Chapter 1 - The House on Briar Hill

Six months earlier, Ashford Estate had felt like the safest place Elena had ever known.

The stone mansion stood on Briar Hill, surrounded by old oak trees, gardens, and acres of protected woodland. To outsiders, it represented the strength of the Ashford family. To Elena, it was simply the place where Leo had learned to walk.

Elena had married Margaret’s youngest son, Adrian, seven years earlier.

Adrian had never cared about the family’s wealth. He preferred teaching history at a small private school to working at Ashford Holdings. Margaret had once complained about his lack of ambition, but privately, she admired him for choosing a life that made him happy.

Beatrice, Adrian’s older sister, was different.

She had joined the family company immediately after university. She dressed perfectly, spoke confidently, and treated every conversation like a negotiation. She often reminded people that she had sacrificed her entire adult life for the Ashford name.

When Adrian died in a car accident, Elena’s world collapsed.

Leo had been only two.

Margaret insisted that Elena and Leo remain at the estate.

“This is your home,” she told Elena after the funeral. “Adrian would want his son raised where he grew up.”

Beatrice had smiled during that conversation, but Elena saw the coldness in her eyes.

At first, the changes were small.

Beatrice moved family photographs from the main hallway. Adrian’s portrait disappeared from the library. Elena found it wrapped in paper inside a storage room.

Then Beatrice began referring to Elena as a guest.

She questioned grocery expenses, examined Leo’s nursery bills, and complained whenever Elena invited friends to the estate.

Margaret stopped each argument before it went too far.

But when Margaret announced that she would spend several months in Switzerland recovering from heart surgery, Elena felt a knot form in her stomach.

Margaret placed Beatrice in temporary charge of several household matters.

“Only until I return,” Margaret said.

Beatrice smiled across the dinner table.

“Of course, Mother. I’ll take care of everything.”

Her eyes shifted toward Elena.

“And everyone.”
