave sat in a veterans' cemetery outside Helena.

His body had never been there.

Site Blue was somewhere else entirely: an abandoned missile communications bunker built during the Cold War, buried under federal land forty miles west of Red Creek.

Daniel had awakened there after the Yemen operation, injured, drugged, and told he had two options.

Die publicly.

Or disappear and hunt the people who had betrayed his team.

He chose disappearance.

Now he realized the choice itself may have been part of Helix.

"Shaw told me she was running a counterintelligence cell," he said as Vega's convoy moved toward the bunker. "She gave me targets. Accounts. Names. Every one led somewhere real. I thought I was dismantling the network."

Ethan rode in the front passenger seat.

"Maybe you were."

"Or maybe I was killing competitors."

No one answered.

Rachel remained at the train site with Luke and federal financial crimes agents who had finally arrived through Vega's trusted channel. Ethan did not want her near the bunker.

This time she did not argue.

Before he left, she touched his arm.

"Bring your father home."

He looked at her.

"I'll try."

She nodded, accepting the truth in the word.

At Site Blue, Cole's SUV sat outside an open steel door.

No guards.

No visible cameras.

That was worse than guards.

Ethan, Daniel, Vega, and a six-person state tactical team entered.

The bunker smelled of wet concrete and ozone.

Old military corridors opened into rooms filled with modern equipment.

Servers hummed behind glass.

A generator vibrated beneath the floor.

They found Cole in the first control room.

He was alive.

Barely.

He had been shot through the abdomen and handcuffed to a pipe.

Ethan crouched beside him.

Cole laughed weakly.

"Hero finally came."

"Where's my father?"

Cole coughed blood.

"Still making demands. Just like old times."

Ethan grabbed his collar.

Vega said, "Ethan."

He released Cole.

Cole smiled.

"You know what I hated about you? Whole town looked at you like you were something. Even before the medals. Your dad talked about you like God made one perfect son and forgot everybody else."

"Where is he?"

"Level three."

"Shaw?"

Cole's eyes flicked toward Daniel.

"Ask your dead friend. She owns him."

Daniel stepped closer. "What is Helix?"

Cole began laughing again.

"You still don't know."

He looked at Ethan.

"Neither do you."

Then he whispered, "Your father does."

Cole lost consciousness.

Medics moved in.

The team descended.

Level two held archives and surveillance files.

Level three held a single room with a metal chair.

Thomas Hayes sat in it.

His hands were free.

He looked at Ethan and smiled.

"Took you long enough."

Ethan stopped breathing.

For twelve years, he had imagined this face beneath a coffin lid he never opened.

Now it was older, scarred, alive.

"Dad."

Thomas stood with difficulty.

Ethan crossed the room and held him.

The old man shook once.

Then again.

Neither apologized for crying.

When they separated, Thomas looked at Daniel.

"Cross."

Daniel stared. "You know me?"

"Better than you know yourself, apparently."

Vega stepped forward. "Mr. Hayes, where is Eleanor Shaw?"

Thomas looked toward the ceiling.

"Gone."

"How?"

"There are tunnels."

"What does she want?"

Thomas looked at Ethan.

"Not money. Not weapons. Not even secrets."

"Then what?"

Thomas's expression filled with something Ethan had never seen in his father.

Fear.

"People who can be turned into institutions. Men like you. Men like Daniel. Judges like Bell. Sheriffs like Cole. She builds systems around human weakness. Helix isn't the network."

Daniel whispered, "Then what is it?"

Thomas answered.

May you like

"A test."

The bunker alarms began to scream.
